SUMMARY:La Canoa: The Meaning of Place—Stories of Resilience
DESCRIPTION:2 pm \nPlease join Theodore Jojola\, University of New Mexico Distinguished Professor and Regents’ Professor in the Community and Regional Planning Program\, School of Architecture and Planning\, as he presents a talk on community\, identity\, and resilience. Since time immemorial\, people have attached their identities to the places that they have settled. Community embodies the intersection of people and the natural resources that sustain them. That relationship is expressed by their worldview.  A worldview describes the social and spiritual attachment to place. I will draw from these relationships to show examples of how communities have met these challenges. In addition to highlighting NM Indigenous communities that have persevered in time and space\, we will examine contemporary examples of such place-making as exemplified in the histories of the Albuquerque Indian School and the Bataan Death March. \nTheodore (Ted) Jojola\, PhD\, is a Distinguished Professor and Regents’ Professor in the Community and Regional Planning Program\, School of Architecture and Planning\, University of New Mexico (UNM). He is the founder and Director of the Indigenous Design + Planning Institute.  iD+Pi works with tribal communities throughout the Southwest region as well as internationally by facilitating culturally informed approaches to community development. He is actively involved in major research projects on Indian education\, Indigenous community development and architecture. He is co-editor of two books—The Native American Philosophy of V.F. Cordova entitled How It Is (U. of Arizona Press\, 2007) and Reclaiming Indigenous Planning (McGill-Queens University Press\, 2013).  A third book is in the works\, Contemporary Indigenous Architecture: Local Traditions\, Global Winds (working title\, UNM Press).  He is an enrolled member of the Pueblo of Isleta.

DESCRIPTION:7 pm \nCentral Features and the NHCC are proud to welcome Julio César Morales to Albuquerque as part of the 2018 Visiting Curator Series! \nABOUT JULIO CESAR MORALES\nEmploying a range of media and visual strategies\, artist and curator Julio César Morales explores issues of migration\, underground economies\, and labor on personal and global scales. He is currently curator of visual arts at Arizona State University Art Museum; was the founder and director for Queens Nails Annex\, an artist-run project space in San Francisco from 2003 to 2012; adjunct professor at The San Francisco Art Institute from 2000 to 2012; and associate professor in Curatorial Studies at The California College for the Arts from 1999 to 2010. He is currently curator at Arizona State University Art Museum/Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts\, Tempe\, AZ. \nMorales is an advisor and writer for The San Francisco Quarterly Art Magazine; from 2008 to 2012 he was adjunct curator for visual arts at Yerba Buena Center for The Arts in San Francisco; and was a contributing curator for the Japanese pavilion at the 2013 Venice Biennale. \nHe has curated more than 100+ exhibitions to date. Highlights as a curator include solo exhibitions with Superflex\, Suzanne Lacy\, Mary Kelly\, Nina Beier\, Pedro Reyes\, Miguel Calderon\, Yoshua Okon\, Koki Tanaka\, Pablo Helguera and retrospective exhibitions of George Kuchar and Miguel Angel Rios with group exhibitions including Bay Area Now Triennale and The Jumex Collection. Morales has received grants for curatorial projects from The Rockefeller Foundation\, National Endowment for The Arts\, Jumex Foundation\, and the Diane and Bruce Halle Foundation amoungst others. Morales’ artwork has been shown nationally and internationally. \nMorales’s visit is organized in partnership with ICI\, with financial support provided by The Fulcrum Fund and The FUNd at the Albuquerque Community Foundation. \nABOUT VCS\nThe inaugural 2018 Visiting Curator Series brings to Albuquerque a select group of curators working in the American Southwest region who will conduct studio visits with multiple local artists\, as well as offer mentorship opportunities. As part of the Visiting Curator Series\, each curator will give a public talk about their practice\, including the artists and the sociopolitical contexts that shape their work. \nVCS is organized by Central Features Contemporary Art and curator Nancy Zastudil in partnership with Independent Curators International (ICI). Funded in part by Common Field\, Fulcrum Fund\, and the FUNd at the Albuquerque Community Foundation.

In Oakland\, he worked in the BPP National Headquarters for six years as an assistant to Elaine Brown and Huey P. Newton. For 25 years\, he worked for gang-involved and homeless youth. In 2006\, he ran for the U.S. Senate as a Green Party candidate. He has traveled to Palestine with the African Heritage Delegation. Aaron Dixon is the author of My People are Rising (2012). He travels throughout the country speaking at college campuses and community centers. Aaron is working on his next book.

DESCRIPTION:6: 30 pm \nPRESENTER: Daybert Linares Díaz \nSYNOPSIS: In 1999\, the release of a documentary “Buena Vista Social Club\,” which depicted the process of recording the album of the same title two years prior\, became a worldwide phenomenon. After decades of partial musical obscurity due to the U.S. embargo on the island\, the international audience was once again regaled with the sounds of a pre-1959\, pre-communist Cuba. For many U.S. people\, Buena Vista Social Club signified a return to those times\, a memory of a “lost” island and rhythms—both also lost in time. \nBuena Vista Social Club’s international success and critical acclaim\, however\, bypassed entire generations of Cuban music. Indeed\, the album focused mainly on rhythms that had been produced between the 1930s and 50s. But what happened between 1959\, the year Fidel Castro took power\, and the advent of the second millennium? What music were Cuban musicians producing during this time? What new rhythms were developed? How did the music of Cuba evolve during all these years? And more importantly\, was Buena Vista Social Club an accurate representation of the contemporary music in Cuba at the time that it was released? This presentation is an invitation to explore these questions\, to listen to music\, and to learn what Cuba has produced\, musically speaking\, beyond Buena Vista Social Club.

SUMMARY:La Canoa: Mulattos of Cochiti: Caste in Spanish New Mexico
DESCRIPTION:2 pm \nPlease join Deputy State Historian Rob Martinez\, as he examines the role of racial mixing\, identity\, and the categorizing of humans living in Spanish Colonial New Mexico. The approach will be through the lens of the casta\, or caste system. Historical research\, genealogy\, and DNA all converge to provide a clearer understanding of Hispano roots in New Mexico\, as well as in Latino-Meso America and Hispanic Europe. \nDeputy State Historian Rob Martinez is a native New Mexican born and raised in Albuquerque. A graduate of the University of New Mexico with a B.B.A. in International Business Management\, Rob went on to pursue his interest in New Mexican culture and history at UNM\, earning an M.A. in Latin American history\, with an emphasis on church\, cultural\, and social practices of the Spanish Colonial period in New Mexico. Mr. Martinez worked for fourteen years as a research historian for the Sephardic Legacy Project\, scouring civil and church archives in New Mexico\, Mexico\, Spain\, France\, Italy\, Cuba\, and Puerto Rico\, analyzing documents for a research and publishing project about the Crypto-Jewish phenomenon in New Mexico and the Caribbean. Rob has presented papers and lectures on his research at the University of New Mexico as well as history conferences throughout the southwestern United States. He has also spoken to historical groups in New Mexico such as the Hispanic Genealogical Research Center of New Mexico\, the Albuquerque Historical Society\, and the Society for Crypto-Judaic Studies about research methodology\, unique findings\, New Mexico Hispanic culture\, and general History of New Mexico. Mr. Martinez is also a folk musician\, performing and promoting New Mexican Hispanic musical traditions for the past twenty years with his brother Lorenzo and their father Roberto Martinez in the group Los Reyes de Albuquerque. With his musical family\, he has performed in all parts of New Mexico\, and on multiple occasions has presented music and New Mexican culture at the Smithsonian Folk Life Festival in Washington\, D.C.\, the NEA’s National Heritage Fellowship Awards\, and also at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.

DESCRIPTION:6 pm \nThis talk is part of the educational programming related to People Powered: New Mexicans and Social Movements. \nMartinez will read from her novel\, Mother Tongue\, and talk about the 1988 conspiracy in connection with allegedly transporting two Salvadoran refugees into the United States. That historical moment speaks to conditions\, today\, in the struggle to stand with our immigrant brothers and sisters. Demetria Martinez has written poetry\, essays\, and novels. She co-authored a book on immigration reform with former Oklahoma Senator\, Fred Harris. She was honored with an international Latino book award and an American Book Award. In 2011\, she received the Luis Leal Award for Distinction in Chicana/Latino Literature.

SUMMARY:La Canoa: The Women of Local 890 and the Empire Mine Strike
DESCRIPTION:2 pm \nPlease join Professor Kells as she examines “embodied rhetoric” in the Local 890 chapter of the International Union of Mine\, Mill\, and Smelter Workers of Hanover\, New Mexico\, who staged one of the nation’s most effective groundbreaking strikes near Silver City from October 1950 to January 1952. The grievances of the Empire Zinc workers included racial discrimination in job duties and pay\, toxic work environments\, and inequitable power sharing between labor and management. The dramatic showdown\, resulting in incarceration of forty-five women\, seventeen children\, and a six-month-old baby\, shocked the nation. \nMichelle Hall Kells is Associate Professor in the Department of English at the University of New Mexico where she teaches graduate and undergraduate classes in Rhetoric and Writing. Kells received the Lyndon B. Johnson Presidential Library Research Fellowship in 2008. Her recent book is Vicente Ximenes\, LBJ’s “Great Society\,”and Mexican American Civil Rights Rhetoric (Southern Illinois University Press\, 2018). Kells is also lead editor of Latino/a Discourses: On Language\, Identity\, and Literacy Education (Heinemann\, 2004). \nThis event is part of the La Canoa lecture series\, presented in partnership with the UNM Center for Regional Studies.

In addition\, Michelle is coordinating a series of walks along the Rio Grande Bosque\, “Walking with Poets\,” hosted by local poets\, highlighting the work of poets we love\,  and raising awareness of the need to conserve and preserve our beloved Rio. The walks will lead to a bosque  poetry anthology\, to be edited by Otero. “Walking With Poets” takes place on the fourth Thursday of each month from July through October. \nOtero is a tenth generation New Mexican. Her work has appeared in New Mexico Magazine\, Brevity\, Puerto del Sol\, and other literary journals and she is the author of Malinche’s Daughter (essays). \nOtero is Creative Director of El Valle Encantado\, an organization promoting sustainable development initiatives in Albuquerque’s Atrisco neighborhood. She holds a B.A. in History from Harvard and an M.F.A. in Creative Writing from Vermont College.\nFree
