SUMMARY:Los Pastores de Belén
DESCRIPTION:3 pm \nLos Pastores\, the New Mexican Shepherds Play\, was brought to New Mexico in 17th century from Spain. The play follows the adventures\, antics\, and battles of shepherds\, angels\, and devils. On their journey to Bethlehem to take their presents\, the shepherds are waylaid by Demonio. SUMMARY:There Must Be Other Names for the River
DESCRIPTION:7 pm (doors open at 6 pm) \n516 ARTS\, the National Hispanic Cultural Center\, and UNM Art & Ecology Program artists Marisa Demarco\, Dylan McLaughlin\, and Jessica Zeglin present There Must Be Other Names for the River. This composition for six singers is based on streamflow data from the river known today as the Rio Grande. Each singer channels the river\, representing a point where flows were observed and recorded. Arranged in the shape of the water body within the performance space\, the singers’ voices change in intensity with the flows and distort over time as human interference is felt along the length of the river. After embodying past decades\, the singers project possible futures for the voice of the river and the bodies through which its waters flow. The artists say\, “The Rio Grande is itself a living being who has experiences over time including birth\, growth\, and possibly death…. By listening and embodying\, can we change our relationships with the river and see beyond its uses to humans? Can we hear the river as more than a resource?” The original sound art performance is presented in conjunction with Species in Peril Along the Rio Grande\, an exhibition currently on view at 516 ARTS. \nFree public event \nFor more information on Species in Peril Along the Rio Grande click HERE. \nTo download a Species in Peril Along the Rio Grande program click HERE. \nThank you to our Performing Arts Season Sponsors Heritage Hotels and Resorts\, the Albuquerque Journal and Southwest Airlines!

SUMMARY:¡Globalquerque! International Cinema Series: Fire at Sea/Fuocoammare (Italy)
DESCRIPTION:7 pm \nIn September\, the Bank of America Free Thursday Film Series showcases the ¡Globalquerque! International Cinema Series\, presented in partnership with ¡Globalquerque!\, New Mexico’s Fifteenth Celebration of World Music and Culture\, returning to the NHCC on September 20 & 21. Most films in the series are from countries whose artists are represented in this year’s festival. \nThis searching\, Oscar-nominated documentary about the European immigration crisis focuses on the Mediterranean island of Lampedusa\, 150 miles south of Sicily\, where thousands of people arrive each year from Africa and the Middle East en route to the continent. Four hundred thousand have landed on the island over the past two decades; fifteen thousand have died on the way. Fire at Sea contrasts the daily life of the native islanders\, particularly the bucolic childhood of 12-year-old Samuele\, with the danger\, misery\, and death confronting the refugees who attempt to make their way across the Strait of Sicily. Through extended observation rather than narrative explanation\, it shows how the normal and mundane can exist side-by-side with the horrific and tragic. \n2016; directed by Gianfranco Rosi; Italian with English subtitles; 114 minutes; not rated. \nFree ticketed event; tickets available one hour before show

Her only options are to run or fight… and Mi’gMaq don’t run. \n2013; directed by Jeff Barnaby; English; 88 minutes; rated R. \nFree ticketed event; tickets available one hour before show

SUMMARY:¡Cine Magnífico!: 7th Annual Latino Film Festival: Black is Beltza
DESCRIPTION:Opening Film / NM Premiere \n6 pm Opening Reception\, 8 pm Film Screening and Q & A with Fermin Muguruza\, Director \n¡Cine Magnífico! celebrates Spanish and Latin American culture through presentation of some of the best of modern cinema in a weekend-long program\, featuring work by first-time filmmakers and established masters alike. The subject matter runs the gamut from comedies\, action\, romances and documentary films\, to dramatic masterpieces. Some of the riskiest and most innovative films of recent years will be included. \nOctober 1965. Pamplona’s troupe of giant figures\, a typical sight at the San Fermín festivities\, is invited to parade along Fifth Avenue in New York. But not all of them will be allowed to appear: due to racial discrimination\, the American authorities will ban the participation of the two black giants. Based on this true event\, Black Is Beltza tells the story of Manex\, the young man responsible for carrying one of the giants. Embarked on a long\, unexpected journey\, Manex will witness key events in history: the race riots arising from the assassination of Malcolm X\, the eccentricities of the characters in The Factory\, the alliance between the Cuban secret service and the Black Panthers\, and the proto-hippy psychedelia of the first music festivals. \nFree with a RSVP to prensa.albuquerque@cervantes.es or milly@cinemagnifico.com \n \nOctubre de 1965. \nSpain | 2018 | Run Time: 80 min | Genre: Animation for adults \n\n¡Cine Magnífico! is organized by Instituto Cervantes\, the National Hispanic Cultural Center and UNM Latin American & Iberian Institute so as to be at the forefront of the movement to increase cultural opportunities for the entire New Mexico community and to bring Latinos and non-Latinos together to share common experiences through film. \n¡Cine Magnífico! will be held September 4-8\, 2019 at the National Hispanic Cultural Center in Albuquerque.\nhttps://cinemagnifico.com/
