Aliento: State Street Ballet’s Carmen

6 pm Mexican Revolution and diplomatic history scholar Heriberto von Feilitzsch presents a lecture tracing the events that led to Pancho Villa’s attack on New Mexico one hundred years ago—on March 9, 1916. He will be signing his book Felix A. Sommerfeld and the Mexican Front in the Great War following the lecture. Von Feilitzsch grew up in Germany, only yards from the East German border—the “Iron Curtain.” In 1988 he came to the United States as a student. Salud y Sabor: Bolivia

5:30 pm to 7:30 pm Salud y Sabor, a partnership between the Agri-cultura Network, Street Food Institute, and the NHCC, is a free evening of food, art, and entertainment aimed at providing families with an opportunity to connect around nutrition, cooking, healthy lifestyles, and culture. Once a month, community members gather for cooking demonstrations using fresh, locally grown ingredients, as well as fun art activities for kids and adults, health screenings, and live entertainment. 7 pm A career retrospective of the Broadway legend  who created iconic roles including Anita in West Side Story, Rosie in Bye Bye Birdie, and Velma in Chicago, featuring interviews, archival performance footage, and newly filmed songs from Rivera’s concert repertoire. A two-time Tony Award winner and the recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2009, Chita Rivera was also the first Hispanic woman to receive a Kennedy Center Honors Award. Chispa: Latin Diva Series, Vanessa Zamora

7:30 pm Born in Tijuana, Baja California to parents who were both pianists, acoustic folk-pop singer/songwriter Vanessa Zamora became interested in the performing arts as a child. She began piano lessons at the age of eight, and continued a year later with guitar and drums. While a student at the Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara, she began uploading videos covering favorite songs by various artists on YouTube and social networking sites. 7:30 pm A star in contemporary world music, jazz, flamenco, and fusion, Buika is one of the most sought-after performers on the world stage today.  Born to African parents in Mallorca, Spain, she is often compared to Nina Simone, Chavela Vargas, and Cesaria Evora.  Her recordings have received multiple awards, including several Latin Grammys, and her 2013 release, La noche más larga, was nominated for a Grammy for Best Latin Jazz Album. 7 pm Filmmaker Carlos Saura returns to his bitter childhood memories of the Spanish Civil War in this 1990 film. Carmela, her husband Paulino, and their assistant Gustavete are traveling entertainers, touring the countryside to perform before Republican troops. When they are arrested in Franco-controlled territory, a theatre-loving Italian Fascist commander attempts to bargain with them to stage a burlesque of the Republic in exchange for their freedom. 23rd Annual César Chávez Day

10:30 am - Marcha 12 pm – Fiesta Join the 23rd annual César Chávez Day celebration, with a march beginning at 10:30 am and ending at noon at the National Hispanic Cultural Center’s Plaza Mayor.  Following the march, the family fiesta at the Center includes poetry, dancing, community awards and exhibits, children’s activities, food, a keynote speech by Carlos Marentes, and live music by Las Cafeteras.
