  • Festival Flamenco Internacional: New Mexico True Closing Celebration

    4 pm to 7 pm Join us for the New Mexico True Closing Celebration for Festival Flamenco Internacional de Alburquerque 2017. The closing celebration for the festival’s 30th year, sponsored by the National Institute of Flamenco, the National Hispanic Cultural Center, the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs, and the New Mexico Tourism Department, will feature an exciting and diverse showcase of national and international flamenco student groups.   • Festival Flamenco Internacional: The After Party

    10 pm to 1 am Join us for Festival Flamenco: The After Party to close out Festival Flamenco Internacional de Alburquerque’s 30th year! After our final show, we will be having a party on the National Hispanic Cultural Center’s Plaza Mayor, featuring the band Son Como Son.   • Summer Institute Performances: The Manoa Project

    Thursday—8 pm Friday—8 pm The NHCC’s Summer Institutes—Circo Latino, the Manoa Project, and Voces—join the Manoa Project Teen Ensemble for a stirring performance of a fully produced original show written and created by a group of theatre students who have trained and worked together over four weeks. The performance, inspired by themes of community, agriculture, farming, and our relationship with nature, will be based on the NHCC Art Museum’s exhibit Outstanding in His Field: San Ysidro—Patron Saint of Farmers. $10 w/ $2 discount for students

    Thursday—5 pm Friday—10 am The NHCC’s Summer Institutes—Circo Latino, the Manoa Project, and Voces— come see young artists, ages 8-13, present an original show featuring trapeze, juggling, stilting, acrobatics, clowning, live music, and more, exploring themes of community, agriculture, farming and our relationship with nature as presented in the NHCC Art Museum exhibit Outstanding in His Field: San Ysidro—Patron Saint of Farmers.   • Film: The Sea Inside/Mar Adentro

    7 pm The Sea Inside is based on the life story of Ramón Sampedro, a Spanish ship mechanic and part-time poet who was left quadriplegic and bedridden at the age of 26 following a diving accident. Sampedro fought a 30-year campaign for the legal right to end his life with dignity; despite his wish to die, he was able to inspire those who were close to him to live life to the fullest.   • La Pasión de Mariachi: Salute to Mariachi History and Excellence

    6 pm (doors open at 5:30 pm) La Pasión de Mariachi is a celebration of the art form of mariachi. The purpose is to create greater awareness, understanding, and appreciation of traditional and authentic mariachi music by providing insights into the music, band member make-up, and instruments. Mariachi groups, like orchestras, are typically comprised of 18 to 20 members; many of the instruments, such as the guitarrón, are unique to this form of music. Performances will demonstrate various styles within the genre, including son, huapango, and ranchera. (more...)

    7 pm The “princesas” of the film’s title are two young prostitutes on the streets of Madrid: Spanish-born Caye, who is hiding her profession from her middle-class family and is disturbed by the influx of competition from other countries, and Zulema, an undocumented immigrant from the Dominican Republic who is sending money home to her mother and son. As the two struggle to survive for different reasons under stressful circumstances, an unlikely and touching friendship develops.
