SUMMARY:Film: La Nana/The Maid
DESCRIPTION:6 pm\nPlease note that a pre-screening conversation about the film\, led by Dr. Elizabeth Hutchison\, will begin at this time. The film will be shown at 7 pm \nRaquel has worked as a live-in\, uniformed maid for a well-to-do family in Santiago\, Chile for over 20 years. Now 41\, she is part of the family in some ways\, as emotional attachments—both positive and negative—attest\, but in others remains apart\, even expendable. When her employers decide that she needs help and hire an additional maid\, Raquel feels that she must fight for her place in the household. Her “guerrilla war” against a series of newcomers reaches increasingly audacious heights\, until someone quite different turns up and Raquel’s world begins\, very gently\, to expand.  La Nana\, described as a “microcosm of Latin social hierarchy\,” also focuses on one woman’s journey to free herself from a mental servitude of her own making. \n2009; Sebastián Silva; Spanish with English subtitles; 135 minutes; not rated. \nFree ticketed event; tickets available one hour before show \nThis film\, rescheduled from March 2019\, is presented in partnership with Women’s International Study Center (WISC) as part of the Bank of America Free Thursday Film Series. Dr. Elizabeth Hutchison\, WISC Fellow-in-Residence\, will introduce the film and lead a discussion with representatives of other community organizations\, beginning at 6 pm\, prior to the screening. Please join us for refreshments and further conversation in the lobby afterwards!

SUMMARY:Film: The Mamboniks
DESCRIPTION:2 pm \nLox and bagels meet salsa and congos in Peabody Award winner Lex Gillespie’s joyous and singular celebration of the Jewish love affair with Latin music and dance\, set in New York\, Havana\, Miami Beach\, and the Catskill Mountains. During the 1950s\, free-spirited\, mostly Jewish dancers from New York City fell head over heels for the mambo\, the hot dance from Cuba that became a worldwide sensation. Their love for Latin rhythms earned them a nickname: the “mamboniks.” Now retired\, yet still dancing in Florida\, a lovable\, somewhat zany collection of dancers from the ‘50s share a passion that age has not cooled. With colorful first-person accounts and an infectious Afro-Cuban soundtrack including Tito Puente\, Celia Cruz\, and “mambo king” Pérez Prado\, The Mamboniks explores a largely unexamined and exhilarating aspect of Jewish life and culture\, and a time when Jews\, Latinos\, and African-Americans met on the dance floor\, although America was racially segregated and anti-Semitism was commonplace. \n2018; Lex Gillespie; English; 89 minutes; not rated. \nFollowing the screening\, join us in the lobby outside the theatre to celebrate the film\, and the finale of the 6th Annual ABQ Jewish Film Fest\, with a “Cuban nosh” provided by La Fonda del Bosque and a cash bar provided by Pop Fizz. \nThe Jewish Community Center’s 6th Annual ABQ Jewish Film Fest features six recently released film premieres\, weaving a colorful tapestry of uniquely Jewish stories that come from around the world. The NHCC is partnering with the JCC on the screenings of Leona (July 20) and The Mamboniks (July 28). \nTickets are being sold by the Jewish Community Center; $10 in advance\, $12 at the door\, $55 for a full festival pass (6th Annual ABQ Jewish Film Fest)

SUMMARY:Film: ¡Las Sandinistas!
DESCRIPTION:7 pm \n¡Las Sandinistas! documents a watershed moment in history\, when a group of Nicaraguan women shattered barriers to lead rebel troops in battle and reshape their country with landmark social reforms during the 1979 Sandinista Revolution and the ensuing U.S.-backed Contra War\, only to face renewed marginalization by their male peers once the wars ended. The film centers on the personal stories of Dora María Téllez\, the young medical student who became a key Sandinista general\, and four of her revolutionary allies. Now\, amid staggering levels of gender violence in Nicaragua\, these same women brave the streets once again to lead popular movements for equality and democracy. Presented in partnership with New Mexico PBS as part of the Bank of America Free Thursday Film Series. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with director Jenny Murray. \n2018; Jenny Murray; English and Spanish with English subtitles; 60 minutes; not rated. \nFree ticketed event; tickets available one hour before show

SUMMARY:Domingos en Arte: Edmar Castañeda
DESCRIPTION:6 pm \nDomingos en Arte\, the summer music and dance series presented by MelazaMusic and the National Hispanic Cultural Center\, enters its fourth season\, with concerts scheduled through August. We have invited a wide range of Latin artists for family-friendly summer Sundays that feature live music\, drinks\, and delicious Latin cuisine in the NHCC’s enchanting Fountain Courtyard. \nOn July 21\, a partnership with Outpost Productions and the New Mexico Jazz Festival brings Colombian-born harp virtuoso Edmar Castañeda to the courtyard stage. Castañeda has forged a unique musical path\, bringing a wholly original voice to jazz and other genres\, and taking the world by storm with his virtuosity and command of his instrument. A consummate collaborator\, he has formed partnerships with Gonzalo Rubalcaba\, Wynton Marsalis\, and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra\, among others\, and has performed at venues including the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts\, the Tanglewood Jazz Festival\, and the 10th Annual World Harp Congress. “If you aren’t watching Castañeda in action\, you might think you’re listening to an ensemble rather than a solo player…. Between both hands\, you hear the overlapping polyrhythms of joropo\, a complex\, triple-meter dance from South America.” (Hartford Courant) \n$20 w/ $5 discount for NHCC members and Outpost members; free for children 12 and younger \nThank you to our Performing Arts Season Sponsors Heritage Hotels and Resorts\, the Albuquerque Journal and Southwest Airlines!

SUMMARY:Film: Leona
DESCRIPTION:7 pm \nA universal tale of star-crossed lovers is given a uniquely Mexican twist in writer-director Isaac Cherem’s debut film. Ariela\, an independently-minded young artist living with her Syrian-Jewish family in a cloistered Jewish neighborhood in Mexico City\, finds herself torn between her family and a forbidden romance with a non-Jewish writer\, who shows her a world of possibilities beyond her sheltered life. As their feelings deepen\, Ariela must negotiate the labyrinth of familial pressure\, religious values and traditions\, and her own burgeoning sentiment\, finding that there are no easy choices to be made. Bridging the divide between generations and cultures\, the film blends romantic comedy with an incisive feminist journey of discovery and self-determination. \n2018; Isaac Cherem; Spanish with English subtitles; 95 minutes; not rated (mature content advisory). \nThe Jewish Community Center’s 6th Annual ABQ Jewish Film Fest features six recently released film premieres\, weaving a colorful tapestry of uniquely Jewish stories that come from around the world.
