SUMMARY:Art Museum Reception: Into the Hourglass: Paño Arte from the Rudy Padilla Collection.
DESCRIPTION:5:00 pm – 7:30 pm \nJoin us for the opening reception of Into the Hourglass: Paño Arte from the Rudy Padilla Collection. \nInto the Hourglass: Paño Arte from the Rudy Padilla Collection is an exhibition celebrating paños as an art form and the contributions of incarcerated artists to the broader fields of Chicano and American art. The exhibition features over 100 paños or pañuelos (Spanish for cloth or handkerchief) amassed by the late collector and community advocate\, Rudy Padilla\, as well as artworks by New Mexican artists whose work has been influenced by the style and visual vocabulary of paño arte. \nThe Rudy Padilla Paño Collection was acquired by the Art Museum at the National Hispanic Cultural Center in 2019 and is the largest public collection of its kind in the United States. The artworks and archive are significant resources for understanding and celebrating an important form of artistic and cultural expression created by incarcerated (and formerly incarcerated) artists from Chicano and Latino Communities across the Southwest U.S. The exhibition\, co-curated by Jadira Gurulé (NHCC Head Curator and Visual Arts Program Manager) and Rebecca Gomez (NHCC Curator)\, explores the interconnectedness of paño arte and Chicano and American art\, honors the social and cultural legacy of Padilla’s work\, and examines the topic of incarceration in contemporary society. \nFree community event.

SUMMARY:Art Museum Reception: Paño Connections - Corazon Knows No Bounds
DESCRIPTION:5:00pm – 7:00pm \nJoin us for a free public reception to celebrate the opening of Paño Connections – Corazon Knows No Bounds. \nThe Art Museum at the National Hispanic Cultural Center (NHCC) is honored to host the exhibition Paño Connections organized by artist and guest curator Eric “Christo” Martinez.  On display in the Community Gallery\, which is dedicated to showcasing art by New Mexican artists\, this exhibit explores artworks inspired by paños (drawings on handkerchiefs) and other artworks created by incarcerated artists. This is the second iteration of this exhibit\, and Martinez’s goal is to expand connections among those who are passionate about this body of work. \nFeatured Artists: \nAdan Hernandez \, “Big Dave” Griego\, Carlos Contreras\, Carlos “Gordo” Vigil\, Chuey Armenta\, Crystalynn Maestas\, David C. Luna\, Eric Christo Martinez\, Eric Javier Martinez\, Eric Martinez\, Gerald Lovato\, Jeremy Hovey\, Jesse Casias\, Jimmy Santiago Baca\, Joey Nelson\, Keith Coughenhour\, Kevin Herrera Mauldin\, Leticia Luna\, Merrick Morton\, Phillip “Oso” Barrios\, Taylor Hackford \nAdditionally\, Paños Connections builds upon The Rudy Padilla Paño Project at the NHCC Art Museum.  The Rudy Padilla Paño Project includes a collection of art and paños by incarcerated and formerly incarcerated artists that was amassed by the late collector and community advocate\, Rudy Padilla\, his archive\, a traveling exhibit\, and catalogue.  This collaboration with Martinez builds upon the dialogue that honors the longstanding and ever-evolving artistic traditions born inside and expanding beyond the United States prison system.

SUMMARY:Happy Arte Hour
DESCRIPTION:6:00 pm to 8:00 pm \nNHCC invites adults for artistic fun in a relaxed social setting. This is a great opportunity for friends to hang out\, a unique date night option\, or a place to come solo and connect with fellow art enthusiasts. Drinks and snacks will be available to purchase. \nDuring this month’s Happy Arte Hour we will create mixed media collage with artist Micaela Seidel. Micaela is a multi-media artist who has worked throughout New Mexico for over 20 years as a teacher\, curator and community arts organizer. She has worked on giant puppets\, masks\, costumes\, and floats for several parades. \nHer countless workshops have included gelli-printing\, hat-making\, kites\, cardboard structures\, alebrijes\, and wire and cloth figures\, among others. Since retiring she focusses on the book arts and collage. She hopes to always infuse others with a passion toward curiosity and self-expression. \nPlease pre-register below (so we know how many materials to prepare). Registration for the following month is available the day after the current program month. For more information\, please call or email Elena Baca at 505-246-2261 or elenad.baca@dca.nm.gov. \nFree Community Event. $5+ donations are encouraged to support the artists & purchase supplies.

SUMMARY:Art Museum Reception: Convergence x Crossroads: Street Art from the Southwest
DESCRIPTION:5:00 pm – 7:00 pm \nConvergence x Crossroads: Street Art from the Southwest is an exhibition in the Art Museum at the National Hispanic Cultural Center that showcases the vibrancy and ingenuity of the street art scenes in New Mexico\, Texas\, Arizona\, California\, and Northern Mexico presenting artworks by artists who identify as Chicano/a/x\, Latino/a/x\, Indigenous\, and Native American. The artists whose work is featured in the exhibition use the street as their medium to create graffiti and/or murals.  On the street\, their work is widely accessible to passersby\, yet also ephemeral. The artists often know the cityscape intimately and their art is a significant marker of place. \nFree Community Event\, generously supported by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. \n \nThe exhibition depicts a cultural convergence of differing styles of street art from across the Southwestern United States and Northern Mexico including graffiti and murals. The exhibit will provide a unique opportunity for the NHCC to collaborate with artists and community members in new ways as we strive to illuminate the significance of this artform at home and throughout the Southwest. The exhibit will feature over 25 artists from across the Southwestern United States and Northern Mexico and open dialogue around street art from this era.
