Tickets will be available at the event one hour prior to the performance. \n \nDirector’s Note: It could be argued that Shakespeare’s Comedy of Errors has no socially redeeming value.  A very young William Shakespeare cobbled together his own take on several ancient Roman comedies – zapped it with a modern sensibility – wrote in better jokes – added more plot twists – and included a dash of his growing romantic brilliance – and voilà.  It’s all that and it is more. It is filled with mad-dash playful action interrupted by stand-up routines – mistaken identities and their hilarious consequences – melodramatic longing and joyous reunions. \nAt its heart\, is a play about the exuberance of youth. The Comedy of Errors does not shed new light on the human condition or plumb the depths of the human psyche. It throws a brilliant and playful spotlight on the simple follies of humble humans. It is a play about us.  How nice of Shakespeare to send us this giggling love letter 400 years ago. Tickets will be available at the event one hour prior to the performance. \n \nDirector’s Note: ​If Samhain or Halloween is the night\, where the veils between the living and the dead are thin\, in many cultures\, Midsummer is the night that the Faeries come out and play\, the night when you dance around the bonfire in the forest\, only to realize you are not dancing alone and when you open your eyes the next morning\, you’re not sure if what you experienced was real or simply a vision. \nThis performance is set in the magical moment between waking and sleeping – the slow surfacing from the depths of your dreamscape – the liminal space on the threshold of beginning. In order to have a beginning you need to have a before-time. It’s here where we find our Midsummer. The Italians have a word for this before-time: Dormiveglia\, the space that stretches between sleeping and waking. Not many people know this\, but it is in this place that the Faeries rule. Everything is possible in the moments you dwell here; the sweet\, the sad\, the irreverent and the ridiculous. If you know me\, you know I prefer the ridiculous over just about anything. \nLast year when I took on As You Like It\, I coined it the “Party Show” of the Festival. This year is something a little different. This year we are THE HEART show. I invite you to let yourself sink here in this moment in the no-time. The possibility of using the experiences and personal testimonies of real people who do not appear in the image but are generated from an original use of materials and cinematographic techniques\, achieves an enormous visual and didactic impact\, one of the most effective resources in an animated documentary like this one. LGTBIQ+ Animation \nThrough a work with archival photographs\, the animator Alejandra Bueno creates a reinterpretation of the presence of women in Basque culture\, which combines the manipulation and intervention of these images with the oral enumeration of the functions traditionally attributed to women. The result is a provocative display of how to assume and reverse the elements of tradition and its representation to show its fissures and to open those meanings that are no longer viable or sustainable. Almost half of these volunteer teachers were under eighteen years old\, and more than half were women. \nFree Community Event \n \nNarrated by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Alice Walker\, MAESTRA explores the experiences of nine of the women who\, as young girls\, helped eradicate Cuban illiteracy within one year. Interweaving interviews\, archival footage\, and campaign photos\, this lively documentary includes one of the first Cubans of her generation to call herself a feminist and one of the first openly proud members of Cuba’s LGBTQI community. With wit and spirit\, all recall negotiating for autonomy and independence in a culture still bound by patriarchal structures. Light hors d’oeuvres and one drink will be included Cash Bar Available. \nCecilia López\, a talented Mexican-American opera soprano known as “The Daughter of Idaho\,” was born in Rupert\, Idaho but currently lives in Albuquerque\, New Mexico. Ms. López’s musical career began when she was a little child and began singing mariachi songs that her mother had taught her. She received the coveted Idaho State Concurrent Resolution honoring her life as an Idahoan and her achievements in the operatic world. \n$75.00 for Non-members\, $50.00 for NHCC Foundation Members \n \nIn addition to being named one of opera’s “25 Rising Stars” by Opera News\, she has been designated one of “Idaho’s Top 10 Most Influential Women of the Century” by USA Today. Her “alluring voice and incredible range” (Washington Post) are frequently praised for the singing actress. \nMs. López has displayed remarkable perseverance and adaptation in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic’s hurdles. She has taken part in virtual and live recitals with prominent opera companies during the 2020–2021 season\, including Opera Idaho\, Opera Las Vegas\, Austin Opera\, Opera Southwest\, Chatter ABQ\, and Madison Opera. Notably\, she performed with the Pacific Symphony for the first time\, mesmerizing audiences as Violetta in their 90-minute La traviata rendition.\n​\nMs. López was named Opera Idaho’s first Artistic Advisor in January 2021. All three current members\, Mike Marvin\, Tim Gorelangton and Buddy Woodward\, have intrinsic links to and experience with the original group: Mike is the adopted son of founding member Nick Reynolds\, who was also his musical mentor; Tim\, a close friend since boyhood\, is one of the few musicians outside the Trio who has recorded with Nick Reynolds; and Buddy\, who has performed with longtime Kingston Trio member George Grove. \nMany of their personal memories recall the iconic trio’s performances and journey as folk music made its extraordinary ascent to the pinnacle of popular culture – and the top of the music charts. SUMMARY:Teatro Paraguas: United in Blood: The Revolutionary Music and Poetry of Chile
DESCRIPTION:7:30 pm Friday & Saturday\n3:00 pm Sunday \nTeatro Paraguas and the NHCC present United in Blood: The Revolutionary Music and Poetry of Chile. United in Blood is a fully staged performance celebrating the artistic\, social\, and political vision of four of Chile’s most beloved musicians and poets: Pablo Neruda\, Victor Jara\, Violeta Parra\, and Gabriela Mistral. Though not all four knew each other\, several of them did\, and they are all intimately connected through their shared passions\, political sensibilities\, and deep concern for humanity. \nSongs and poems will be performed in the original Spanish\, with English translations either performed or projected above the stage. \n$27 w/ discounts for students\, seniors and NHCC members \n \nGabriela Mistral\, who in 1945 became the first Latin American to win the Nobel Prize in Literature\, had a personal and lifelong influence on Pablo Neruda\, who won the Nobel Prize himself in 1971 and is widely considered one of the greatest poets of the 20th century. Violeta Parra\, an amazingly versatile musician and visual artist\, reinvented Chilean folk music in the 1950s and 60s and\, similar to Mistral with Neruda\, had a profound influence on Victor Jara. Jara became known internationally in the 60s and 70s as a folk singer and songwriter and\, together with his friend Neruda\, was one of the main Chilean artist-activists associated with the election in 1970 of the socialist president Salvador Allende. \nIn addition to celebrating these artists\, United in Blood specifically commemorates the 50th anniversary of the September 11th\, 1973\, coup d’etat that ended Allende’s short presidency and resulted in Augusto Pinochet’s nearly 20-year military dictatorship\, as well as the deaths of thousands of dissidents\, Victor Jara and Pablo Neruda among them. \nThrough song\, poetry\, dance\, and instrumental music (including charango\, guitar and flute)\, the production explores roots\, love and loss\, the essential role of art and free expression in society and takes an impassioned stance against fascism and indifference in our time\, honoring Jara’s example that we must never stop working for our “right to live in peace.” \nThe ensemble includes Cristina Vigil\, Jeni Tincher\, Jojo Sena de Tarnoff\, Miranda Arteaga\, Monica Arteaga\, Paola Vengoechea Martini\, Roxanne Tapia\, Argos MacCallum\, Jonathan Harrell\, James Stake\, and Mario Reynolds on Charango (traditional Andean stringed instrument).
