DESCRIPTION:7:30 pm \nCarnaval\, the festive season occurring before Lent in many countries\, including Latin American and Caribbean nations as well as parts of the United States\, is one of the world’s most widespread celebrations and one of its biggest parties. Carnaval was first celebrated at the NHCC in 2002 and has been part of the Center’s regular seasonal programming since 2006\, with regular performances by presenting partners Frank Leto & PANdemonium and Pilar Leto & the Odara Dance Ensemble. Carnaval 2022 marks the NHCC’s 16th annual Carnaval Celebration—a dazzling spectacle of vibrant dance\, stirring music\, colorful costumes\, an engaging storyline\, and special surprises. Based on a children’s book of the same name\, written by Frank Leto and illustrated by his six-year-old granddaughter\, the show follows a little girl named Queenie as she learns how Carnaval is celebrated in a variety of locations. \n$17\, $22\, $27 with $2 discount for seniors\, children 12 and younger\, & NHCC members \n \nAs the book is read to Queenie on stage\, it will be projected on screen for the audience to view as well\, alternating with live music and dance. This one-of-a-kind celebration features Frank Leto’s original music based on Carnaval traditions of Brazil\, Trinidad\, Cuba\, and New Orleans. \nFrank Leto\, leader and director of the band PANdemonium\, with which he has recorded three world music CDs\, is a multitalented instrumentalist who plays Brazilian and Afro-Cuban percussion and Trinidadian steel drums. His love for rhythms has taken him to Brazil\, Puerto Rico\, and Cuba; while in Cuba\, he studied soneros\, tres\, and batá\, as reflected in his original compositions and performances. Pilar Leto\, founder and artistic director of the Odara Dance Ensemble\, is a dancer\, choreographer\, and producer who has performed and taught Brazilian\, Caribbean\, and Afro-Cuban dance for over 25 years. She also studied in Cuba\, with premier dancers of the Conjunto Folklórico Nacional and Raíces Profundas. Classical and contemporary dance combine with the eclectic music of two-time Grammy award-winning Taos Pueblo musician Robert Mirabal in this reflection of New Mexican cultures through dance\, music\, and spoken word. Mirabal collaborates with Festival Ballet Albuquerque’s artistic director Patricia Dickinson Wells and with internationally renowned New York City Ballet dancer Jock Soto\, of Navajo and Puerto Rican descent. Soto\, who is originally from Gallup\, NM\, and will also make guest appearances onstage\, now lives in Eagle Nest\, NM. \n$14\, $20\, $29\, $39\, $49 w/ $2 discount for seniors\, children under 12 and NHCC members \n \nAdditional choreographers for the production are native New Mexican Dominic Guerra and internationally known Vladimir Conde-Reche\, a native of São Paulo\, Brazil. Additional guest artists include the Trujillo Family traditional Native American dancers. \nRobert Mirabal\, dedicated to keeping alive the centuries-old customs of Taos Pueblo\, is also a leading proponent of world music\, and has merged his Indigenous American sound with the music of Africa\, Asia\, and the Caribbean\, tapping into a planetary pulse with a style that defies characterization. His 2002 breakthrough PBS special\, Music from a Painted Cave\, is unsurpassed in Native American theatrical expression. \nA former principal dancer with the New York City Ballet\, Jock Soto was one of the last dancers to be personally selected by founder George Balanchine when he was barely 16. He danced featured roles in over 40 ballets\, of which more than 35 were created for him. The author of Every Step You Take and the subject of the documentary Water Flowing Together (the name of his Navajo clan)\, Soto teaches partnering and technique classes at the School of American Ballet\, where he has been a permanent member of the faculty since 1996. \nSacred Journeys III brings together the rich and diverse culture of our state\, while providing extraordinary role models for New Mexico’s youth. \nSACRED JOURNEYS II: The Live Performance Recording was honored to be screened in 2021 at the Red Nation International Film festival and the American Indian Film Festival.

Hay first came to prominence as the lead vocalist of Men at Work\, which was formed in 1979 and went on to become a multi-platinum-selling musical act\, winning a Grammy for best new artist in 1982. The original band was short-lived\, however\, and after 1985 Hay became primarily a solo artist.
