DESCRIPTION:February 2\, 7 & 9\, 2020\n2 pm—Sundays\n7:30 pm—Friday \nOpera Southwest presents Daniel Catán’s Il Postino\, a fully staged opera with orchestra\, sung in Spanish with both Spanish and English translation supertitles\, and presented in two acts with one intermission. \nPresented in partnership with the National Hispanic Cultural Center\, Il Postino is based on the novel Ardiente Paciencia by Antonio Skármeta\, as well as the film by Michael Radford. When exiled Chilean poet Pablo Neruda arrives on a tiny Italian island\, he receives so much fan mail that Mario is hired as his personal postman. Mario soon becomes Neruda’s student\, learning the art of poetry to woo a local barmaid. Inspired by Neruda\, Mario’s poetic voice continues to take wing as he expresses the struggles of his fellow working class villagers. The work\, based on the novel Ardiente paciencia by Antonio Skármeta and the film Il Postino by Michael Radford\, adheres loosely to events in the life of Chilean poet Pablo Neruda\, and integrates themes of love and friendship along with political and spiritual conflict. \nLike Il Postino\, Pablo Larraín’s film Neruda is based loosely on events in the life of its subject\, at a time when Chile’s beloved poet has been forced into hiding and is being pursued by his would-be nemesis\, the police inspector Peluchonneau. Larraín describes the film as “Nerudian”—not a biopic\, despite its title\, but rather\, an “invention informed by biography.” \nWe hope that our audiences will enjoy both these explorations of the rich and complex cosmos created by the life and work of this extraordinary artist.

SUMMARY:Los Pastores de Belén
DESCRIPTION:3 pm \nLos Pastores\, the New Mexican Shepherds Play\, was brought to New Mexico in 17th century from Spain. The play follows the adventures\, antics\, and battles of shepherds\, angels\, and devils. On their journey to Bethlehem to take their presents\, the shepherds are waylaid by Demonio. The audience is amused by the mischief of Bartolo\, the lazy shepherd\, and the rhetorical prowess and swordplay of San Miguel. \nBefore it was revived in 1973\, when a manuscript was discovered in a home in Las Nutrias\, the last time that Los Pastores had been performed in this area was in 1929. Filomena Baca and a group of parishioners of Nuestra Señora de Belén have been performing the play ever since. \n(taken from Enrique Lamadrid’s “Reflections on Los Pastores“) \nFree public event \nA discussion and Q&A session before the performance will be led by Filomena Baca and Dante Berry\, one of the actors in the play\, which has been performed by members of his family for generations.

SUMMARY:There Must Be Other Names for the River
DESCRIPTION:7 pm (doors open at 6 pm) \n516 ARTS\, the National Hispanic Cultural Center\, and UNM Art & Ecology Program artists Marisa Demarco\, Dylan McLaughlin\, and Jessica Zeglin present There Must Be Other Names for the River. This composition for six singers is based on streamflow data from the river known today as the Rio Grande. Each singer channels the river\, representing a point where flows were observed and recorded. Arranged in the shape of the water body within the performance space\, the singers’ voices change in intensity with the flows and distort over time as human interference is felt along the length of the river. After embodying past decades\, the singers project possible futures for the voice of the river and the bodies through which its waters flow. The artists say\, “The Rio Grande is itself a living being who has experiences over time including birth\, growth\, and possibly death…. By listening and embodying\, can we change our relationships with the river and see beyond its uses to humans? On this auspicious day\, people light diyas (lamps) and candles all around their houses. They perform Laxmi Puja in the evening and seek divine blessings from the Goddess of Wealth. Roaming the countryside of the Southwest during the 40s and 50s\, Robb recorded and transcribed over 3\,000 Hispano folk songs\, the largest collection of its time. This documentary celebrates the life of this adventurous musician and the modern day ethnomusicologists who continue to record and archive New Mexico’s disappearing folk music traditions. SUMMARY:Opera Southwest Presents Bottesini’s Alì Babà
DESCRIPTION:October 20\, 25 & 27\, 2019\n2 pm—Sundays\n7:30 pm—Friday \nOpera Southwest presents Alì Babà\, a fully staged opera with orchestra\, sung in Italian with English translation supertitles and presented in three acts with one intermission. With a libretto based on “Alì Babà and the Forty Thieves\,” the well-known and lively story from One Thousand and One Nights\, Alì Babà was composed by Giovanni Bottesini\, an Italian composer and double bass virtuoso known as the “Paganini of the bass.” \n$19\, $39\, $59\, $79\, $99; discounts for groups of eight or more and patrons 30 and younger \n \nThe opera premiered in 1871 in London\, with considerable acclaim and numerous performances. Later\, however\, the score was lost\, and it has not been heard in well over a century. Most films in the series are from countries whose artists are represented in this year’s festival. \nThis searching\, Oscar-nominated documentary about the European immigration crisis focuses on the Mediterranean island of Lampedusa\, 150 miles south of Sicily\, where thousands of people arrive each year from Africa and the Middle East en route to the continent. Four hundred thousand have landed on the island over the past two decades; fifteen thousand have died on the way. Fire at Sea contrasts the daily life of the native islanders\, particularly the bucolic childhood of 12-year-old Samuele\, with the danger\, misery\, and death confronting the refugees who attempt to make their way across the Strait of Sicily.
