DESCRIPTION:11 am (MST) \nThe National Hispanic Cultural Center is offering a guided tour of the Mundos de Mestizaje fresco by Frederico Vigil twice a week\, Thursdays and Fridays at 11 am. Located in the Torreón on the NHCC Campus\, Mundos de Mestizaje depicts thousands of years of Hispanic culture\, history\, and identity. \nAdmission for the tour is $2 and tickets are available for advance purchase below. Tickets can also be purchased in the New Mexico Mutual Welcome Center\, depending on availability. Capacity for each tour is limited. \n \nA Vision of History through Fresco… \nMundos de Mestizaje by Frederico Vigil is a mural housed in the Torreón on the campus of the National Hispanic Cultural Center. This monumental fresco depicts thousands of years of Hispanic history highlighting diverse cultural connections between people and places from the Iberian Peninsula to the Americas. The 4\,000 square foot painting is one of the largest frescos in North America. \nThe digitized imagery of the painting ensures that this culturally significant work can be a sharing and learning experience for students and families anywhere. Her notable works include the novels So Far from God\, The Guardians\, and Peel My Love like an Onion\, in addition to her poetry collection I Ask the Impossible. The celebrated and distinguished New Mexico escritora will be at NHCC’s Albuquerque Journal Theatre on April 7\, 2022. SUMMARY:AfroMundo Festival: Beyond the Pale Literary Event
DESCRIPTION:3:00 pm \nA literary reading and discourse with Puerto Rican and Dominican authors Mayra Santos Febres\, Eleuterio Santiago Díaz and Loida Maritza Pérez. “Beyond the pale” is a British colonial phrase for those who\, for living beyond borders and boundaries\, actual or imagined\, were considered beyond the rule of law and of accepted social norms. The phrase further suggests “otherness” and has since taken on racial connotations\, as in not white; dull\, savage\, incompetent\, dark\, backwards; heathen; diabolic\, transgressor\, hence illegal. Authors will read works and discuss the stigmas associated with those in the Caribbean who practice Afro traditions. \nFree community event \nAfroMundo Festival\nShared Roots: A Celebration of Afro-Latinx Culture \nAfroMundo was born of a desire to counter alienation and marginalization by fostering civic engagement. It was therefore founded on the principles of convite—an age-old collaborative tradition that enables community members to pool their talents and scarce resources for rituals of life\, socialization and mutual support\, whether to collectively harvest each other’s fields\, erect homes\, tend to the sick\, bury the dead\, celebrate Feast Days or organize festivals\, thus strengthening communal bonds and ensuring that no one toils\, grieves or celebrates alone. \nIn the spirit of convite which takes into account that communities are wellsprings of wisdom\, talents and skills\, AfroMundo is a diverse\, multigenerational collective of tradition bearers\, storytellers\, community historians\, artists\, cultural specialists and humanities scholars with the shared goal of nurturing community through meaningful traditional as well as contemporary cultural\, artistic\, and humanities programs designed to nourish the soul\, address inequities\, spark informed dialogues\, and establish alliances to combat racism and bias. \nThis event is free and open to the public.\nIn-person attendees are encouraged to REGISTER in advance.\nCapacity for each event is LIMITED and varies according to venue.\nFor other festival activities please go to AfroMundo.org or AfroMundo Organization on Facebook.

DESCRIPTION:7:00 pm \nAfro Caribbean Cosmology is rooted in understanding how the ashé\, the underlying power in all living things\, manifests and connects to human beings.  For souls to live in balance\, it is essential to learn how to read nature’s inherent powers.  It is by identifying with nature that one develops conscience\, as well as the iwa pele\, the “good character” that guarantees joy\, a full life\, and an ability to “see” and to understand the connection between all living things. \nFree community event\n \n“Divinations” are photosculpture installations through which José Arturo Ballester Panelli\, aka Balleste 9\, directs our gaze to Nature’s mystical connections.  Such connections are fundamental to Caribbean and Afro Latin American identities and cosmologies. \nAfroMundo Festival \nShared Roots: A Celebration of Afro-Latinx Culture \n AfroMundo was born of a desire to counter alienation and marginalization by fostering civic engagement. In Puerto Rico — and across the Caribbean and Latin America — there is a lot of denial. If you do talk about the issues\, you are accused of being over sensitive.
