SUMMARY:Opera Southwest Presents Rossini's Il Turco in Italia
DESCRIPTION:April 3\, 6\, 8 & 10\, 2016\n 2pm Sundays\n 7:30pm Wednesday & Friday \nIn the second New Mexico premiere of our 43rd season\, Opera Southwest returns to our popular and critically acclaimed exploration of the music of Rossini\, with his delightfully zany Il Turco in Italia (The Turk in Italy)-a fully staged opera with orchestra\, sung in Italian with English translation supertitles and presented in two acts with one intermission.\nFiorilla\, the unsatisfied and coquettish wife of the exquisitely boring Don Geronio\, meets the dashing Turk Selim-so she decides to fall in love. No one is more upset about this than her current lover\, Narciso! \nLater\, at a masked ball\, tremendous confusion (and hilarity) ensues\, as Selim ends up with his old flame Zaida while Fiorilla is cast out by Geronio. But\, under the watchful eye of Prosdocimo the poet\, all find forgiveness before the curtain comes down. Maestro Anthony Barrese conducts.\nOpera Southwest Website\n$15\, $25\, $35\, $53\, $63\, $73\, $80\, $85\nDiscounts for groups and patrons 30 and younger

SUMMARY:Siembra\, Latino Theatre Season: Yo Soy Joaquín!
DESCRIPTION:7:30 pm—Thursday-Saturday\n 2 pm—Sunday\nAn epic poem by Rodolfo “Corky” Gonzales famously associated with the Chicano movement of the 1960s\, Yo Soy Joaquín! is presented by Patricio Tlacaelel Trujillo y Fuentes in the form of a play. Joaquín speaks of the struggles the Chicano people have faced in trying to achieve economic justice and equal rights in the U.S.\, as well as in establishing their own identity.\n$18 w/ $3 discount for students\, seniors\, & NHCC members; $10 Thursday shows only \n \nFirst published in 1967\, the work is often referenced by writers\, researchers\, and historians as a pinnacle in the evolution of Chicano culture and literature\, and has been described as “the forerunner of the Chicano cultural renaissance.” It is often used in the classroom in teaching Chicano history\, as Gonzales captures the history of “La Raza Cósmica” (the late Mexican philosopher José Vasconcelos’ “cosmic\,” or new\, race) from the Aztec empire through contemporary Chicano culture. \nFor Trujillo y Fuentes\, who grew up in the 1960s in Pueblo\, Colorado\, and has known the poem since he was nine years old\, Yo Soy Joaquín! is his blood\, his heartbeat\, and his way of life. He remembers the Brown Berets marching in parades\, the dismissal from school on September 16th so that students could take place in the many public festivities celebrating Mexican independence\, and the pride he felt in seeing folkloric dancers\, mariachis\, and boxing matches in the parks. Yo Soy Joaquín! reflects his upbringing. He still cherishes its words\, and hopes that audiences will enjoy the theatrical revival of this great poem.

SUMMARY:Chispa: Orchestra of New Spain\, Iphigenia en Tracia\, A Zarzuela
DESCRIPTION:3 pm \nIphigenia en Tracia\, based on Euripedes’ Iphigenia in Tauris\, was written in 1747 by José de Nebra\, known as the leading late-Baroque composer of Spanish opera and zarzuela\, with libretto by Nicolás González Martínez. Nebra’s ultimate\, highly dramatic zarzuela is a tragicomic version of the legendary story\, set near the ancient city of Troy and presented with all the panoply\, splendor\, dance\, and humor it would have enjoyed when it opened in Madrid’s newly rebuilt Corral de la Cruz. With brilliant arias\, Baroque Spanish dance\, and sumptuous sets and costumes\, this rarely seen work features Carla López Speziale\, Eugenia Ramírez\, Anna Fredericka Popova\, and Leslie Hochman. Music director and conductor\, Grover Wilkins 3rd; stage director\, Gustavo Tambascio; set designer\, Nicolás Boni; costume designer\, Antonio Bartolo; choreographer\, Jaime Puente. Spanish and English with supertitles.\n$17\, $22\, $27\, $32 with $5 discount for students\, seniors\, and NHCC members \n \nThe Dallas-based Orchestra of New Spain comprises over 40 instrumentalists and singers specializing in early Spanish and American Hispanic music. Its principal repertory is drawn from manuscripts found in court\, public\, and cathedral archives of Spain. Taking its name from the area of present-day Texas and Mexico originally called New Spain by Spanish explorers\, it seeks to present music from “old” Spain in this “new” land.
