SUMMARY:Festival Flamenco Alburquerque: Compañía Olga Pericet\, La Espina
DESCRIPTION:8 pm \nFestival Flamenco Alburquerque presents Compañía Olga Pericet in La Espina que Quiso Ser Flor o La Flor que Soñó la Bailaora. From award-winning dancer Olga Pericet\, Espina encompasses a personal journey through dance that comes from memory\, wounds\, past kisses\, and time\, where the real and the oneiric melt in a single space-time: the interior. Espina’s language delves into the roots of the unknown; sows new things; creates a universe where feminine and masculine\, humorous and dramatic fit in equal parts; and encounters human lights and shadows. A gallery of dramatic games where the woman always appears powerful\, a miscellany of sculpted images\, where space is traversed\, between beauty and ugliness\, joy and bitterness\, seclusion and sensuality\, youth and decrepitude\, all framed in a future of rhythms that move in a palo flamenco and its opposite. \n$40\, $50\, $70\, $85 \nThank you to our Performing Arts Season Sponsors Heritage Hotels and Resorts\, the Albuquerque Journal and Southwest Airlines!

SUMMARY:Festival Flamenco Alburquerque: Compañía Manuel Liñán\, ¡VIVA!
DESCRIPTION:8 pm \nFestival Flamenco Alburquerque presents Compañía Manuel Liñán in ¡VIVA!\, a song to the freedom of movement\, where the feminine essence is embraced through the masculine body\, where gender roles\, in a codified world like that of flamenco\, are broken with joy and enjoyment\, creating new terrains that\, although unexplored\, are not distant…. \n!VIVA! celebrates movement through the character of the female dancer. In a celebratory key\, Liñán proposes the plurality of the dance\, the different forms\, and the singularity of each form. And he does it with six bailaores-bailarines\, who are in charge of exploring and diving into this fascinating universe of the feminine\, seen from the masculine\, thus exposing these two identities which are both part of our own nature. \n$40\, $50\, $70\, $85 \nThank you to our Performing Arts Season Sponsors Heritage Hotels and Resorts\, the Albuquerque Journal and Southwest Airlines!

SUMMARY:Festival Oralidad
DESCRIPTION:Reception—6 pm\, Cayetana Romero Lobby\nIntroduction to Festival Oralidad—6:30 pm\, Wells Fargo Auditorium\nConcert\, Nacha Mendez Trio—7:30 pm\, Bank of America Theatre \nReception and festival introduction free to the public; concert tickets $17 w/ $2 discount for NHCC members\, purchase Here \nPlease note: Both the festival introduction and the concert will require either a proof of vaccination completed at least 14 days prior to the event or a negative COVID test administered by a health care professional within 72 hours of the event. Originals or photos of documents with a matching ID will be accepted. Masks are also required while inside the NHCC. \nInstituto Cervantes and the National Hispanic Cultural Center\, with the collaboration of AMP Concerts and the support of the New Mexico Humanities Council\, present the first Festival Oralidad on November 18\, 20\, and 22\, 2021. The festival combines workshops\, lectures\, panel discussions\, storytelling performances\, and musical performances connected to the oral tradition and storytelling. It was created with two essential purposes: the promotion of the oral tradition of storytelling and the establishment of a collaborative relationship among artists from New Mexico\, other parts of the United States\, Spain\, and Latin America to create new works together and contribute to the advancement of the genre. \n \nNew Mexico\, where Native American cultures\, Latin American oral tradition\, and cultural traditions such as flamenco converge\, is an ideal place for a festival focused on the oral tradition\, and Instituto Cervantes is positioned to encourage this union of cultures and promote an exchange between artists of diverse origins. Over three days\, Festival Oralidad offers academic and theoretical debate\, shares the secrets of storytellers with children\, and brings together some of the most significant musicians and storytellers in the U.S. While travel restrictions this year have limited participation to artists residing in-country\, future festivals will include colleagues from Latin America and Spain. \nA reception with wine and Spanish ham will greet festival participants on the opening evening\, followed by an introduction to the three-day event by Nasario García\, a folklorist\, writer and educator\, and one of New Mexico’s foremost experts on oral tradition. He will give a talk on the state’s cultural and linguistic roots in the spoken word\, and will discuss the importance of storytelling with Silvia Grijalba\, director of the Instituto Cervantes of Albuquerque and El Paso. The evening will conclude with a concert by the Nacha Mendez Trio \nNasario García\, professor emeritus of Spanish and Hispanic literatures\, holds a B.A. in Spanish\, an M.A. in Portuguese\, and a Ph.D. in 19th century Spanish literature. He has published more than 30 books educating both adults and children about the richness of New Mexico’s Spanish language and culture\, including Memorias de los viejos: Tales of the Rio Puerco; Abuelitos: Stories of the Rio Puerco Valley; Comadres: Hispanic Women of the Rio Puerco Valley; and Más antes: Hispanic Folklore of the Rio Puerco Valley. Dr. García has worked over the years to preserve the language and culture of northern New Mexico\, particularly his beloved Rio Puerco Valley\, where he grew up in the community of Ojo del Padre (Guadalupe). \nNacha Mendez combines storytelling\, music\, and song in a journey through her personal experience that speaks to her Latin blood\, Native American history\, and experience as an artist throughout Europe. SUMMARY:AfroMundo Festival: Screening & Panel Discussion
DESCRIPTION:7:00 pm \nThis Spanish/w English subtitles documentary explores Spain’s slave owning & slave trafficking past that links its ports to one in Vera Cruz.  It also depicts the influence of that shared slave past on Spanish and Mexican culture\, particularly on Flamenco and Son Jarocho. Panelists Carolina “Caro” Acuña-Olvera\, Rosalinda Rojas\, and Yvonne B. Hamilton Gutierrez are members of the Black Flamenco Network\, also known as FUAAD—Flamencos Unidos Africanos y Afro Descendientes. \nFree community event \nAfroMundo Festival \nShared Roots: A Celebration of Afro-Latinx Culture \nAfroMundo was born of a desire to counter alienation and marginalization by fostering civic engagement. It was therefore founded on the principles of convite—an age-old collaborative tradition that enables community members to pool their talents and scarce resources for rituals of life\, socialization and mutual support\, whether to collectively harvest each other’s fields\, erect homes\, tend to the sick\, bury the dead\, celebrate Feast Days or organize festivals\, thus strengthening communal bonds and ensuring that no one toils\, grieves or celebrates alone. \nIn the spirit of convite which takes into account that communities are wellsprings of wisdom\, talents and skills\, AfroMundo is a diverse\, multigenerational collective of tradition bearers\, storytellers\, community historians\, artists\, cultural specialists and humanities scholars with the shared goal of nurturing community through meaningful traditional as well as contemporary cultural\, artistic\, and humanities programs designed to nourish the soul\, address inequities\, spark informed dialogues\, and establish alliances to combat racism and bias. \nThis event is free and open to the public.\nIn-person attendees are encouraged to REGISTER in advance.\nCapacity for each event is LIMITED and varies according to venue.\nFor other festival activities please go to AfroMundo.org or AfroMundo Organization on Facebook.

SUMMARY:Yjastros: The American Flamenco Repertory Company: Xicano Power
DESCRIPTION:8:00 pm Friday\, 4:00 pm Saturday \nNational Institute of Flamenco & the NHCC present the Yjastros: The American Flamenco Repertory Company in Xicano Power. Xicano Power is the seasonal culmination of Yjastros’ progression and evolution. This performance made its world premiere at the 2023 Festival de Jerez\, marking the first time a company from the United States was ever invited to perform in the prestigious international festival. The current concert season marks the performance’s first appearance at the National Hispanic Cultural Center. \n$48\, $58\, $68\, $78 & $88 w/ a $5 discount for Seniors\, Students w/ Id\, Children 12 yeas old and younger and NHCC Members \n \nThis powerful display of flamenco is framed around the poet Rudolfo “Corky” González’s seminal poem “Yo Soy Joaquín.” González wrote the poem in 1967 to express the struggle of a people and the need for a Chicano movement. Here\, the poem appears to express shared identities and deepen the company’s and audiences’ interpretation of these repertory pieces. In 2004\, just five years after Yjastros: The American Flamenco Repertory Company’s inception\, Israel Galván choreographed Xicano Power on the company. \nIn titling the work\, Galván chose a name representative of the people performing. By doing so\, Galván acknowledged the importance of the people doing the art. We have chosen Xicano Power for the title of this performance\, focusing again on the interpreters and the power that shapes who they are. Chicano identity and culture permeate the land and space that this company comes from. The choreographies presented in Xicano Power showcase flamenco’s incredible expressive range: explosive\, elegant\, raw\, delightful\, complex\, beautiful; each piece as unique as its creator. \nFor more information about our friends at the National Institute of Flamenco\, please\, click Here. \nXicano Power – Yjastros group (Photo credit: Rafael Manjavacas)

SUMMARY:Cervantes Film Series: Relatos de la Resistencia: La Chana
DESCRIPTION:12:00 pm MST (available for 96 hours)\nInstituto Cervantes Vimeo Channel Here \nRelatos de la Resistencia: Buscando un lugar en el mundo \nLa Chana reveals the story of a mythical dancer who rose to stardom and then plunged into anonymity. The profound gaze of director Lucija Stojevic – who has recently returned to portraiture with her documentary Pepi Fandango (2023) – follows her protagonist to understand how the artistic vocation of a woman like her could survive and be recreated throughout her life. \nSynopsis: A self-taught dancer\, Antonia Santiago Amador\, known as la Chana\, lives a quiet life in Catalonia. Between 1960 and 1980\, she was one of the biggest stars of the flamenco world\, astonishing with her innovative\, fast-paced style and inventive use of rhythm. Peter Sellers\, with whom she appeared in The Bobo (1967)\, invited her to Hollywood. And suddenly\, at the peak of her career\, she disappeared from the scene. Decades of dancing have worn out her body. Sensual\, vulnerable\, yet seemingly invincible\, she transports us to the essence of her passion as she returns to the stage after a twenty-five-year hiatus. \nDirector/s: Lucija Stojevic | Year: 2017 | Format: Digital | Running time: Largometraje – 82 min | Genre: Documental | Country: España | Original version: español | Subtitles: inglés\, francés | portugués (de Brasil)\, italiano\, español | Rated: SC \n \nRelators de la Resistencia: Buscando un lugar en el mundo\, the strength of documentary filmmaking in Spain is a phenomenon with three decades of history. The work of the monographic festivals has been crucial to maintain its strength and validity among the public interested in the new expressive forms of cinema\, but also among those who seek in the documentary to know the perspective and experiences of others\, often very distant spatially\, temporally\, and culturally. \nIn collaboration with the DocsBarcelona festival\, this online film series that stars the month of April on our Vimeo channel brings together four documentaries that allow us to meet people whose lives are marked by adventure\, and not always in its most positive interpretation. In addition\, the direction of these works tells us about the place from where we elaborate the stories of loss\, but also those of survival and overcoming. \nPROGRAM\nApril 4: La Chana (2017)\, by Lucija Stojevic\nApril 11: Los Bilbao (2022)\, by Pedro Speroni\nApril 18: Light Falls Vertical (2022)\, by Efthymia Zymvragaki\nApril 25: Querida Sara (2021)\, by Patricia Franquesa
