SUMMARY:Writing Workshop: Fiction (All Genres)
DESCRIPTION:6 pm\, Wednesdays (eight weeks between January 16 and March 6) \nDo you love reading good fiction—whether historical\, popular\, literary or sci-fi? Have you always wanted to write stories or novels? This eight week workshop is designed for writers who want to try writing fiction or those who need inspiration (and skills) to write more.  Inspired by fiction by Latinx writers\, you will write new work\, develop your narrative skills and receive valuable feedback for revision from your fellow writers. The workshop culminates with a public reading of your new work at the NHCC. \nInstructor:  Brenna Gomez is adjunct faculty at the University of New Mexico (UNM) where she teaches composition\, creative writing\, and in the freshmen learning community program. She received her MFA in fiction from UNM in 2016 and served as Editor in Chief of UNM’s national literary magazine\, Blue Mesa Review. Her fiction has appeared in Prairie Schooner and is forthcoming in StoryQuarterly. Brenna was the recipient of a 2017 Hedgebrook residency and the 2015 Hispanic writer award for the UNM Summer Writers’ Conference in Santa Fe. SUMMARY:Voces Summer Institute: Accepting Applications
DESCRIPTION:Voces is a FREE month-long summer writing institute for teens (ages 15-18) presented each summer by the National Hispanic Cultural Center. Teens spend 4 WEEKS IN JUNE writing\, creating art\, writing\, learning from guest artists\, writing\,  sharing\, writing\, collaborating\, writing\, and reading/performing for peers and the public at two celebratory events. The program runs each weekend day in June from 9:30 am- 4 pm with a free lunch included. SUMMARY:Inside Opera:  María de Buenos Aires
DESCRIPTION:5:30-7 pm\nNHCC Library\, History and Literary Arts Building \nOpera novices and aficionados are invited to three free interactive presentations about  “María de Buenos Aires\,” Astor Piazzolla’s extraordinary tango-opera. Over three Wednesday evenings\, poet Valerie Martínez and conductor Oliver Prezant will lead you on a magical journey through the story\, the libretto\, the music\, and the staging of this evocative work\, which tells the story of María\, a prostitute born in a poor suburb of Buenos Aires\, who sleepwalks through life\, death\, the afterlife\, and is reborn into “innocence.” The music\, by tango legend Ástor Piazzolla\, is based on “nuevo tango\,” a genre that Piazzolla revolutionized by infusing Argentine tango with elements of jazz and classical music. Those who attend all three sessions will receive a 50% discount on tickets to a performance of the show\, which runs from February 17-24 in the Journal Theater. \nDates and Topics: \nJanuary 23: Story\, Text\, and Context\, with Valerie Martínez \n\n Maria’s Argentina: old tango bars\, duende\, crafting the libretto\, signs and symbols\, magical realism.\n\nJanuary 30: The Music\, with Oliver Prezant \n\nAstor Piazzola and Tango Nuevo\, singing the story-setting the text\, the music of character and situation.\n\nFebruary 6: Maria on Stage – “Operita” or Opera? with Oliver Prezant \n\nDirector’s choice: blocking\, lighting\, sets\, costumes. Maria in the land of musical theater and opera.\n\nRegister for the workshops HERE. \nValerie Martínez is currently the Director of History and Literary Arts at the National Hispanic Cultural Center. Santa Fe’s second Poet Laureate\, Valerie taught poetry and literature at the college/university level for 23 years. As a core artist and Executive Director of Littleglobe\, Valerie worked in collaboration with the Santa Fe Opera Community Engagement Program to co-create two community-based operas: Memorylines: Voces de Nuestras Jornadas (2008) and the Santa Fe Bus Opera (2010). \nOliver Prezant has presented lectures and education programs for The Santa Fe Opera and Opera Southwest. He is the Music Director and conductor of the Santa Fe Community Orchestra\, and the Artistic Advisor to the ArtWorks Program\, which provides arts education workshops for Santa Fe Public Schools students and teachers. He was on the faculty of the Contemporary Music Program at the College of Santa Fe and Santa Fe University of Art and Design.
