SUMMARY:Fantasía Fantástica: Imaginative Spaces and Other-Worldly Collage
DESCRIPTION:Art Museum hours and prices HERE \nFantasía Fantástica: Imaginative Spaces and Other-Worldly Collage features the fantastical creations of four artists whose works toy with space and expand the parameters of collage. The artists\, Nick Abdalla\, Cynthia Cook\, Carlos Quinto Kemm\, and Rachel Muldez\, collect objects and images that populate the day-to-day but often go unnoticed. They then reframe them as part of a new imaginative whole. The works in this exhibition offer opportunities to contemplate how fantasy and the imaginary inform daily life as well as the historical and contemporary climate of Hispanic and Latina/o art more broadly. \nSpace and scale are key components in each artist’s work. Each artist interacts with space both by changing the setting that encompasses their work\, as well as by creating a new world within the object. From delicate and intimate scenes to sizable\, yet graceful sculptures\, the magic is in the details as much as it permeates the broader environment created by the artworks.

A native New Mexican and daughter of laborers\, Mari-Luci Jaramillo grew from a studious child in La Vegas\, NM to become a teacher\, a leader in education reform\, a national advocate for civil rights\, and the first Latina Ambassador of the United States to Honduras. \nThis archival collection of correspondence\, speeches\, articles\, photographs\, and artifacts highlights her family history\, early adulthood\, and extensive career in higher education and government. It reflects the central beliefs of Mari-Luci Jaramillo’s life and career: family and community\, pride of heritage\, and that service to others is important.

DESCRIPTION:Art Museum hours and prices HERE \n¡Aquí Estamos: The Heart of Arte! celebrates the NHCC Art Museum’s growing permanent collection with a revitalized vibe and a brand new selection of works. This exhibition was a collaborative project as the entire NHCC Visual Arts staff and interns combed through the collection and worked together to decide which pieces should welcome in 2017. This sampling explores the contributions of these artists and how each work can serve as a reminder of the heart that thrives in strong and resilient communities. \nThe collection contains over 2\,500 artworks by Hispanic\, Chicana/o\, and Latina/o\, artists from around the globe most of which have been generously donated to the museum by artists and collectors. It reflects the diversity of Latina/o art and expression in all of its vibrancy\, creativity\, pointed humor and social consciousness. The National Hispanic Cultural Center Art Museum exists to support and engage the work of these artists and share their creations and their stories with the broader community.

DESCRIPTION:March—11 am\n Fiesta—12 pm \nJoin the 24th annual César Chávez Day celebration\, with a march—La Marcha de Justicia—beginning at 10:30 am at the Dolores Huerta Gateway Park\, picking up additional participants at the National Hispanic Cultural Center at 11:00 am\, and ending at noon on the NHCC’s Plaza Mayor. Following the march\, the family fiesta at the Center includes poetry\, dancing\, community exhibits\, children’s activities and games\, food\, a keynote speech by Dolores Huerta\, and live music. Additionally\, the 2017 César Chávez and Dolores Huerta ¡Sí Se Puede! awards will be presented to people who have served the community in the spirit of the United Farm Workers leaders. \nDolores Huerta\, a native of Dawson\, New Mexico\, was co-founder\, with César Chávez\, of the United Farm Workers Union. In 2012\, Huerta was recognized for her decades of\nceaseless civil rights and labor organizing when Barack Obama granted her the Presidential Medal of Freedom Award\, the greatest civilian honor in the United States. Huerta’s appearance at this event coincides with Bernalillo County’s renaming of Gateway Park in the South Valley as Dolores Huerta Gateway Park\, and follows on the heels of the world premiere of the movie Dolores\, a documentary on Huerta’s life\, at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival. \nShuttle service and ribbon cutting \nBefore the march begins\, there will be a ribbon cutting ceremony and a keynote address by Dolores Huerta at the park beginning at  9:30 am. Parking is limited at the park so shuttles will pick up participants at the NHCC education building from 8:30-9:30 am. There will be additional shuttles after the ribbon cutting to return people who can’t participate in the march to the NHCC. \nThis is  a free public event

DESCRIPTION:2 pm to 4 pm \nJoin author Celia López-Chávez for a reading from her new book Epics of Empire and Frontier: Alonso de Ercilla and Gaspar de Villagrá as Spanish Colonial Chroniclers. \nEpics of Empire and Frontier reveals new ways of thinking about the themes of empire and frontier from the muse of the epic poems La Araucana by the Spanish nobleman Alonso de Ercilla and Historia de la Nueva México by Gaspar de Villagrá\, Mexican-born captain under Juan de Oñate in New Mexico\, both of which valorize the Spanish conquest of native peoples. Employing historical and literary analysis that goes from the global to the regional\, and from the sixteenth to the twenty-first centuries\, López-Chávez considers Ercilla and Villagrá not only as writers but as citizens and subjects of the powerful Spanish empire. \nThis is a free public event \n \nAlthough frontiers of conquest have always been central to the regional histories of the Americas\, this is the first work to approach the subject through epic poetry and the main events in the poets’ lives. López-Chávez also investigates the geographical spaces and landmarks where the conquests of Chile and New Mexico took place\, the natural landscape of each area as both the Spanish and the natives saw it\, and the characteristics of the expeditions in both regions\, with special attention to the violence of the invasions. In her discussion of law\, geography\, and frontier\, López-Chávez carries the poems’ firsthand testimony on the political\, cultural\, and social resistance of indigenous people into present-day debates about regional and national identity. \nCelia López-Chávez is a retired Associate Professor for the Honors College at the University of New Mexico and author of Con la cruz y con el dinero: Los Jesuitas del San Juan Colonial (With the Cross and with Money: Jesuits in Colonial San Juan).

SUMMARY:Call for Involvement: Our Truth Project
DESCRIPTION:The National Hispanic Cultural Center is taking on a project\, supported by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation\, with the goal of giving value and meaning to the lived stories of our New Mexico community; bringing heightened awareness of racial divides and inequalities; and helping navigate ways to heal and move forward together through art. \n \nOur overarching plan is to facilitate community dialogues and then commission artists to share these stories through devised works\, presented in meaningful and discussion-inducing ways. The works created from stories told by the community would include theatre\, music\, dance\, visual arts\, circus arts\, poetry\, literary arts\, film\, mixed media and more—all with the intention and aim of validating community experiences and making them accessible and audible for an audience not otherwise engaged in race equity issues. The project will run from 2018-2019\, with 2017 serving as our planning year. \nAs part of the planning process\, we are gathering a list of people who might want to join us in the project\, in varying capacities. DESCRIPTION:8:30 am – 7 pm—Thursday & Friday\n8:30 am – 4 pm—Saturday \nThe University of New Mexico is hosting an interdisciplinary environmental justice public forum\, “Decolonizing Nature: Resistance\, Resilience\, Revitalization\,” which includes a four-day interdisciplinary conference from April 19 through April 22 at the NHCC; a companion exhibition at 516 ARTS from April 15 through April 29; a film screening at the UNM Art Museum on April 18; and a community event\, “Abrazos: A Community Celebration of Environmental Justice\,” at the Valle de Oro National Wildlife Refuge\, organized by conference partners Friends of the Valle de Oro National Wildlife Refuge and the Los Jardines Institute\, on Earth Day\, April 22. \nAll events are free and open to the public\, but registration is required. The program and registration information are available on the conference website: http://decolonizingnature.unm.edu. \n \nThe colonization of nature under capitalism is rooted in an ethos that views human beings as separate to and above nature—Earthmasters for whom the Planet is an inexhaustible reservoir of natural resources to be exploited. With profit as the prime motive\, the resources are denuded beyond sustainable limits for the disproportionate benefit of a wealthy few. Pollution and waste from this activity also is skewed in its impact\, in this case to the substantial detriment of poor and marginalized people\, indigenous communities\, and biotic life. Capital’s colonization of nature has brought us to our current moment of grave ecological peril—climate change\, Sixth Extinction\, and other human-caused environmental crises that cumulatively and rapidly degrade Earth’s life-sustaining ecological fabric. \nDecolonizing nature has thus become an urgent priority if we are to progress toward a just and sustainable Earth for all living beings. How do we resist further ecological devastation? How do we achieve resilience in times of stress? How do we revitalize affected ecological habitats and communities? The UNM forum will address these and related issues. \nThe conference features 33 speakers from the fields of art\, architecture\, humanities\, religion and science\, and grassroots activists from across the US as well as Mexico\, Canada and Ecuador. It is designed to foster discussions on integration of knowledge across disciplines\, practices across cultures\, and social-environmental movements across geographies. \nThe conference and the associated programming are sponsored by the Land Arts of the American West and Art & Ecology programs in the Department of Art at the University of New Mexico\, in partnership with the National Hispanic Cultural Center\, 516 ARTS\, Friends of the Valle de Oro National Wildlife Refuge\, Los Jardines Institute\, and the Santa Fe Art Institute. DESCRIPTION:5:30 pm to 7:30 pm \nSalud y Sabor\, a partnership between the Agri-cultura Network\, Street Food Institute\, and the NHCC\, is a free evening of food\, art\, and entertainment aimed at providing families with an opportunity to connect around nutrition\, cooking\, healthy lifestyles\, and culture. \nOnce a month\, community members gather for cooking demonstrations using fresh\, locally grown ingredients\, as well as fun art activities for kids and adults\, health screenings\, and live entertainment. San Ysidro blesses the fields\, brings rain and discourages drought\, and assures a healthy growing season for local crops such as chile\, beans\, corn and squash. \nThe exhibition highlights contemporary and traditional depictions of this adored saint through approximately 65 art works by artists of all ages. DESCRIPTION:Art Museum hours and prices HERE \nEach spring\, New Mexico communities celebrate San Ysidro (aka San Isidro or Saint Isidore) the patron saint of farmers\, gardeners\, and workers. San Ysidro blesses the fields\, brings rain and discourages drought\, and assures a healthy growing season for local crops such as chile\, beans\, corn and squash. \nThe exhibition highlights contemporary and traditional depictions of this adored saint through approximately 65 art works by artists of all ages. New Mexican artist revere San Ysidro and a unique sense of place is reflected through these diverse interpretations of his image. \nThe NHCC is collaborating with numerous community members and organizations throughout the duration of this exhibition which runs through planting and harvesting seasons. This exhibition also will include a celebration of San Ysidro Feast Day. SUMMARY:La Canoa Legacy Talks:  Rebecca Blum Martinez\, Standing on Their Shoulders: A History of Bilingual Education in New Mexico
DESCRIPTION:2 pm to 4 pm \nJoin Rebecca Blum Martinez\, professor of bilingual and ESL education in the College of Education at the University of New Mexico\, for a talk on the history and present state of bilingual education in New Mexico. \nBlum Martinez has worked with and advocated for bilingual students and their families in New Mexico since 1975. Bilingual education has been a contentious educational reform since its inception in the late 1960s. New Mexico\, in 1969\, was one of the first states to embrace Spanish/English bilingual education. The struggle for Spanish language rights has been a constant preoccupation in the state since the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was signed in 1848. The talk will highlight the many initiatives undertaken in public education in New Mexico\, beginning in the 1960s\, to ensure children’s linguistic rights. \nThe La Canoa Legacy Series features talks by Hispanic/Latino academic and community researchers with long-standing and distinguished records of research and teaching about New Mexico and the region. Like la canoa—referring in New Mexican Spanish to several utilitarian objects used to receive and transport people and resources and thus provide a service to the community—these talks are meant to serve the community by presenting new or overlooked information about our region to interested audiences. We want them to transport us to new understandings of our region and its rich cultural and historical inheritance\, and to move the conversation back and forth in rich dialogue between presenters and audience members.\nFree public event
