SUMMARY:Virtual Book Reading and Discussion: Jessica Helen Lopez\, The Blood Poems
DESCRIPTION:3 pm (MST) \nLive Via Zoom. Register HERE \nThe Blood Poems is one part bloodletting\, one part healing\, and one part sensuous celebration as Jessica Helen Lopez lays out what it means to be a strong brown woman\, a single mother\, and the kickass bard that the twenty-first century needs. Lopez openly faces a damaging childhood\, sex\, divorce\, and racial injustice in these poems. She proves that love is as complicated as lovemaking — messy and lusty\, raucous and powerful\, capable of amazing highs and abysmal lows. She proves that when a woman learns to love herself\, she will live a fierce and full life and teach her daughters to do the same. \nFree community event \nFor more information\, please\, contact Dr. Patricia Marie Perea by emailing her at Patricia.perea@state.nm.us \nBook: $18.95 \n \nPresented by Bookworks\, History and Literary Arts Program/NHCC and UNM Press.

SUMMARY:NHCC Book Club: The Taste of Sugar
DESCRIPTION:5:30 pm (MDT) \nLive via Zoom\nTo join\, contact Dr. Patricia Marie Perea by emailing her at Patricia.perea@state.nm.us \n“It is 1898\, and groups of starving Puerto Ricans\, los hambrientos\, roam the parched countryside and dusty towns begging for food. Under the yoke of Spanish oppression\, the Caribbean island is forced to prepare to wage war with the United States. Up in the mountainous coffee region of Utuado\, Vicente Vega and Valentina Sanchez labor to keep their small farm from the creditors. When the Spanish-American War and the great San Ciriaco Hurricane of 1899 bring devastating upheaval\, the young couple is lured\, along with thousands of other puertorriqueños\, to the sugar plantations of Hawaii—another US territory—where they are confronted by the hollowness of America’s promises of prosperity. Writing in the tradition of great Latin American storytelling\, Marisel Vera’s The Taste of Sugar is an unforgettable novel of love and endurance\, and a timeless portrait of the reasons we leave home.” – Goodreads \nFree community event

SUMMARY:Virtual Book Reading and Discussion: Stephen Graham Jones\, Memorial Ride
DESCRIPTION:6 pm (MST) \nLive Via Zoom. Register HERE \nMemorial Ride is a high-speed\, ragtag chase across the American Southwest. Cooper Town\, an American Indian soldier\, has returned from the Middle East to attend hi father’s funeral\, make some quick cash off his father’s old Harley\, and spend a whirlwind weekend with his girlfriend\, Sheri Mun. However\, when Coop runs afoul of the violent John Wayne gang\, he and Sheri Mun have no choice but to twist the throttle back on that storied chopper and make tracks. In the spirit of Billy Jean\, but fully aware of Billy Jack\, Coop and Sheri Mun’s race to survive is full speed ahead with many potholes in their path. Turning the traditional Western on its head\, Memorial Ride recasts the genre as a road movie. It’s raucous\, it’s violent\, and\, scarily enough\, it might even be true. In short\, this graphic novel delivers the storytelling prowess of Stephen Graham Jones through Maria Wolf’s artwork\, and the result is a ride you’ll want to take again and again. \nFree community event \nFor more information\, please\, contact Dr. Patricia Marie Perea by emailing her at Patricia.perea@state.nm.us \nBook: $24.95 \n \nPresented by Bookworks\, History and Literary Arts Program/NHCC and UNM Press.

SUMMARY:NHCC Book Club: The Wind That Lays Waste
DESCRIPTION:5:30 pm (MST) \nLive via Zoom\nTo join\, contact Dr. Patricia Marie Perea by emailing her at Patricia.perea@state.nm.us \n“The Wind That Lays Waste begins in the great pause before a storm. Reverend Pearson is evangelizing across the Argentinian countryside with Leni\, his teenage daughter\, when their car breaks down. This act of God or fate leads them to the workshop and home of an aging mechanic called Gringo Brauer and a young boy named Tapioca.\n \nAs a long day passes\, curiosity and intrigue transform into an unexpected intimacy between four people: one man who believes deeply in God\, morality\, and his own righteousness\, and another whose life experiences have only entrenched his moral relativism and mild apathy; a quietly earnest and idealistic mechanic’s assistant\, and a restless\, skeptical preacher’s daughter. As tensions between these characters ebb and flow\, beliefs are questioned and allegiances are tested\, until finally the growing storm breaks over the plains. \n \nSelva Almada’s exquisitely crafted debut\, with its limpid and confident prose\, is profound and poetic\, a tactile experience of the mountain\, the sun\, the squat trees\, the broken cars\, the sweat-stained shirts\, and the destroyed lives. The Wind That Lays Waste is a philosophical\, beautiful\, and powerfully distinctive novel that marks the arrival in English of an author whose talent and poise are undeniable. ” -Goodreads \nFor more information\, please\, contact Dr. Patricia Marie Perea by emailing her at Patricia.perea@state.nm.us \nFree community event

The festival combines workshops\, lectures\, panel discussions\, storytelling performances\, and musical performances connected to the oral tradition and storytelling. It was created with two essential purposes: the promotion of the oral tradition of storytelling and the establishment of a collaborative relationship among artists from New Mexico\, other parts of the United States\, Spain\, and Latin America to create new works together and contribute to the advancement of the genre. \n \nNew Mexico\, where Native American cultures\, Latin American oral tradition\, and cultural traditions such as flamenco converge\, is an ideal place for a festival focused on the oral tradition\, and Instituto Cervantes is positioned to encourage this union of cultures and promote an exchange between artists of diverse origins. Over three days\, Festival Oralidad offers academic and theoretical debate\, shares the secrets of storytellers with children\, and brings together some of the most significant musicians and storytellers in the U.S. While travel restrictions this year have limited participation to artists residing in-country\, future festivals will include colleagues from Latin America and Spain. \nAuthor\, storyteller and teacher Michelle Adam’s interactive recital is especially designed for children from six to twelve years old\, to explore the power of stories and develop their creativity and taste for storytelling. Adam’s published works include the novel Niña Duende\, set in Málaga\, Spain\, and the bilingual children’s story “Adventures with Duende in the Ocean\,” about a goblin who leads a child to the ocean. \nEmmy Tither\, an educator and researcher raised in Lima\, Peru and Washington\, DC\, is the K-12 Educational Program Coordinator for the University of New Mexico’s Latin American and Iberian Institute. She holds a BSc in Social Sciences with Anthropology from Birkbeck\, University of London and an M.A. in Documentary Arts from the University of Cape Town\, and has worked in the education\, non-profit\,and start-up sectors on four continents. \nNicolasa Chávez\, a fourteenth-generation New Mexican\, is the Deputy State Historian for the State of New Mexico and the former Curator of Latino/Hispanic/Spanish Colonial Collections at the Museum of International Folk Art. She has a master’s degree in history with a concentration in Iberian Studies from the University of New Mexico. As a dancer/artist\, she has trained in flamenco with Lili del Castillo\, Eva Encinias\, and Pablo Rodarte of Albuquerque\, and Vicente Romero and María Benítez of Santa Fe. A writer\, curator\, and historian\, she conducts lecture/demonstrations combining flamenco song and dance with the history of the art form\, as well as lectures and programs on the traditions of New Mexico\, Spain\, and the Americas. \nOrlando Romero\, a writer and historian\, received the Order of Isabella the Catholic in 2014 for “his dedication in preserving the heritage\, language\, history\, cultural traditions and Spanish customs of Hispanic New Mexico.” Born in Santa Fe\, he has written a monthly column for The New Mexican since 1998\, and is the author of Nambe Year One\, a nonfiction book exploring the history of northern New Mexico. \nCOVID PROTOCAL:\nThis concert will require either a proof of vaccination completed at least 14 days prior to the event or a negative COVID test administered by a health care professional within 72 hours of the event. Originals or photos of documents with a matching ID will be accepted. Masks are also required while inside the NHCC.

\nBorn in Montevideo\, Uruguay\, educator Matilde Machiavello was trained in English language instruction and neurolinguistic programming in Buenos Aires\, Argentina. She is also a team coach\, Brain Gym 101 facilitator\, and storyteller\, with more than 20 years of experience working with individuals and teams to enhance talent and creativity. As a storyteller\, she believes in the “magical power of stories” in shaping a new and ideal reality\, and enjoys sharing stories in both Spanish and English and combining the different strategies in which she has been trained. \nSantiago Vaquera-Vásquez is a Chicano storyteller\, academic\, and former associate professor at the University of New Mexico. He has taught classes on Mexican American border culture\, Chicano culture\, and creative writing\, in colleges in the U.S.\, Latin America\, and Europe. His books include Algún día te cuento las cosas\, Luego el silencio\, En el Lost ‘n’ Found\, and his most recent work\, Nocturno de Frontera; his stories have been published in anthologies and literary magazines in Spain\, Italy\, Mexico\, and the United States. \nGrammy-nominated singer-songwriter Perla Batalla earns critical acclaim for her distinctive voice\, emotional honesty\, and culture-merging compositions. She was born in Los Angeles to a family immersed in music. Her dad\, a Mexican mariachi and D.J.\, and her Argentine mom ran the family record shop\, Discoteca Batalla\, where Perla was exposed to an education of non-stop music that cut across genres and languages. \nAfter singing with and recording with numerous groups and artists\, including Leonard Cohen\, Perla launched her solo career with Cohen’s encouragement. Since then\, she has recorded seven albums\, been featured in film and on television\, staged two one-woman shows\, and performed in some of the world’s most prestigious venues. \nHer original Frida Kahlo musical was chosen by the Ojai Playwrights Festival and subsequently produced at the San Diego Repertory Theater to critical praise. Perla’s personal homage to her mentor\, Cohen\, continues to play to sold-out audiences throughout Europe and North America. \nPerla’s mission of exposing youth to the beauty of music and the Spanish language is ongoing in her outreach to some of the poorest communities in the U.S. She has been honored with two U.N. awards: the Earth Charter Award for extraordinary devotion to social and economic justice and he Environmental Peacebuilding Award\, for advancing social justice through music. She is also the recipient of New Mexico’s Premio Fronterizo Award for healing work in the world. \nThis concert will require either a proof of vaccination completed at least 14 days prior to the event or a negative COVID test administered by a health care professional within 72 hours of the event. Originals or photos of documents with a matching ID will be accepted. Masks are also required while inside the NHCC.
