To attend Register HERE \nEl Voto Femenino: The Remarkable Lives of Latina Suffragists Worldwide \nJoin the National Hispanic Cultural Center (NHCC) for a journey into the remarkable lives and accomplishments of Latina suffragists instrumental in women’s suffrage worldwide. In 2020 the NHCC produced a landmark exhibit\, “The Women’s Vote: Latina Suffragists Fighting for the Right to Vote/El voto femenino: sufragistas Latinas luchando por el derecho al voto\,” in celebration of 100 years of the U.S. women’s vote. It features women from 27 Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking countries who made significant sacrifices to gain the women’s vote. \nFree community event \n \nYou will learn\, for example\, about Prudencio Ayala (1885-1936) who fought for civil rights and social reforms in El Salvador. With only a second grade education she created the newspaper “Female Redemption\,” wrote several books\, and ran for the El Salvadoran presidency in 1930. Her candidacy was denied by the Supreme Court of Justice. Magdalena Portal (1901-1989)\, of Perú\, was a poet\, journalist\, feminist\, and central figure in Perú ’s political vanguard. She spent extended periods of her life imprisoned and in exile. \nThe “tour\,” hosted by the History and Literary Arts program at the NHCC\, includes archival photographs\, historical documents\, an international timeline of women’s suffrage\, and live (and lively) narration by NHCC staff.

Register HERE \nMax Baca’s music grew out of the harsh life of the borderland\, and the duality of borderland music—its keening beauty—remains a recurring theme in everything he does. Craig Harris and Baca have collaborated on this book which tells the story of Max Baca’s extraordinary career. \nFree community event \n \nBorn and raised in Albuquerque\, Baca founded the conjunto band\, Los Texmaniacs\, in 1997\, which incorporated elements from genres such as rock and roll and jazz while still honoring the roots of conjunto tejano. Combine a hefty helping of Tex Mex conjunto\, simmer with several parts Texas rock\, add a daring dash of well-cured blues\, and R&B riffs\, and you’ve cooked up the tasty TexManiacs groove. Baca is a legend on the bajo sexto\, a twelve string guitar-like instrument\, which customarily provides rhythm accompaniment for the button accordion\, thus creating the core of the conjunto sound. Baca has appeared on national television programs such as Conan O’ Brien\, David Letterman\, Jay Leno\, and Austin City Limits. He has also participated on ten Grammy winning projects including the double-platinum CD for the Rolling Stones’ Voodoo Lounge (Virgin 96). This presentation offers a description of the asylum system and the role of expert witnesses\, focusing on the specific challenges faced by women and LGBTQ persons seeking refuge in the U.S. \nFree and open to the public \n \nKimberly Gauderman is a faculty member in the University of New Mexico History Department since 1998\, served as the Director of the UNM Latin American Studies Program for three years (2005-2008)\, and is a Faculty Affiliate of the UNM School of Law. Since 2010\, she has served as an expert witness in Latin American asylum cases\, focusing on gender-based\, sexual\, and gang violence. DESCRIPTION:1 pm (MST) \nLive via Zoom. Register HERE \nIn Overhaul\, A Social History of the Albuquerque Locomotive Repair Shops\, historians Richard Flint and Shirley Cushing Flint present the largely forgotten story of Albuquerque’s locomotive repair shops\, the driving force behind the city’s economy for more than seventy years. In the course of their study they also document the thousands of skilled workers who kept the locomotives in operation\, many of whom were part of the growing Hispano and Native American middle class. \nFree community event \n \nTheir critical work kept the Atchison\, Topeka\, and Santa Fe’s steam trains running and established and maintained Albuquerque’s unique character in the region. Including a generous selection of historic photographs\, Overhaul provides a glimpse into the people\, places\, culture\, and special history found in Albuquerque’s locomotive shops during the boom of steam railroading. The Flints provide an engaging and informative account of how these shops and workers played a crucial role in the formation and development of Albuquerque\, the “Duke City.” \nPresented by Bookworks\, History and Literary Arts Program/NHCC\, and UNM Press.

This workshop is a response to the requests for workshops expressed by Latinx writers at the National Latinx Writers Gathering in October of 2020. Presenters: Néstor David Pastor\, Valerie Martínez\, and Raul A. Reyes. \nWorkshop fee: $20. \n \nPresenters:\nNéstor David Pastor is a writer\, editor\, and translator from Queens\, NY. His past experience includes Radio Ambulante\, Feet in 2 Worlds\, and the Center for Puerto Rican Studies\, in addition to community-based work with the Afro-Latino Festival of NYC\, Newtown Literary\, and the Loisaida Festival. Currently\, he works as an editorial assistant at the North American Congress on Latin America and managing editor of Intervenxions\, a digital publication of the Latinx Project at New York University. He is also the founding editor of Huellas\, a bilingual magazine of crónicas narrativas. He holds degrees in Spanish and English from Binghamton University\, as well as an MA in Spanish from Queens College. \nRaul A. Reyes is a journalist and television commentator in New York City. State Historian Rob Martinez presents a fascinating look at the history of the Inquisition in Europe\, Spain and the Americas\, with a focus on Mexico and New Mexico. Cases of heretical behavior reveal much about the social and religious practices and activities of people in the 1600s\, 1700s\, and 1800s. \nFree community Event \n \nState Historian Rob Martínez is a native New Mexican from Albuquerque. A graduate of the University of New Mexico with an M.A. in Latin American history\, with an emphasis on New Mexico history. Rob was a research assistant at theVargas Project\, learning research skills and paleography\, abilities that would serve him well as a historian.
