SUMMARY:Festival Flamenco Alburquerque: Compañía Manuel Liñán\, ¡VIVA!
DESCRIPTION:8 pm \nFestival Flamenco Alburquerque presents Compañía Manuel Liñán in ¡VIVA!\, a song to the freedom of movement\, where the feminine essence is embraced through the masculine body\, where gender roles\, in a codified world like that of flamenco\, are broken with joy and enjoyment\, creating new terrains that\, although unexplored\, are not distant…. \n!VIVA! celebrates movement through the character of the female dancer. In a celebratory key\, Liñán proposes the plurality of the dance\, the different forms\, and the singularity of each form. And he does it with six bailaores-bailarines\, who are in charge of exploring and diving into this fascinating universe of the feminine\, seen from the masculine\, thus exposing these two identities which are both part of our own nature. \n$40\, $50\, $70\, $85 \nThank you to our Performing Arts Season Sponsors Heritage Hotels and Resorts\, the Albuquerque Journal and Southwest Airlines!

SUMMARY:Festival Flamenco Alburquerque: Compañía Olga Pericet\, La Espina
DESCRIPTION:8 pm \nFestival Flamenco Alburquerque presents Compañía Olga Pericet in La Espina que Quiso Ser Flor o La Flor que Soñó la Bailaora. From award-winning dancer Olga Pericet\, Espina encompasses a personal journey through dance that comes from memory\, wounds\, past kisses\, and time\, where the real and the oneiric melt in a single space-time: the interior. Espina’s language delves into the roots of the unknown; sows new things; creates a universe where feminine and masculine\, humorous and dramatic fit in equal parts; and encounters human lights and shadows. A gallery of dramatic games where the woman always appears powerful\, a miscellany of sculpted images\, where space is traversed\, between beauty and ugliness\, joy and bitterness\, seclusion and sensuality\, youth and decrepitude\, all framed in a future of rhythms that move in a palo flamenco and its opposite. \n$40\, $50\, $70\, $85 \nThank you to our Performing Arts Season Sponsors Heritage Hotels and Resorts\, the Albuquerque Journal and Southwest Airlines!

SUMMARY:Film: Zoot Suit
DESCRIPTION:7 pm \nIn Zoot Suit\, Luis Valdez weaves a story involving the real-life events of the Sleepy Lagoon murder trial and the subsequent\, racially fueled Zoot Suit Riots throughout Los Angeles.  The trial followed the death of José Díaz\, found unconscious near the “Sleepy Lagoon” reservoir in 1942\, and resulted in the conviction\, despite insufficient evidence\, of several young Latinos charged with complicity in his murder. The fears and hostilities aroused by its coverage pitted servicemen stationed in Southern California\, along with white civilians\, against Mexican American and other minority youths. The white antagonists attacked and stripped teenagers and youths who wore zoot suits\, with their long jackets and pegged pants\, ostensibly because they considered the outfits\, which utilized a considerable amount of fabric\, unpatriotic during a time when rationing of fabric was required for the war effort.  Set in the barrios of Los Angeles\, the film features music by Daniel Valdez and Lalo Guerrero\, the “father of Chicano music.” El Pachuco\, an idealized Zoot Suiter\, serves as narrator as well as the conscience of Henry Reyna\, a character inspired by real-life defendant Hank Leyvas. The convictions obtained as a result of the murder trial were reversed on appeal in 1944. Presented as part of the Bank of America Free Thursday Film Series. \n1981; Luis Valdez; English; 103 minutes; rated R. \nFree ticketed event; tickets available one hour before show

SUMMARY:Film: El Apóstol
DESCRIPTION:7 pm \nAn escaped convict follows the Camino de Santiago in an attempt to recover the stolen jewels hidden years ago by a fellow inmate in the remote\, wooded Galician village of Xanaz. There\, he encounters sinister old men\, strange disappearances\, spirits\, a peculiar priest\, and even the archbishop of Santiago de Compostela in this tale full of fantasy\, terror\, and humor. SUMMARY:Kala Anjali (Rental)
DESCRIPTION:6 pm \nNatyakalanjali Academy of Dance and Music presents Kala Anjali\, an evening of East Indian dance\, music\, and martial arts. Nataykalanjali believes strongly in using the arts and deep-rooted culture of India for the betterment of today’s world. All profits from the show will be donated to the victims of the Kerala floods in Southern India\, who have lost their homes in these floods. \nThis presentation seeks to create a cross-cultural conversation between the Indian classical arts and New Mexican viewers\, making art forms accessible to different audiences around the world. Bharatanatyam (an Indian classical dance form) and Indian classical music are versatile and complete idioms\, capable of telling stories. The Indian martial arts are said to be one of the most ancient arts of warfare. Natyakalanjali considers it to be an honor to be able to share these artistic experiences for a cause.\n$25 w/ $5 discount for students \n \nKerala\, the southernmost tip of India\, receives approximately 2\,000 millimeters of rainfall annually. At the end of 2018\, Kerala received 2\,350 millimeters of rain in just two weeks. As a result\, two main rivers\, the Periyar and the Pamba\, were flooded and 22 dams had to be opened to avoid damage to the structures. This led to landslides and flooding in 13 of the 14 districts in Kerala. Nearly 21\,747 miles of roads\, an estimated 174\,000 houses\, and 218 bridges need to be rebuilt. Crops of around 46\,000 hectares have been destroyed\, and the total flood loss has been estimated to be $5.6 billion USD. Kala Anjali hopes to add a drop of assistance to this ocean of need in its humble way \nNatyakalanjali is an organization for the arts of India—Bharatanatyam\, including Carnatic music and allied classical and contemporary forms\, with a holistic focus on education\, performance\, and community outreach. Natyakalanjali is also a premiere academy of Bharathanatyam (Indian dance) and Carnatic (South Indian vocal music) in Albuquerque\, with branches in Little Rock\, AR and Trivandrum\, India. Natyakalanjali focuses on traditional ways of imparting Indian arts. \nKala Anjali’s vision and mission stem from two principles: first\, every artist is a sensitive respondent to experiences within and around him/her\, and second\, ambient and holistic exposure to excellence in the arts must be offered as a benefit to the world.
