SUMMARY:AMP Concerts Presents Rhiannon Giddens (Rental)
DESCRIPTION:7:30 pm \nSinger-songwriter Rhiannon Giddens is the co-founder of the Grammy award-winning string band Carolina Chocolate Drops\, in which she also plays banjo and fiddle. She began gaining recognition as a solo artist when she stole the show at the T Bone Burnett–produced Another Day\, Another Time concert at New York City’s Town Hall in 2013. The elegant bearing\, prodigious voice\, and fierce spirit that brought the audience to its feet that night is also abundantly evident on Giddens’ critically acclaimed solo debut\, the Grammy-nominated album Tomorrow Is My Turn\, which masterfully blends American musical genres like gospel\, jazz\, blues\, and country\, showcasing her extraordinary emotional range and dazzling vocal prowess.\n$27\, $32\, $37 \n \nGiddens’ follow-up album\, Freedom Highway\, was released in February 2017. It includes nine original songs Giddens wrote or co-wrote\, along with a traditional song and two civil rights era songs\, “Birmingham Sunday\,” and the Staple Singers’ well-known “Freedom Highway\,” from which the album takes its name. \nGiddens’ recent televised performances include The Late Show\, Austin City Limits\, Later…with Jools Holland\, and both CBS Saturday and Sunday Morning\, among numerous other notable media appearances. She performed for President Obama and the First Lady on a White House Tribute to Gospel\, along with Aretha Franklin and Emmylou Harris; the program was televised on PBS. Giddens duets with country superstar Eric Church on his powerful anti-racism song “Kill a Word\,” which is currently top 15 on country radio; the two have performed the song on The Tonight Show and the CMA Awards\, among other programs. When she enters the church\, the Santo Niño and the saints come to life\, and Julianita is whisked off into an evening of mystery\, magic\, and miracles. \nThis joyous piece by the Santa Fe Opera depicts the important role of the Santo Niño de Atocha as part of the traditional cultural fabric of northern New Mexico in both Hispanic and Native American families. The tale of Julianita and the Santo Niño\, passed down from generation to generation\, is adapted from the charming children’s story by Peggy Pond Church. SUMMARY:Domingos en Arte: Son Como Son
DESCRIPTION:7:30 pm \nSon Como Son bills itself as “Salsa\, Cuban Style.” Founded in 1993\, it is unquestionably one of Albuquerque’s longest-standing and most popular salsa ensembles. They play regularly to packed audiences comprising highly animated and dedicated salseros at the NM Jazz Workshop’s Salsa Under the Stars series; at the Cooperage; and at special concerts\, such as those at the Telluride Jazz Festival. They are directed by renowned trombonist\, vocalist\, percussionist\, composer\, and arranger César Bauvallet\, who moved from Havana\, Cuba to Albuquerque in 1992. \nDomingos en Arte\, a summer music and dance series presented by Melaza Music\, AMP Concerts\, and the National Hispanic Cultural Center is a family-friendly summer event on Sundays in NHCC’s charming Fountain Courtyard that features live music\, drinks\, and delicious Latin cuisine. The NHCC’s newest on-campus restaurant—La Fonda del Bosque—will be offering unique themed dinners before each concert and providing a cash bar and tapas throughout the night. \n$11 in Advance\, $14 Day of Show \n \n\nDomingos en Arte is part of New Mexico Culture Squared (NMC2)\, a NM Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA) project to build and manage partnerships between DCA institutions and cultural organizations that will enhance the impact\, effectiveness\, attendance\, and visitor experience of exhibits and programs of DCA entities. Under the management of AMP Concerts\, NMC2 will create programs in collaboration with State Historic Sites\, DCA Museums and various cultural organizations with the goal of increasing public programs statewide and promoting New Mexico as a destination for arts and culture.\nThis is a rain or shine event.

DESCRIPTION:9 am to 8 pm \nThe National Hispanic Cultural Center will present a beginning-to-end reading of Rudolfo Anaya’s acclaimed novel\, Bless Me\, Ultima. The reading will take place in the NHCC Art Museum where an exhibition\, La Ultima Exhibición\, enters its final month. Over 40 dignitaries\, New Mexico authors\, youth\, adults and elders (including school students) will read\, each for 15 minutes\, between 9 am and 8 pm. The general public is invited to attend any part of the day-long reading as well as tour the exhibition before it concludes on November 11. \nThe reading is free and open to the public with museum entrance fee. \nSome notable readers include the following. DESCRIPTION:10 am – 5 pm\nDomenici Education Building\, Room 122/124 \nWhen you are often the only person who identifies the way you do\, entering a room can be extremely uncomfortable. Now imagine that a joke is then made on your behalf. Poking fun at your natural hair\, or teasing your personality characteristics because they reject the stereotype associated with your group affiliation. “Not being black enough\,” “Acting white\,” or having your native language skills criticized by friends and family are often commonplace. These statements or questions are often a way to challenge our belonging or even our presence in certain spaces. This can happen at school\, work or even at the grocery store. Learn how to work through these situations and what to say when microaggressions appear.\n$40 Early Bird Registration\, $80 Groups of 3 & $60 Late Registration\n(fees not included in the price of the registration) \nVal Day-Sanchez and Carli Romero present a 1 day training on handling these dangerous comments in our daily lives. Using Val’s hit book\, The Only Black Girl in the Room as the basis of the curriculum\, Val creates a safe space to learn how to talk about difficult topics like race\, implicit bias\, sexism\, and gender identity. Carli will focus on our bodies. How do we center ourselves and our breath when we are triggered by microaggressions. \nThrough a series of activities\, and discussions\, participants will leave with options when they are the target of a microaggression from family or friends. We’ve all been caught off guard when certain comments are made. When do we say something? When can we say something? And more importantly\, when we speak\, how can we ensure we are heard?\nSchedule \n10 am Introductions: We are all entering this workshop from different places in our lives and in our understanding. That doesn’t mean we should judge. \n10:15 am What Is A Microaggression?: It doesn’t matter if it was a joke\, or your intention was to provide support\, if someone leaves the interaction feeling offended or unsafe\, clearly your intention was not aligned with your impact\, now what? Perhaps you are singled out because of your sexual orientation? You go home to visit and feel anxious and bombarded by the off the cuff comments that are made\, asking why you aren’t married? Or perhaps at a company mixer your coworkers begin debasing your friends because of their race or religion? You want to say something but you’re worried about offending your family\, being alienated at work\, or ostracizing your friends\, what are your next steps? \n11 am White Fragility\, Relationship Dynamics & Trauma: What are the barriers keeping us silent? Who is speaking? Do we feel safe? Do we have power? All of this can effect how we respond to this poisonous statements. We all have biases\, some we are aware of while others just seem natural. We’ve never examined them before. How do microaggressions reintroduce us to our past trauma? What’s the harm in stereotypes and assumptions and why does it seem like white people seem more surprised by this than people of color? Well\, that phenomenon actually has a name\, “White Fragility.” \n12 pm-1 pm Microaggressions and Recovery: The tightening of our chest\, sweaty palms\, shortness of breath\, this is often how our bodies respond to microaggressions. Learn coping mechanisms to help with this process. Shame\, grief\, anger\, guilt can come up when speaking to microaggressions on either side of the instances\, how do we deal with that? Well\, it starts with sending love to our past self. We are talking about the reality that our beliefs drive our behaviors. Now from a mindfulness/therapeutic/recovery perspective – growth requires an ongoing examination of beliefs\, and that is intricately connected to our racial/gendered conditioning. Let’s learn how to recognize and shift our beliefs which are grounded in biases. \n1 pm-2 pm Lunch Break: Off Campus \n2 pm-3 pm How Can we Respond to Microaggressions?: Let’s work through case studies. If it was a friend or an acquaintance versus the family matriarch? What about your employer or someone you work with? This family-friendly event\, also featuring drinks and delicious Latin cuisine\, will be held in the NHCC’s enchanting Fountain Courtyard. \n$12 w/ $2 discount for NHCC members; free for children 12 and younger \n \nSon Como Son bills itself as “Salsa\, Cuban Style.” Founded in 1993\, it is unquestionably one of Albuquerque’s longest-standing and most popular salsa ensembles. The band has played regularly to packed audiences of dedicated and enthusiastic salseros at the NM Jazz Workshop’s Salsa Under the Stars series; at the Cooperage; and at special concerts in venues such as the Telluride Jazz Festival. Son Como Son is directed by renowned trombonist\, vocalist\, percussionist\, composer\, and arranger César Bauvallet\, who moved from Havana\, Cuba to Albuquerque in 1992. \nIvón Ulibarrí & Café Mocha\, also one of Albuquerque’s oldest and hottest salsa bands\, serves up a blend of son\, cha-cha\, merengue\, cumbia\, and other styles from the Caribbean and beyond. An award-winning vocalist and songwriter and a pioneer of salsa music in New Mexico\, Ivón has been entertaining for over 30 years.

DESCRIPTION:2 pm – 4 pm \nPlease join Theresa Cárdenas as she discusses climate change and how it has become one of the most significant and fastest growing threats to people and their cultural heritage worldwide. In particular\, Cárdenas will talk about the historic impact of climate change on cultural heritage in New Mexico. The impacts of climate change are damaging infrastructure\, ecosystems\, and social systems that provide essential benefits and quality of life to communities. What does this mean for our lands and peoples of New Mexico? Is New Mexico prepared to face the unprecedented\, systemic threat to people and their cultural heritage? Creating bridges and cooperation between experts and decision makers involved in the sectors of heritage\, culture\, and climate science is important to inspire and stimulate new approaches to taking climate action. \nThis is a FREE event OPEN TO THE PUBLIC. \n \nTheresa Cárdenas is a sustainability practitioner\, working as a consultant at the intersection of public policy\, environmental and social justice challenges. She writes\, “I have a simple mission; working to meet today’s needs without jeopardizing the ability of future generations to meet their needs”. Theresa became passionate about the built environment and sustainability 20 years ago as co-owner of a home building company in Albuquerque\, NM\, and that passion lead her to create Noble Renewables Group of the West; a social enterprise advocating for environmental and social change by providing strategic guidance to organizations. She worked in partnership with the Union of Concerned Scientists\, to help advance clean energy policies in a legislative\, regulatory and advisory setting and the current Chair of the Middle Rio Grande Water Advocates. She holds a Bachelors of University Studies degree from the University of New Mexico\, Albuquerque\, NM. and graduate of Harvard University\, John F. Kennedy School of Government\, Executive Education in Leadership\, Organizing and Action. She is a fellow of the National Hispana Leadership Institute. Later\, however\, the score was lost\, and it has not been heard in well over a century. DESCRIPTION:6:30 pm \nJaima Chevalier’s book Fringe is a tribute to flamenco legend María Benitez and includes almost 200 rare and exclusive images from locally famous to world-renowned photographers\, all showcasing Benítez’s central role in dance history. Beníitez is an iconic figure in American flamenco. Her riveting story begins with the complexity of her mixed Native American and Puerto Rican heritage followed by her extraordinary journey as a young woman leaving her home on the outskirts of Taos Pueblo to study flamenco in Spain. From the inherent irony of her identity as a Native American woman striving to master the art of a culture that had colonized the Southwestern United States\, she grew into an artist driven to forge her own way in the world\, starting a business\, \, a non-profit institution\, a school\, and a professional touring company. Her illustrious career\, from appearances in film and television to stages across the world\, is an inspiration to artists\, students of history\, and seekers of core human truths. Her ability to overcome both racial and gender discrimination made her equally comfortable on the Metropolitan Opera stage as well as dancing around a gypsy campfire–all coalescing to make her story one that dances straight into the heart of what it means to be an American original. \nJaima Chevalier\, a Santa Fe native\, is the author of five books including La Conquistadora: Unveiling the History of Santa Fe’s Six Hundred Year Old Religious Icon and Nativo (with Oliver Galvan-De La Cruz).
