SUMMARY:Cervantes Film Series: Volavérunt
DESCRIPTION:12:00 pm MST (available for 96 hours)\nAll the films can be seen in the link below:\nhttps://vimeo.com/showcase/aitana-sanchez-gijon-goya-honor \nInstituto Cervantes Film Series Celebrating Aitana Sánchez-Gijón\, winner of the 2025 Honorary Goya Award from the Spanish Film Academy \nThis blockbuster\, Volavérunt\, directed by Bigas Luna with an international cast and crew\, stars Aitana Sánchez-Gijón\, who plays the Duchess of Alba. Doña Cayetana was a key woman in the court of King Carlos IV with a personality based on intrigue\, passion\, and desire. \nThe film’s title evokes an ambiguity that can be traced back to Goya’s Caprichos engraving no. 61\, which shares the title of this film. The film’s grandious photography and costumes bring the lavish world of the late 18th century to life. \nSynopsis: One morning in the summer of 1802\, Cayetana\, the Duchess of Alba\, is found dead. A few hours before\, at the inauguration party at her palace\, many of her admirers and detractors were present: Goya\, Godoy\, Prince Ferdinand\, Pepita Tudó and Pignatelli\, among them. Although it is admitted as official version that the beautiful duchess died of natural causes\, later confessions and revealed secrets invite to think that Cayetana could have been poisoned. [Source: Instituto de la Cinematografía y de las Artes Audiovisuales (ICAA) database]. \nScreening: Volavérunt |  Director: Bigas Luna | Year: 1999 | Format: Digital | Running time: Largometraje – 118 min | Genre: Fiction/Ficción | Country: France and Spain | Original version: Spahish/español | Subtitles: English/inglés\, French/francés\, Italian/italiano\, Portuguese/portugués de Brasil y español | Rated PG13/Calificacion: 13+ \n \nThe annual programming on the Cervantes Institute’s Vimeo channel begins with a cycle dedicated to actress Aitana Sánchez-Gijón\, who will receive the Goya Honorary Award 2025 on February 8 in Granada. \nAs expressed by the president of the Film Academy\, Fernando Méndez-Leite\, she is “an actress much loved and respected by her peers and recognized by the public and critics since her beginnings. A complete actress: serious\, responsible\, competent\, approachable and who knows how to give truth\, sincerity and depth to all her work”. \nThe titles in the series have been selected by the artist herself: in addition to Volavérunt\, a film by Bigas Luna for which she was awarded Best Actress at the San Sebastian Festival\, her proposal includes essential films from the end of the 20th century directed by outstanding directors of Spanish cinema\, such as Vicente Aranda\, Bigas Luna\, Jaime Chávarri and Fernando Colomo. \nProgram\n*February 6: Volavérunt (1999)\, by Bigas Luna\n*February 13: Celos (1999)\, by Vicente Aranda\n*February 20: Sus ojos se cerraron y el mundo sigue andando (1996)\, by Jaime Chávarri\n*February 27: Bajarse al moro (1988)\, by Fernando Colomo

DESCRIPTION:12:00 pm MST (available for 96 hours)\nAll the films can be seen in the link below:\nhttps://vimeo.com/showcase/aitana-sanchez-gijon-goya-honor \nInstituto Cervantes Film Series Celebrating Aitana Sánchez-Gijón\, winner of the 2025 Honorary Goya Award from the Spanish Film Academy \nAfter many years of trying to make the film Celos\, the great Spanish filmmaker Vicente Aranda delves into the complicated territory of jealousy to narrate an agonizing and fatal story. This production incorporates the director’s obsessions with the limits of love and sexual desire\, between which there is always violence. \nAitana Sánchez-Gijón’s interpretation of the main character displays a range of sophisticated nuances that contribute to the development of a narrative arc full of surprises. \nSynopsis: Antonio and Carmen are happy and about to get married. On the eve of the wedding\, Antonio finds an old photograph of his future wife with another man. From that moment on\, jealousy assaults Antonio and begins to transform his character and behavior. To save their relationship\, Carmen must confront her murky past. \nScreening: Celos |  Director: Vicente Aranda | Year: 1999 | Format: Digital | Running time: Largometraje – 110 min | Genre: Fiction/Ficción | Country: Spain/España | Original version: Spanish/español | Subtitles: English/inglés\, French/francés\, Italian/italiano\, Portuguese/portugués de Brasil y español | Rated R/Calificacion: 18+ \n \nThe annual programming on the Cervantes Institute’s Vimeo channel begins with a series dedicated to actress Aitana Sánchez-Gijón\, who will receive the Goya Honorary Award 2025 on February 8 in Granada. \nAs expressed by the president of the Film Academy\, Fernando Méndez-Leite\, she is “an actress much loved and respected by her peers and recognized by the public and critics since her beginnings. The film is in conversation with another classic from  director Jaime Chávarri\, best known for his series Las cosas del querer. \nSynopsis: In 1930s Buenos Aires\, a Spanish immigrant meets a tango singer\, considered the best Gardel imitator. Juanita tries to make Renzo look more and more like her idol\, until one day the tango singer is given a delicate mission: to imitate the real Gardel. DESCRIPTION:12:00 pm MST (available for 96 hours)\nAll the films can be seen in the link below:\nhttps://vimeo.com/showcase/aitana-sanchez-gijon-goya-honor \nInstituto Cervantes Film Series Celebrating Aitana Sánchez-Gijón\, Honorary Goya \nWhen Fernando Colomo undertook this adaptation of a play by the same name\, Bajarse al moro\, he was already a key director of the cinematic milestone that was called “la comedia madrileña” (The Madrid Comedy) and that featured the auteur cinema of the eighties. \nThis film departs from the festive tone that guided his previous titles to get much closer to his characters and present a world where other variables such as class or the future reveal a less playful environment. Aitana Sánchez-Gijón’s character makes a place for herself among her three co-stars who are already part of the canon of our best performers. \nSynopsis: Chusa shares an apartment with her cousin\, a drug dealer\, and her boyfriend\, a policeman. To help her cousin\, Chusa sometimes smuggles weed from Morocco. Since everyone smokes a little\, there is always a need for more. Chusa then decides to go to Morocco with a friend\, but this time things don’t go as she thought. DESCRIPTION:12:00 pm MST\nAll the films can be seen in the link below:\nhttps://vimeo.com/showcase/la-mirada-tabu \n2018 was a landmark year for women directors and screenwriters working in the film industry. An example of this is this magnificent debut by Claudia Barral: a search in experimental format of human memory in the inhabited and loved spaces and the imprint we leave on them. Sensations and memories that we rarely name out loud. \nSynopsis: Places explores the limits of time and its passage. DESCRIPTION:7:30 pm Fridays & Saturdays\n1:00 pm Sundays\n*Thursday\, April 3rd at 7:30 pm is a special preview/community night \nNHCC | Wells Fargo Auditorium \nThe NHCC and our friends and partners at the Vortex Theatre invite you to experience a captivating original play adapted from Margarita Engle’s award-winning young adult novel in verse\, Lion Island: Cuba’s Warrior of Words. \nSet in 1870s Cuba\, this powerful story delves into the complexities of racial\, ethnic\, linguistic\, and national identities. It is one of the most transgressive works that have come to the festival La Mirada Tabú\, not only because of its subject matter\, but also because it gives voice to thoughts that many parents have had at some point and would never confess. \nSynopsis: When they are born they are beautiful\, almost perfect. A group of masked Montagues risk further conflict by gatecrashing the Capulet’s ball. A young lovesick Romeo Montague falls instantly in love with Juliet Capulet\, who is due to marry her father’s choice\, Count Paris. With the help of Juliet’s nurse\, the women arrange for the couple be married the following day by Friar Lorence. Romeo’s attempt to halt a street fight leads to the death of his friend Mercutio and he kills Tybalt\, Juliet’s own cousin\, in revenge. Romeo is banished from Verona.
