Each gathering in this series will focus on a different cultural aspect of the question: “Who or what is Latinidad?” Voces de Latinidad aims to feature unique voices from our community culminating in a short documentary and digital archive celebrating the rich diversity of our lived experiences. \nOn July 8\, we invite all people of Hispanic\, Latina/o/e/x\, Chicana/o/e/x\, Indigenous\, and New Mexican heritage from the communities of Barelas\, Atrisco\, the greater South Valley\, and surrounding neighborhoods to come and share how you identify culturally and how this shapes your reality and lived experiences. \nFree Community Event. Please register using the link below. \n \nSpeaker: A native of the Dominican Republic\, Loida Maritza Pérez is an independent scholar\, cultural activist and author of Geographies of Home\, a novel published in the United States and abroad. Her upcoming book\, Beyond the Pale\, won a PEN America 2019 Jean Stein Grant for Literary Oral History. DESCRIPTION:6:30 – 8:00 pm \nJoin us at the Center for a reading and reception featuring New Mexico poet Olivia Romo! Olivia Romo is a farmer\, poet\, and water rights activist from Taos. She earned her duel Bachelor’s degrees in English and Chicano/a Studies from the University of New Mexico in 2015. Olivia is also a recognized spoken word artist and storyteller. In 2011\, she was titled the New Mexico State Slam Poetry Champion. She was also nominated as a “Remarkable Woman of Taos” and “A Woman to Watch” for the 2013 community-wide celebration honoring outstanding Taoseñas. \nFree Community Event\, generously supported by AARP Albuquerque. Snacks will be included as part of the reception. This event is part of the NHCC’s Siempre Creativo program.

This workshop will guide writers on their own journey of home\, exploring the joyful\, sorrowful\, and painful histories of past and present New Mexico. We will approach the page like a canvas and reimagine our unique histories and personal stories by interpreting works of visual art. Through experimental usage of form\, this workshop will assist writers in developing their craft. \nAfter the workshop\, a community reading will be held to provide a brave space for participants to explore how the visual arts impact them in maintaining and reclaiming New Mexico as home. \nFree Community Event\, generously supported by AARP Albuquerque. DESCRIPTION:6:00 pm \nIn collaboration with the University of New Mexico College of Fine Arts\, the Center will host Texas-based artist José Villalobos as he presents his lecture “Challenging Toxic Masculinity and the Marginalization of Brown Queer Bodies.” \nThis event is part of the 2023-24 Gale Memorial Lecture Series: “Disobedient Gestures: Afro-Latinx and Queer Latinx Artist against the Grain.” \nFree Community Event. Please register below. \n \nBio:\nJosé Villalobos grew up on the US/Mexico border in El Paso\, TX. He received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Texas at San Antonio. He was awarded the Artist Lab Fellowship Grant for his work De La Misma Piel at the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center. Villalobos is a recipient of the Joan Mitchell Painters & Sculptors Grant Award and Residency and is also a recipient of the Tanne Foundation Award. DESCRIPTION:6:00 pm \nIn collaboration with the University of New Mexico College of Fine Arts\, the Center will host Nevada-based artist Justin Favela as he presents his lecture “Give It a Rest: A Latinx Artist in Repose.” The lecture is based on Favela’s recently completed durational performance Reposo: A Hispanic Artist Rests For The Entirety Of Hispanic Heritage Month. \nThis event is part of the 2023-24 Gale Memorial Lecture Series: “Disobedient Gestures: Afro-Latinx and Queer Latinx Artist against the Grain.” \nFree Community Event. Please register below. \n \nBio: Based in Las Vegas\, Nevada\, and known for large-scale installations and sculptures that manifest his interactions with American pop culture and the Latinx experience\, Justin Favela has exhibited his work both internationally and across the United States. His installations have been commissioned by museums including the Denver Art Museum in Colorado and Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Arkansas. He is the recipient of the 2018 Alan Turing LGTBIQ Award for International Artist.
