Please arrive early to ensure that your ticket is not released to the waiting list. \n6:00 PM: Reception & Book-signing in the Performing Arts Lobby\n7:00 PM: Keynote Speech \nAs a reporter who was the first Latina in many newsrooms\, Maria Hinojosa dreamt of a space where she could create independent\, multimedia journalism that explores and gives a critical voice to the diverse American experience. She made that dream a reality in 2010 when she created Futuro Media\, an independent\, nonprofit newsroom based in Harlem\, NYC with the mission to create multimedia content from a POC perspective. \nPlease join us for a special evening celebrating International Woman’s Day when Hinojosa will share her experiences and discuss the importance of sharing our stories as Hispanics and Latinos. Ms. Hinojosa will sign copies of her book at the reception preceding her lecture. \nFree Community Event. SUMMARY:Alicia Gaspar de Alba: Writing Workshop
DESCRIPTION:10:00 am \nAs part of the NHCC’s El Arte de la Palabra series\, award-winning author Alicia Gaspar de Alba will host a writing workshop\, titled The Mariposa Hour: Oral Storytelling. This oral storytelling workshop is based on techniques from The Moth\, which Gaspar de Alba teaches in her bilingual creative writing class\, The Mariposa Hour. \nFree Community Event\, generously supported by AARP New Mexico. Please register here or call the NHCC Welcome Center at 505-724-4771 for assistance. \n \n     \n \nAlicia Gaspar De Alba is a Professor of Chicana/o and Central American studies\, English\, and gender studies at UCLA\, where she has worked since 1994. She has published 12 books\, including novels\, collections of fiction and poetry\, and academic books. Her 13th book is coming out later this spring. She has won several awards for her writing\, including the Lambda Literary Foundation Award for Best Lesbian Mystery in 2005 for Desert Blood\, which also won the Latino Book Award for Best Mystery in English in 2006 and Best Mystery in Spanish in 2009. Her first novel\, Sor Juana’s Second Dream\, won the Latino Hall of Fame Award for Best Historical Novel in 2000. Her forthcoming book\, Crimes of the Tongue: Essays and Stories\, will be published by Arte Publico Press.

DESCRIPTION:9:30 am on the 4th Tuesday of each month \nOur Colcha community Workshop is open to all levels of experience in an informal setting. This workshop is instructed by Annette Gutierrez-Turk. Annette has taught this art form to groups internationally and at the NHCC for many years. She is also an award-winning artist\, most recently recognized in 2019 at Santa Fe Spanish Market. Annette will demonstrate as well as answer questions. We hope you will join us every month on the fourth Tuesday\, on zoom or in person.
