SUMMARY:Festival Ballet Albuquerque: Romeo & Juliet Ballet
DESCRIPTION:7:00 pm Saturday\n2:00 pm Sunday \nFestival Ballet Albuquerque presents an original production of Romeo & Juliet\, the two star-crossed lovers\, by William Shakespeare\, to the music by Sergei Prokofiev. It is a story about an age-old feud between two powerful families\, Capulets and Montagues\, erupting into bloodshed. A group of masked Montagues risk further conflict by gatecrashing the Capulet’s ball. A young lovesick Romeo Montague falls instantly in love with Juliet Capulet\, who is due to marry her father’s choice\, Count Paris. With the help of Juliet’s nurse\, the women arrange for the couple be married the following day by Friar Lorence. Romeo’s attempt to halt a street fight leads to the death of his friend Mercutio and he kills Tybalt\, Juliet’s own cousin\, in revenge. Romeo is banished from Verona. In a desperate attempt to be reunited with Romeo\, Juliet follows the Friar’s plot and fakes her own death. The message fails to reach Romeo\, and believing Juliet dead\, he takes his life in her tomb. When Juliet wakes and realizes his mistake\, she follows him into death. The grieving families agree to end their feud. \nAlex Ossadnik\, a native of former East Germany was trained under government scholarship on the Palucca School in Dresden from 1979-1987. During his performing career he danced for companies in Weimar\, Germany\, Bordeaux\, France\, Nevada Dance Theatre and Oregon Ballet Theatre. He co-founded numerous companies\, including Santa Fe Festival Ballet and Ballet Pro Musica. Not a stranger to Albuquerque’s dance scene\, his work is known to be approachable and engaging for all audiences. While having choreographed for Festival Ballet Albuquerque several times\, “Romeo and Juliet” is his first major collaboration to the iconic score by Sergei Prokofiev. \n$14\, $22\, $30\, $40 & $49 w/ $2 discount for seniors and children 10years old and younger \n\n*The event is a rental event not an NHCC production. SUMMARY:Festival Flamenco Alburquerque: Ballet Flamenco de Andalucía: Pineda
DESCRIPTION:8:30 pm \nNHCC | Albuquerque Journal Theatre \nNational Institute of Flamenco and the NHCC present Festival Flamenco Alburquerque: Ballet Flamenco de Andalucía: “PINEDA.” Federico García Lorca wrote Mariana Pineda “at barely twenty years old and with a strong romantic flavor\,” as he stated in an interview after its first premiere. However\, the origins of the play trace back to the poet’s childhood in Granada and young Federico’s encounter with the bronze statue of the liberal heroine\, “proud upon the column\, her hair loose\, her gaze fixed on the sky\, clutching the flag of liberty against her body.” Lorca also recalled himself holding hands with other children\, singing the verses of a popular ballad “in a melancholic tone\, which seemed tragic to me.” Early in his career as a playwright\, the poet felt the poetic imperative to transform that “profound childhood impression” into a theatrical work. \n“There are a thousand different Marianas of Pineda. The heroic Mariana\, the motherly Mariana\, the Mariana in love\, the embroidering Mariana\, but I wasn’t going to ‘create’ them all.” This is how Federico García Lorca described his protagonist after the 1927 premiere of the play. Among all these possible Marianas\, we have chosen to focus on the one Lorca himself evoked: “a woman of deep Spanish roots\, who sings of love and freedom in the verses of her life in a way that captures the universal essence of these two great sentiments\,” embodying “freedom itself.” \nIn her debut as Artistic Director of the Ballet Flamenco de Andalucía\, Granada-born Patricia Guerrero takes on the challenge of giving body and soul to Pineda. This version explores the full spiritual and expressive power of Lorca’s dramatic poem. Accompanied by an exceptional team\, Patricia Guerrero delivers a vibrant and electrifying Pineda\, both rooted in Granada and universal\, and unequivocally flamenco. A dramatic poem brought to life through dance because\, in Federico’s own words\, “the stage can only be emotion and poetry: in the word\, in the action\, and in the gesture.” \n$69\, $83\, $99\, $113 & $129. *Price includes the NHCC’s $4 fee. \n\n*All NHCC performance/event ticket sales go through the National Hispanic Cultural Center Website. SUMMARY:Festival Flamenco Alburquerque: Rafaela Carrasco y compañía: Nocturna
DESCRIPTION:8:30 pm \nNHCC | Albuquerque Journal Theatre \nNational Institute of Flamenco and the NHCC present Festival Flamenco Alburquerque: Rafaela Carrasco y compañía: “Nocturna.” Nocturna is a flamenco performance that delves into the mysteries of the night\, exploring themes of insomnia\, dreams\, and the passage of time. Choreographed and directed by Rafaela Carrasco\, with dramaturgy by Álvaro Tato\, the show journeys through the emotional and psychological landscapes of sleepless nights. \nCombining dance\, music\, and poetry\, Nocturna evokes the contradictions of the night: tranquility and madness\, love and fear\, dream and nightmare. The production features a rich interplay of live flamenco singing\, piano\, and electronic music\, inspired by J.S. Bach’s Goldberg Variations\, silences\, and original compositions. \nThe dancers navigate moments of solitude and togetherness on stage\, reflecting the transformation and movement the night imposes on the human spirit. It is a poetic\, deeply evocative experience that strips the soul bare\, revealing the most intimate emotions hidden in darkness. \nNocturna is an ambitious work\, seamlessly blending tradition and modernity to reimagine flamenco’s emotional and artistic possibilities \n$59\, $73\, $89\, $103 & $119. *Price includes the NHCC’s $4 fee. \n\n*All NHCC performance/event ticket sales go through the National Hispanic Cultural Center Website. SUMMARY:Festival Flamenco Alburquerque: David Coria y compañía: Los Bailes Robados
DESCRIPTION:8:30 pm \nNHCC | Albuquerque Journal Theatre \nNational Institute of Flamenco and the NHCC present Festival Flamenco Alburquerque: David Coria y compañía: “Los Bailes Robados.” Set in a forest that shifts between chaos and sublime beauty—a place of broken bodies and starry skies—Los Bailes Robados invites you to enter\, feel the earth\, and tread fallen leaves with dancing steps. It beckons you to become a dancing being\, moving endlessly with freedom\, embracing the dance as a gift. \nThis ensemble creation blends political critique with social advocacy. Dancers traverse the stage in a journey from hysteria and uncontrolled frenzy to dramatic stillness and harmony\, embodying a collective soul that births a new\, fluid entity. The musicians amplify these cries\, urging the bodies to exorcise their dance\, denounce oppression\, and invoke liberty—crying out for the woman\, the mad\, the different\, the witch. \nInfused with Spanish dance\, flamenco\, and avant-garde spontaneity\, the work questions societal norms and codes over time. Using choreography\, theater\, imagery\, music\, and sound\, it explores the depth of contemporary flamenco’s artistic potential in the 21st century. \n$59\, $73\, $89\, $103 & $119. *Price includes the NHCC’s $4 fee. \n\n*All NHCC performance/event ticket sales go through the National Hispanic Cultural Center Website. DESCRIPTION:August 15-17\, 22-24 & 29-31\, 2025\n7:30 pm Fridays & Saturdays\, 2:00 pm Sundays \nNHCC | Wells Fargo Auditorium \nSandia Performing Arts Company and the National Hispanic Cultural Center presents Anonymously\, a borderline comedic melodramatic farce. Our story focuses on a butch Hispanic female who has a soft spot for a co-worker but doesn’t want him to get the wrong idea\, so she sends flowers to him anonymously. Some people will go to great lengths to find out who sent those flowers. Before you know it\, everyone wants to know. \nWhile examining the universal human desire to be let in on a secret\, Anonymously also displays a Hispanic style featuring Lowriders and Pachucos. Spanish words are integrated with English\, and it creates a Spanglish. It should make some people see how hard it is to make sense of language. \n$25 w/ $2 discount for NHCC members and $15 for children 10 years old and younger \n \n\n*All NHCC performance/event ticket sales go through the National Hispanic Cultural Center Website. SUMMARY:NHCC Fall Film Series: I Dream in Another Language
DESCRIPTION:7:00 pm \nThe NHCC Fall Film Series features Hispanic filmmakers that preserve our stories\, promote our experiences and advance the vast cultural identity of our gente. This film series continues with I Dream in Another Language (2017) on Thursday\, Oct. 9. \nA millenary language agonizes: Its last two speakers\, Evaristo and Isauro (70’s) had a quarrel 50 years ago and haven’t spoken to each other since. Martin\, a linguist\, will undertake the challenge of bringing the two old friends back together and convince them to talk again in order for him to be able to obtain a record of the language. Yet\, hidden in the past\, in the core of the jungle\, lies a secret hidden in the language that makes it difficult to believe that the heart of Zikril will beat again. (IMDB). \n“Poetic Mexican film raises philosophical questions about what is lost when a language and by extension\, our elders’ memory is allowed to fade away unpreserved.” (Variety) \nFree Community Event.
