SUMMARY:Film:  Is It Really So Strange?
DESCRIPTION:7 pm \nBurgeoning since Morrissey moved to LA\, the Latino fan scene is the subject of Is It Really So Strange?\, a documentary film by William E. Jones\, who immersed himself in fan nights\, concerts\, and hair grease to record what he found to be a complex world. Embracing teens and twentysomethings from Mexican\, Central American\, and South American backgrounds\, the Latino fan culture is a world away from Morrissey’s UK following\, though every bit as fanatical. \nThat spirit of joyousness appears as much due to cultural heritage as to these fans being a new generation of Morrissey devotees not raised on his miserablist reputation. Mexican American culture is imbued with a devotion to “oldies” from the stage\, screen\, and stereogram\, with the sounds of 1970s soul\, doo-wop\, and rockabilly long enjoying favor with immigrants to the US. It would seem that Morrissey’s similarity in stage persona to some Mexican pop stars means that he fits right in. His age and status as a Brit in exile also add weight to his popularity. The theme for Unit One\, presented on June 14\, is “The Century of Immigration.” \nEpisode 4\, “The Power and the People\,” of New York: A Documentary Film examines the great wave of immigration that began in the late 19th century\, tripled New York’s population\, and transformed the city and the nation. SUMMARY:Domingos en Arte: Lone Piñon and Lenore Armijo
DESCRIPTION:7:30 pm \nLone Piñon is an acoustic conjunto from Northern New Mexico whose music celebrates the diversity and integrity of their region’s cultural roots. Using violins\, accordion\, quinta huapangera\, bajo sexto\, guitarrón\, tololoche and vocals in Spanish\, English\, Nahuatl\, and P’urépecha\, the group has revived and updated the Chicano string band style that once flourished in New Mexico\, bringing a devoted musicianship to Northern New Mexican polkas and chotes\, virtuosic Mexican huapango and son calentano\, and classic borderlands conjunto. \nGrowing up in New Mexico\, Lenore Armijo was exposed to a unique blend of music including jazz\, ranchera and classical. Her own style has propelled her career onto various stages around New Mexico\, and more recently in films such as “Descansos” and “Letters to Our Daughters.” Her recent appearances on stage include the live New Mexico Tour of “Bless Me Ultima\,” written by Rudolfo Anaya\, and “Living Purgatory\,” written by Patricia Crespin. \nDomingos en Arte\, a summer music and dance series presented by Melaza Music\, AMP Concerts\, and the National Hispanic Cultural Center is a family-friendly summer event on Sundays in NHCC’s charming Fountain Courtyard that features live music\, drinks\, and delicious Latin cuisine. Israel\, a former chemical engineer\, his wife Ngozi and their two children have waited for resettlement for years in a refugee camp in Benin. They share their hopes and humorously acknowledge their exaggerated expectations of new life in America. In their first weeks in low-income housing in Chicago\, they are grateful for a dry place to sleep and their first McDonald’s hamburgers\, but find much of their new world confusing. Both parents struggle with low-paying jobs in the hotel industry\, and the expectations of their family in Nigeria to send money home regularly. We watch as their attempts to adapt and succeed crumble at times into despair\, but also share with them moments of hope as they struggle to attain their American Dream. SUMMARY:Film and Discussion: Barelas: Neighborhood at a Crossroad
DESCRIPTION:4 pm \nThe latest installment of GOV-TV’s documentary film series on Albuquerque neighborhoods focuses on Barelas\, arguably the oldest settlement in the area. Interviews with former and current Bareleños bring to life the vibrant history of Barelas\, from its beginnings as a farming community on the Camino Real to its reign as the employment center of Albuquerque to a range of challenges and a sense of revival in the last few decades. The piece was produced and directed by Anthony DellaFlora for GOV-TV\, and shot and edited by Charles “Bazz” McClain. The 35-minute documentary includes interviews with 13 current and former residents of the neighborhood and includes many rare photos. The piece is part of the GOV-TV’s “Neighborhood At a Crossroads” series. Previous documentaries featured Martineztown and Alamosa. The theme for Unit Six\, presented on August 23\, is “Immigration and Popular Culture.” \nAs much an immigration history as a culinary detective story\, this ebullient documentary uses the ubiquitous Americanized dish\, General Tso’s Chicken\, as a lens onto a larger story of immigration\, adaptation\, and innovation to American popular culture. Early on\, the film poses the question\, “If Chinese Americans comprise only 1% of the U.S. population\, why are there Chinese restaurants in almost every city across America?” The filmmakers seek the answer in a journey through the Chinese American experience from the Gold Rush and the building of the railroads to the age of Panda Express. DESCRIPTION:2 pm \nPlease join us and author Dave Gutierrez for a presentation of his book Patriots from the Barrio. \n \nMr. Gutierrez will relate the true story of Company E 141st Infantry\, the only all Mexican American U.S. Army unit in WWII. In September of 2017\, Hollywood actor/producer Wilmer Valderrama obtained the film rights to the book. \nDave Gutierrez is a professional researcher\, historical presenter\, and writer. His articles have appeared in publications including American Legion and War History Online. Recognized by both the Texas Military Forces Museum in Austin and the El Paso Museum of History for his groundbreaking work on Company E\, he also specializes in genealogical research\, Mexican American history\, and World War II studies. Dave and his family reside in San Jose\, California. \nThis event is part of the La Canoa lecture series\, presented in partnership with the UNM Center for Regional Studies. \n

SUMMARY:Film: Harvest of Loneliness: The Bracero Program
DESCRIPTION:7 pm \nThis historical documentary\, shedding light on the current debate over immigration reform and the use of “guest workers” in American agriculture\, examines what was known as the Bracero Program—a system put in place from 1942 to 1964 to recruit Mexican farm laborers for temporary work in the United States. The film features testimony from surviving braceros as well as these workers’ family members and descendants\, along with commentary from featured experts and extensive archival material. Anna Uremovich\, archivist for the NHCC’s History and Literary Arts (HLA) program\, will introduce the film and give an overview of HLA’s ongoing Braceros exhibition\, featuring black-and-white photographs of these workers taken by the photojournalist collective known as the Hermanos Mayo\, together with narratives\, video\, and artifacts that tell the story of the Bracero Program.
