DESCRIPTION:2 pm – 4 pm \nJoin A. Gabriel Meléndez\, recently appointed director of UNM’s Center for Regional Studies\, as he takes us on a fun and insightful journey through the life of Mexican actor Mario Moreno and his beloved character “Cantinflas.” \nMoreno starred in scores of films from the 1930s through the 1980s\, and is also known for his Golden Globe-winning role as the ingenious valet Passepartout in Around the World in 80 Days. In Latin America and beyond\, he is a beloved icon. The talk will explore the impact of Cantinflas\, a character who is closely associated with the national identity of Mexico\, but whose cultural impact reaches far and wide. \nThe La Canoa Legacy Series features talks by Hispanic/Latino academic and community researchers with long-standing and distinguished records of research and teaching about New Mexico and the region. Like la canoa—referring in New Mexican Spanish to several utilitarian objects used to receive and transport people and resources and thus provide a service to the community—these talks are meant to serve the community by presenting new or overlooked information about our region to interested audiences. We want them to transport us to new understandings of our region and its rich cultural and historical inheritance\, and to move the conversation back and forth in rich dialogue between presenters and audience members.\nFree event\, open to the public.

DESCRIPTION:March—11 am\n Fiesta—12 pm \nJoin the 24th annual César Chávez Day celebration\, with a march—La Marcha de Justicia—beginning at 10:30 am at the Dolores Huerta Gateway Park\, picking up additional participants at the National Hispanic Cultural Center at 11:00 am\, and ending at noon on the NHCC’s Plaza Mayor. Following the march\, the family fiesta at the Center includes poetry\, dancing\, community exhibits\, children’s activities and games\, food\, a keynote speech by Dolores Huerta\, and live music. Additionally\, the 2017 César Chávez and Dolores Huerta ¡Sí Se Puede! awards will be presented to people who have served the community in the spirit of the United Farm Workers leaders. \nDolores Huerta\, a native of Dawson\, New Mexico\, was co-founder\, with César Chávez\, of the United Farm Workers Union. In 2012\, Huerta was recognized for her decades of\nceaseless civil rights and labor organizing when Barack Obama granted her the Presidential Medal of Freedom Award\, the greatest civilian honor in the United States. Huerta’s appearance at this event coincides with Bernalillo County’s renaming of Gateway Park in the South Valley as Dolores Huerta Gateway Park\, and follows on the heels of the world premiere of the movie Dolores\, a documentary on Huerta’s life\, at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival. \nShuttle service and ribbon cutting \nBefore the march begins\, there will be a ribbon cutting ceremony and a keynote address by Dolores Huerta at the park beginning at  9:30 am. Parking is limited at the park so shuttles will pick up participants at the NHCC education building from 8:30-9:30 am. DESCRIPTION:The National Hispanic Cultural Center is taking on a project\, supported by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation\, with the goal of giving value and meaning to the lived stories of our New Mexico community; bringing heightened awareness of racial divides and inequalities; and helping navigate ways to heal and move forward together through art. \n \nOur overarching plan is to facilitate community dialogues and then commission artists to share these stories through devised works\, presented in meaningful and discussion-inducing ways. The works created from stories told by the community would include theatre\, music\, dance\, visual arts\, circus arts\, poetry\, literary arts\, film\, mixed media and more—all with the intention and aim of validating community experiences and making them accessible and audible for an audience not otherwise engaged in race equity issues. The project will run from 2018-2019\, with 2017 serving as our planning year. \nAs part of the planning process\, we are gathering a list of people who might want to join us in the project\, in varying capacities. DESCRIPTION:8:30 am – 7 pm—Thursday & Friday\n8:30 am – 4 pm—Saturday \nThe University of New Mexico is hosting an interdisciplinary environmental justice public forum\, “Decolonizing Nature: Resistance\, Resilience\, Revitalization\,” which includes a four-day interdisciplinary conference from April 19 through April 22 at the NHCC; a companion exhibition at 516 ARTS from April 15 through April 29; a film screening at the UNM Art Museum on April 18; and a community event\, “Abrazos: A Community Celebration of Environmental Justice\,” at the Valle de Oro National Wildlife Refuge\, organized by conference partners Friends of the Valle de Oro National Wildlife Refuge and the Los Jardines Institute\, on Earth Day\, April 22. \nAll events are free and open to the public\, but registration is required. The program and registration information are available on the conference website: http://decolonizingnature.unm.edu. \n \nThe colonization of nature under capitalism is rooted in an ethos that views human beings as separate to and above nature—Earthmasters for whom the Planet is an inexhaustible reservoir of natural resources to be exploited. With profit as the prime motive\, the resources are denuded beyond sustainable limits for the disproportionate benefit of a wealthy few. Pollution and waste from this activity also is skewed in its impact\, in this case to the substantial detriment of poor and marginalized people\, indigenous communities\, and biotic life. Capital’s colonization of nature has brought us to our current moment of grave ecological peril—climate change\, Sixth Extinction\, and other human-caused environmental crises that cumulatively and rapidly degrade Earth’s life-sustaining ecological fabric. \nDecolonizing nature has thus become an urgent priority if we are to progress toward a just and sustainable Earth for all living beings. How do we resist further ecological devastation? How do we achieve resilience in times of stress? How do we revitalize affected ecological habitats and communities? The UNM forum will address these and related issues. \nThe conference features 33 speakers from the fields of art\, architecture\, humanities\, religion and science\, and grassroots activists from across the US as well as Mexico\, Canada and Ecuador. It is designed to foster discussions on integration of knowledge across disciplines\, practices across cultures\, and social-environmental movements across geographies. \nThe conference and the associated programming are sponsored by the Land Arts of the American West and Art & Ecology programs in the Department of Art at the University of New Mexico\, in partnership with the National Hispanic Cultural Center\, 516 ARTS\, Friends of the Valle de Oro National Wildlife Refuge\, Los Jardines Institute\, and the Santa Fe Art Institute. Gabriel Meléndez for a reading from his new book The Book of Archives and Other Stories from the Mora Valley\, New Mexico. \nThe Book of Archives tells the story of New Mexico’s Mora Valley\, located in the shadow of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains\, through the ghosts of history it harbors: troubadours and soldiers\, Plains Indians and settlers\, families fleeing and finding home. There\, more than a century ago\, villagers collect scraps of paper documenting the valley’s history and their identity—military records\, travelers’ diaries\, newspaper articles\, poetry\, and more—and bind them into a leather portfolio known as “The Book of Archives.” When a bomb blast during the Mexican-American War scatters the book’s contents to the wind\, the memory of the accounts lives on instead in the minds of Mora residents. Poets and storytellers pass down the valley’s traditions into the twentieth century\, from one generation to the next.\nFree public event \n \nA. Gabriel Meléndez is a Professor of American Studies at the University of New Mexico\, the recently appointed Director of UNM’s Center for Regional Studies\, and the author of several books\, including Spanish-Language Newspapers in New Mexico\, 1834–1958 and Hidden Chicano Cinema: Film Dramas in the Borderlands. A native of Mora with el don de la palabra\, the divine gift of words\, Meléndez mines historical sources and his own imagination to reconstruct the valley’s story\, first in English and then in Spanish\, stringing together humorous\, tragic\, and quotidian vignettes about historical events and unlikely occurrences to create a vivid portrait of Mora\, both in cultural memory and in present reality.

His political writing and openly gay lifestyle eventually led to imprisonment by the Castro regime\, failed attempts to leave the country\, and his final departure from Cuba in the 1980 Mariel boatlift. Arenas died in Manhattan in 1990. DESCRIPTION:8 pm \nFestival Chispa\, a celebration of New Latin music in partnership with Avokado Artists\, presents Latin Grammy award-winning singer-songwriter Gaby Moreno and the incredible L.A.-based Latin alternative band Las Cafeteras. \nBorn and raised in Guatemala\, singer/songwriter Gaby Moreno was captivated in her youth by the sounds of the blues\, soul\, and jazz\, and now calls Los Angeles home. Mixing English and Spanish vocals in elegant harmonies\, she was awarded the Latin Grammy for Best New Artist in 2013. Her albums include Still the Unknown (2008)\, Illustrated Songs (2011)\, Postales (2012)\, Posada (2014). and Ilusión (2016)\, nominated for a Grammy for Best Latin Pop Album. She sings the theme song for Disney’s animated television series Elena of Avalor\, and is featured on the soundtrack for the 2017 film How to Be a Latin Lover\, starring Selma Hayek\, Eugenio Derbez\, and Rob Lowe. Ilusión goes back to Moreno’s beginnings\, capturing the pure spirit of an aspiring immigrant artist who made her way in a new country with just her guitar\, her extraordinary voice\, and the songs she was eager to share. The bilingual refrain of the track “Fronteras” (“Borders”) embodies the essence of the album and the artist’s confident state of mind when she created it: “Y río y bailo. Está en mis venas. Y libre sueño. This is where I belong.” (“And I laugh and dance. It’s in my blood. And I dream free. This is where I belong.”) \nLas Cafeteras fuse the Afro-Caribbean roots and vibrant energy of traditional son jarocho with an edgy East Los Angeles alternative sound and a community-based political message\, creating a new urban folk sound in both English and Spanish. The product and reflection of a diverse\, hard-working\, politically active neighborhood\, they use their music to tell stories about the streets where they were raised\, the communities they live in today and their dreams for the world they hope to see in the future. Their eclectic instrumentation includes jarana\, requinto\, quijada (a donkey’s jawbone)\, marimbol (a West African bass instrument)\, cajón\, tarima (the wooden platform traditionally used to dance zapateado)\, and Native American drum and flute. Their second studio album\, Tastes Like L.A.\, features songs of activism and celebration and includes an updated version of their song “If I Was President.” Blending Mexican folk traditions with hip hop flavors and political discourse\, this bilingual song serves as a perfect summation of what the band is about.
