Moliner’s approach was to look up words\, read newspapers\, and note words that she had heard in the street\, in an effort to create a resource that would be more comprehensive than the dictionary published by the Real Academia Española. To this end\, her dictionary\, first published in 1966-1967 and republished twice since\, contained detailed definitions\, synonyms\, expressions\, and families of words. She had just returned to performing when she agreed to a 1991 interview with filmmaker Gund; much of Chavela was filmed in that year. Despite a public persona as “the most macha of the machos\,” Vargas was still not entirely comfortable with identifying openly as a lesbian at the time of filming. She ultimately confirmed her sexual orientation in 2000 at the age of 81. Jones\, who immersed himself in fan nights\, concerts\, and hair grease to record what he found to be a complex world. Embracing teens and twentysomethings from Mexican\, Central American\, and South American backgrounds\, the Latino fan culture is a world away from Morrissey’s UK following\, though every bit as fanatical. \nThat spirit of joyousness appears as much due to cultural heritage as to these fans being a new generation of Morrissey devotees not raised on his miserablist reputation. Mexican American culture is imbued with a devotion to “oldies” from the stage\, screen\, and stereogram\, with the sounds of 1970s soul\, doo-wop\, and rockabilly long enjoying favor with immigrants to the US. It would seem that Morrissey’s similarity in stage persona to some Mexican pop stars means that he fits right in. His age and status as a Brit in exile also add weight to his popularity. The scholar/moderator for the screenings and discussions at the Center is Dr. Gabriel Sanchez\, Professor of Political Science at the University of New Mexico. The theme for Unit One\, presented on June 14\, is “The Century of Immigration.” \nEpisode 4\, “The Power and the People\,” of New York: A Documentary Film examines the great wave of immigration that began in the late 19th century\, tripled New York’s population\, and transformed the city and the nation. DESCRIPTION:4 pm \nThe latest installment of GOV-TV’s documentary film series on Albuquerque neighborhoods focuses on Barelas\, arguably the oldest settlement in the area. Interviews with former and current Bareleños bring to life the vibrant history of Barelas\, from its beginnings as a farming community on the Camino Real to its reign as the employment center of Albuquerque to a range of challenges and a sense of revival in the last few decades. The piece was produced and directed by Anthony DellaFlora for GOV-TV\, and shot and edited by Charles “Bazz” McClain. The 35-minute documentary includes interviews with 13 current and former residents of the neighborhood and includes many rare photos. The piece is part of the GOV-TV’s “Neighborhood At a Crossroads” series. Previous documentaries featured Martineztown and Alamosa. Films in the series are from countries whose artists are represented in this year’s festival. \nAlma: Arte\, Legado y Medio Ambiente/Spirit: Art\, Legacy and Environment\nThis U.S. premiere is a musical-visual journey to the remote area of La Ribeira Sacra in Galicia\, Spain\, where four musicians participated in an arts residency that allowed them to tune into the ancient forests and steep river canyons before performing before an audience in a 12th century Benedictine monastery. ALMA is a mobile residency program that facilitates experiences for artists to co-create in direct connection with nature. 2017; directed by Victor Hugo Espejo; Spanish with English subtitles; 14 minutes; not rated. \nHombre de Barro: Wapapura en el Amazonas/Man of Clay: Wapapura in the Amazon This documentary follows the Wapapura crew on a journey into the Colombian Amazon rainforest to record the debut album of Bogota-based trio Hombre de Barro. These three musicians\, who have all played prominent roles in other Colombian bands\, are leaders in the movement to research\, promote\, and re-engage ancient musical styles from the Americas. Films in the series are from countries whose artists are represented in this year’s festival. \nLatcho Drom\, meaning “Safe Journey\,” is a visual depiction and historical record of Romany life\, told through musicians and dancers of India\, Egypt\, Turkey\, Romania\, Hungary\, Slovakia\, France\, and Spain. The journey moves from India to Spain\, dramatizing the nomadic nature of Romany culture and the variety of conditions in which the Romany people live\, and takes place over a year’s time\, from summer through fall and winter to spring. Via song and dance\, young and old celebrate essential cultural values that have developed over countless generations and in diverse countries. DESCRIPTION:7 pm \nHumanity on the Move\, from Show of Force Productions\, tells the stories of those displaced by war\, violence\, and natural disasters who are seeking refuge and a new place to call home. The series\, which includes two short documentaries about refugees from Central America\, was aired on World Channel on September 16\, to coincide with the beginning of Hispanic Heritage Month. \nIn Los Comandos\, a teenage emergency responder faces one of the most difficult choices of her life. El Salvador\, as the result of extreme gang and police violence\, has the highest murder rate in the world. Sixteen-year-old Mimi\, growing up in this war zone\, finds refuge in a group of volunteer paramedics called the Comandos de Salvamento—one of the few institutions that is willing to take a stand against the reign of terror\, and a place of refuge and community for the young people who are disproportionately targeted. As we enter their world\, we witness the daily battles of asylum seekers on the run\, making the best of each day\, meeting new friends\, and living in a constant state of fear.
