DESCRIPTION:10 am to 2 pm \nEach spring\, New Mexico communities celebrate San Ysidro (aka San Isidro or Saint Isidore) the patron saint of farmers\, gardeners\, and workers. San Ysidro blesses the fields\, brings rain and discourages drought\, and assures a healthy growing season for local crops such as chile\, beans\, corn and squash. \nTraditionally observed on May 15\, join us May 13 as we celebrate San Ysidro’s Feast Day with local farmers\, activities\, food\, artists and so much more! \nParticipants include: City of Albuquerque Open Space\, Querencia Institute\, La Cosecha\, USDA/NRCS\, Rancho de las Golondrinas\, Bueno Foods\, Master Gardeners\, Antiquas del Norte Honeybee Rescue Farm\, and FoodCorps New Mexico/APS School Gardens. SUMMARY:La Canoa: New Mexicans and the Battle of Bataan
DESCRIPTION:2 pm \nJoin Margaret Garcia for a presentation and excerpts from her book Tell Me Another War Story\, chronicling the history of the New Mexico National Guard 200th Coast Artillery\, their valiant stand on Bataan in the Philippines\, and their reluctant surrender on April 9th 1942\, followed by the infamous Bataan Death March and status as POWs.  She will also talk about her father\, Evans Garcia’s experiences growing up in southern New Mexico\, in the battle and  prison camp\, and how he and his “buddies” stayed together after coming home\, serving their fellow veterans and doing all they could to keep the Bataan story alive.\nThis is a free event open to the public \n \nMargaret Garcia was born in Santa Fe\, New Mexico\, after her father came home from World War II.  Growing up\, she heard him and his veteran buddies telling their war stories as they gathered in the family kitchen\, but she never really understood the importance.  When Margaret was ten years old\, her parents divorced\, and she moved to Albuquerque and stayed close to her father over the years. \nMargaret graduated from the University of New Mexico; her father was a NMSU Aggie\, and they carried on a fun and spirited rivalry for decades.  Margaret took notes on anything she could when her father started telling war stories at dinner or at veteran events.  She promised him she would write his story\, fulfilling his request that she do everything she could so people would remember Bataan.  Tell Me Another War Story was published in April\, 2016. \nThe La Canoa Legacy Series features talks by Hispanic/Latino academic and community researchers with long-standing and distinguished records of research and teaching about New Mexico and the region. Like la canoa—referring in New Mexican Spanish to several utilitarian objects used to receive and transport people and resources and thus provide a service to the community—these talks are meant to serve the community by presenting new or overlooked information about our region to interested audiences. We want them to transport us to new understandings of our region and its rich cultural and historical inheritance\, and to move the conversation back and forth in rich dialogue between presenters and audience members.

SUMMARY:La Canoa: Narrating the Manito Trail in Wyoming and Arizona
DESCRIPTION:2 pm \nJoin Vanessa Fonseca\, Assistant Professor\, English – Arizona State University; Levi Romero\, Assistant Professor\, Chicana and Chicano Studies – University of New Mexico; and Trisha Martínez\, Ph.D. Student\, American Studies – University of New Mexico\, as they discuss the Manito Trail. \nThis is an interdisciplinary ethnographic project documenting Hispanic New Mexican\, or Manito\, migration from New Mexico to different parts of the United States from the 1850’s to the present. Looking at the many major migration routes of Manito families\, this project focuses on the driving factors for Manito migration and the exploration of querencia\, or how one establishes a sense of self and community through place. For this talk\, we will speak about our experiences along the Manito Trail in both Wyoming and Arizona and offer some historical and community perspectives gained from our work with Manito communities who left New Mexico in search of employment and opportunity.\nFree community event

Tristiana\, Marcantoni’s first Spanish-language novel\, explores a beautiful and troubled land where a group of men and women debate between the playful comfort of the world of ideas and the cruel reality of political violence. DESCRIPTION:2 pm to 4 pm \nJoin Pablo Brescia as he reads from his book La derrota de lo real/The Defeat of the Real (Miami and Mexico\, 2017) and Santiago Vaquera-Vásquez as he reads from his book En el Lost y Found (2016). \nPablo Brescia makes us see that what is created by literature can be\, at the same time\, fictional and present within us. Some stories deconstruct reality\, others assemble worlds playing with detective fiction or science fiction; some are ironic\, others satiric; some refer back to Wilcock and Bolaño\, others to Borges. In these stories\, Brescia’s narrative pulse proves to be necessary by helping us capture reality’s insane ways. \nSantiago Vaquera-Vásquez is an unrepentant border crosser\, ex-dj\, Xicano writer\, painter\, and academic. An Associate Professor of Creative Writing and Hispanic Southwest Literatures and Cultures in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at the University of New Mexico\, he is recently back in New Mexico after a year as a Fulbright Senior Lecturer in Ankara\, Turkey. He has also taught and lectured at universities across the United States\, Latin America\, and Europe. A member of the research group UC-Mexicanistas. \n \nPablo Brescia was born in Buenos Aires and has lived in the United States since 1986. He has published three books of short stories: La derrota de lo real/The Defeat of the Real (Miami and Mexico\, 2017)\, Fuera de Lugar/Out of Place (Peru\, 2012/Mexico\, 2013) and La apariencia de las cosas/The Appearance of Things (México\, 1997)\, and a book of hybrid texts No hay tiempo para la poesía/NoTime for Poetry (Buenos Aires\, 2011)\, with the pen name Harry Bimer. Some of his stories are collected in ESC (Miami\, 2013) and Gente ordinaria/Ordinary People (Mexico\, 2014). His blog is Preferiría (no) hacerlo/I Would Prefer (Not) To (http://pablobrescia.blogspot.com). He teaches Latin American Literature at the University of South Florida. \nSantiago Vaquera-Vásquez is the author of four collections of short stories\, Algún día te cuento las cosas que he visto (2012)\, Luego el silencio (2014)\, One Day I’ll Tell You the Things I’ve Seen (2015)\, and En el Lost y Found (2016). His most recent work is a co-edited anthology of scholarly writing\, The Latino/a Midwest Reader. Widely published in Spanish\, his literary work has appeared in anthologies and literary journals in Spain\, Italy\, Latin America and the United States. He has discussed his work with Eduardo Halfón and Daniel Alarcón in The Believer\, and with Edmundo Paz Soldán and Santiago Roncagliolo in The Arizona Journal of Hispanic Cultural Studies. His stories bear witness to the lives of Latinas/os who travel from California to Mexico City\, from Madrid to Istanbul. The stories are populated by wanderers building a home out of movement and living through the cultural consequences of migration. SUMMARY:La Canoa: Legacy Talks: The Myth of Tri-Cultural Harmony: Ethnic/Sexual Personas in the Tri-Cultural Land of Enchantment
DESCRIPTION:3:30 pm \nJoin us for an examination of New Mexico’s public ideology of tri-culturalism\, which holds that the state consists of three separate ethnic groups living together in harmony. \nChris Wilson\, Professor of Cultural Landscape Studies at the University of New Mexico School of Architecture and Planning will discuss the myth\, developed in the 1880s as part of the campaign to make New Mexico a state\, and crystalized in the early 20th century with the rise of mass tourism. The primary visual expression of this rhetoric—found in both public art and tourism promotional literature—is a set of ethnic personas. Occupying the middle ground between racial stereotypes and mythic archetypes\, these popular cultural types—like the iconography of the saints before them—are recognizable through attributes of costume\, arts and crafts\, skin color and facial type\, tools and modes of transportation. When linked to assumptions about technological progress\, occupational status and\, above all\, gender roles\, these images also encapsulate and endorse a particular vision of social hierarchy.\nThis is a free public event

SUMMARY:La Canoa Legacy Talks:  Genízaro Ethnogenesis\, Emergence\, and Futurism
DESCRIPTION:2 pm – 4 pm\nIn collaboration with UNM Center for Regional Studies \nJoin Associate Professor Moises Gonzales\, from the University of New Mexico’s School of Architecture and Planning\, as he relates the emerging story of the history\, identity\, and cultural evolution of the genízaro people of New Mexico during the March La Canoa Legacy Talk. \nAs defined by Fray Angelico Chavez\, genízaro was the designation given to North American Indians of mixed tribal derivation living among the Hispanic population in Spanish fashion: that is\, having Spanish surnames from their masters and Christian names through baptism\, speaking a simple form of Spanish\, and living together or sprinkled among the Hispanic towns and ranchos. Today the permanence of genízaro identity blurs the lines of distinction between Native and Hispanic frameworks of race and cultural affiliation. The talk will discuss the emergence of contemporary indigenous cultural production and futurism generated by genízaros in New Mexico\, as well as the collective work of New Mexican genízaro scholars compiled in a forthcoming anthology co-edited by Gonzales. \n \nMoises Gonzales is Associate Professor of Urban Design in Community and Regional Planning at the School of Architecture and Planning at the University of New Mexico. He is a genízaro heir of both the Cañón de Carnué Land Grant and the San Antonio de Las Huertas land grant. Gonzales also currently serves on the Board of Trustees of the Carnué Land Grant\, and has written various academic articles on the history and culture of genízaro settlements in New Mexico. He is a danzante in the Matachín and Comanche traditions of the Sandia mountain communities\, and co-editor\, with Dr. Enrique Lamadrid\, of Genízaro Nation: Ethnogenesis\, Place\, and Identity in New Mexico\, to be released by UNM Press in 2018.\nFree public event \nPresented in collaboration with Center for Regional Studies: http://crsinfo.unm.edu/.

DESCRIPTION:March—10:30 am\n\n\nFiesta—12 noon-4 pm \nJoin us in honoring the life and legacy of César Chávez at the 25th annual César Chávez Day Fiesta\, with a march—La Marcha de Justicia—beginning at 10:30 am at the National Hispanic Cultural Center and ending at noon on the Center’s Plaza Mayor. Following the march\, the family fiesta at the Center includes poetry\, dancing\, community exhibits\, children’s activities and games\, food\, and live music.\nFree public event \n\n\n \nWe are proud to welcome Dolores Huerta to deliver our keynote speech and actor/composer/musician/activist Danny Valdez to perform. Additionally\, the 2018 César Chávez and Dolores Huerta ¡Sí Se Puede! awards will be presented to people who have served the community in the spirit of the United Farm Workers leaders. \nDolores Huerta\, a native of Dawson\, NM\, was co-founder\, with César Chávez\, of the United Farm Workers Union. In 2012\, Huerta was recognized for her decades of ceaseless civil rights and labor organizing when Barack Obama granted her the Presidential Medal of Freedom Award\, the greatest civilian honor in the United States. \nDanny Valdez joined the UFW in his early years\, and later became a founding member of El Teatro Campesino\, helping to produce theatre and compose music that brought the message of the UFW to the farmworker. Valdez is an accomplished actor\, musician\, and composer; he may be best known for his roles in such classic movies as Zoot Suit and La Bamba. \nDuring the week leading up to this wonderful event\, a collaboration of student and community organizations will hold Farmworkers Awareness Week\, a three-day event honoring the legacy of the farmworker community through interactive activities\, information booths\, art displays\, and farmworker presentations. This special event will be held at the University of New Mexico Student Union Building-Atrium\, April 2 through April 4 from 11 am to 3:30 pm.

DESCRIPTION:7 pm at the Kimo Theatre\nFollowed by exhibition closing reception at 516 ARTS \nINFO: 516arts.org\, 242-1445\nTICKETS: $12 / $8 Friends of 516 ARTS\, available at kimotickets.com \n516 ARTS\, in partnership with the National Hispanic Cultural Center\, welcomes acclaimed journalists Maria Hinojosa (NPR’s Latino USA) and Simon Romero (Latin American Desk\, The New York Times)\, two of the most influential journalists exploring issues of immigration along the US-Mexico border. \nThis keynote talk is the final event for the two-part exhibition The US-Mexico Border: Place\, Imagination\, and Possibility\, on view at 516 ARTS through April 14 and at the Albuquerque Museum through April 15. The exhibition originated at the Craft & Folk Art Museum in Los Angeles\, where it was part of the Getty’s Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA initiative.
