SUMMARY:23rd Annual César Chávez Day
DESCRIPTION:10:30 am – Marcha\n 12 pm – Fiesta \nJoin the 23rd annual César Chávez Day celebration\, with a march beginning at 10:30 am and ending at noon at the National Hispanic Cultural Center’s Plaza Mayor.  Following the march\, the family fiesta at the Center includes poetry\, dancing\, community awards and exhibits\, children’s activities\, food\, a keynote speech by Carlos Marentes\, and live music by Las Cafeteras. \nCarlos Marentes has dedicated his life to improving the lives of farmworkers in New Mexico and Texas\, creating the organization Sin Fronteras in 1989 and subsequently opening the Border Farm Workers Center in El Paso. Las Cafeteras\, immigrant children from the streets of Los Angeles\, came together in 2008 to document the histories of their neighborhoods through music. The group fuses the Afro-Caribbean roots and vibrant energy of son jarocho with an edgy East Los Angeles alternative sound and a community-based political message\, creating a new urban folk sound and telling the stories of everyday people who are looking for love and fighting for justice.

SUMMARY:Lecture & Booksigning: Heribert von Feilitzsch\, The Road to Columbus
DESCRIPTION:6 pm \nMexican Revolution and diplomatic history scholar Heriberto von Feilitzsch presents a lecture tracing the events that led to Pancho Villa’s attack on New Mexico one hundred years ago—on March 9\, 1916. He will be signing his book Felix A. Sommerfeld and the Mexican Front in the Great War following the lecture. \nVon Feilitzsch grew up in Germany\, only yards from the East German border—the “Iron Curtain.” In 1988 he came to the United States as a student. Fascinated with the Mexican-American border\, he pursued a master’s degree in Latin American history\, with a focus on the Mexican Revolution\, at the University of Arizona. While pursuing a business career in later years and receiving an MBA from Wake Forest University\, he remained committed to writing about the border. After twenty years of painstaking original research in the U.S.\, Mexico\, and Germany\, he published four scholarly books on the German secret service and the Mexican Revolution. He now lives on a farm in Northern Virginia with his wife and children.\nFree public event

SUMMARY:Film: La piedra ausente
DESCRIPTION:7 pm \nThis documentary by Sandra Rozental and Jesse Lerner explores the present-day relevance of relics from the past. It relates the story of the journey of the colossal stone statue (23 feet high and 168 tons) of a pre-Hispanic rain deity\, thought to be Tlaloc\, from the village of San Miguel Coatlinchán\, where it had lain for centuries in a dry riverbed\, to its present location in front of Mexico City’s Museo Nacional de Antropología e Historia. The removal of the statue caused a rebellion in the village and a subsequent intervention by the army. Today\, it stands in its urban setting as one of the principal icons of national identity. Presented in partnership with the Mexican Consulate in Albuquerque. \nSpanish with English subtitles; 82 minutes; not rated.\nFree ticketed event; tickets available one hour before show

With brilliant arias\, Baroque Spanish dance\, and sumptuous sets and costumes\, this rarely seen work features Carla López Speziale\, Eugenia Ramírez\, Anna Fredericka Popova\, and Leslie Hochman. Music director and conductor\, Grover Wilkins 3rd; stage director\, Gustavo Tambascio; set designer\, Nicolás Boni; costume designer\, Antonio Bartolo; choreographer\, Jaime Puente.
