SUMMARY:Film: The Way
DESCRIPTION:7 pm \nTom\, an irascible American doctor\, comes to France to deal with the tragic loss of his son. Rather than return home\, he decides to embark on the historical pilgrimage El Camino de Santiago (“The Way of Saint James”) to honor his son’s desire to finish the journey. What Tom doesn’t plan on is the profound impact this trip will have on him\, as\, through unexpected and oftentimes amusing experiences along “The Way\,” he discovers the difference between “the life we live and the life we choose.” Written and directed by Emilio Estevez and starring his father\, Martin Sheen\, The Way was filmed entirely in France and Spain along El Camino de Santiago. Presented in partnership with Instituto Cervantes as part of the Bank of America Free Thursday Film Series. \n2010; Emilio Estevez; English; 123 minutes; rated PG-13.\nFree ticketed event; tickets available one hour before show \n \nThe Camino de Santiago (“Way of St. James”) is a large network of ancient pilgrimage routes that stretch across Europe and come together at the tomb of the apostle St. James (Santiago) in Santiago de Compostela in northwest Spain. Since the beginning of the 9th century\, when the tomb was discovered\, Santiago de Compostela has been a pan-European place of peregrination. The city’s Old Town was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985\, and the European Union declared the Camino de Santiago to be the first European Cultural Itinerary in 1987. According to Catholic tradition\, completing a pilgrimage on the Camino\, some 500 miles along the major routes\, assures forgiveness of one’s sins. The walk now attracts people of all faiths and backgrounds\, and over 200\,000 contemporary pilgrims embark on the journey each year. \nThe April films\, as well as the first May film\, in the Bank of America Free Thursday Film Series\, presented in partnership with Instituto Cervantes and the Spanish Resource Center\, have been selected for their insights into different elements of the Way\, capturing the spiritual significance and the rich history of this iconic pilgrimage.

SUMMARY:Film: Zoot Suit
DESCRIPTION:7 pm \nIn Zoot Suit\, Luis Valdez weaves a story involving the real-life events of the Sleepy Lagoon murder trial and the subsequent\, racially fueled Zoot Suit Riots throughout Los Angeles.  The trial followed the death of José Díaz\, found unconscious near the “Sleepy Lagoon” reservoir in 1942\, and resulted in the conviction\, despite insufficient evidence\, of several young Latinos charged with complicity in his murder. The fears and hostilities aroused by its coverage pitted servicemen stationed in Southern California\, along with white civilians\, against Mexican American and other minority youths. The white antagonists attacked and stripped teenagers and youths who wore zoot suits\, with their long jackets and pegged pants\, ostensibly because they considered the outfits\, which utilized a considerable amount of fabric\, unpatriotic during a time when rationing of fabric was required for the war effort.  Set in the barrios of Los Angeles\, the film features music by Daniel Valdez and Lalo Guerrero\, the “father of Chicano music.” El Pachuco\, an idealized Zoot Suiter\, serves as narrator as well as the conscience of Henry Reyna\, a character inspired by real-life defendant Hank Leyvas. The convictions obtained as a result of the murder trial were reversed on appeal in 1944. Presented as part of the Bank of America Free Thursday Film Series. \n1981; Luis Valdez; English; 103 minutes; rated R. \nFree ticketed event; tickets available one hour before show

SUMMARY:Film: Embrace of the Serpent/El abrazo de la serpiente
DESCRIPTION:7 pm \nFilmed almost entirely in black and white in the Amazon jungle\, Embrace of the Serpent focuses on the relationship between an Amazonian shaman and two Western scientists over the course of 40 years\, and was inspired by the travel journals\, written decades apart\, of two explorers who traveled through the Colombian Amazon during the last century in search of a sacred and difficult-to-find psychedelic plant. In respecting spirituality of place and rules of nature handed down through centuries\, it attains\, in addition to its extraordinary visual beauty\, what has been described as “mystical higher ground.” The third film by director Ciro Guerra\, Embrace of the Serpent is the first Colombian film ever to be nominated for an Academy Award\, for Best Foreign Language Film. SUMMARY:Film: Con el viento/Facing the Wind
DESCRIPTION:7 pm \nCon el viento honors the filmmaker’s grandparents’ village\, and the disappearance of its culture with their passing\, while examining the issue of uprooting in all its complexity. After 20 years away in Buenos Aires\, Mónica\, a dancer and choreographer\, receives a call that her father is dying and must return to the remote village in Burgos\, Spain\, where she was born. When she arrives\, her father has already passed away and her mother asks her to stay and help her sell the family home. SUMMARY:Film: Leona
DESCRIPTION:7 pm \nA universal tale of star-crossed lovers is given a uniquely Mexican twist in writer-director Isaac Cherem’s debut film. Ariela\, an independently-minded young artist living with her Syrian-Jewish family in a cloistered Jewish neighborhood in Mexico City\, finds herself torn between her family and a forbidden romance with a non-Jewish writer\, who shows her a world of possibilities beyond her sheltered life. As their feelings deepen\, Ariela must negotiate the labyrinth of familial pressure\, religious values and traditions\, and her own burgeoning sentiment\, finding that there are no easy choices to be made. Bridging the divide between generations and cultures\, the film blends romantic comedy with an incisive feminist journey of discovery and self-determination. \n2018; Isaac Cherem; Spanish with English subtitles; 95 minutes; not rated (mature content advisory). \nThe Jewish Community Center’s 6th Annual ABQ Jewish Film Fest features six recently released film premieres\, weaving a colorful tapestry of uniquely Jewish stories that come from around the world. SUMMARY:Film: ¡Las Sandinistas!
DESCRIPTION:7 pm \n¡Las Sandinistas! documents a watershed moment in history\, when a group of Nicaraguan women shattered barriers to lead rebel troops in battle and reshape their country with landmark social reforms during the 1979 Sandinista Revolution and the ensuing U.S.-backed Contra War\, only to face renewed marginalization by their male peers once the wars ended. The film centers on the personal stories of Dora María Téllez\, the young medical student who became a key Sandinista general\, and four of her revolutionary allies. Now\, amid staggering levels of gender violence in Nicaragua\, these same women brave the streets once again to lead popular movements for equality and democracy. SUMMARY:Film: The Mamboniks
DESCRIPTION:2 pm \nLox and bagels meet salsa and congos in Peabody Award winner Lex Gillespie’s joyous and singular celebration of the Jewish love affair with Latin music and dance\, set in New York\, Havana\, Miami Beach\, and the Catskill Mountains. During the 1950s\, free-spirited\, mostly Jewish dancers from New York City fell head over heels for the mambo\, the hot dance from Cuba that became a worldwide sensation. Their love for Latin rhythms earned them a nickname: the “mamboniks.” Now retired\, yet still dancing in Florida\, a lovable\, somewhat zany collection of dancers from the ‘50s share a passion that age has not cooled. With colorful first-person accounts and an infectious Afro-Cuban soundtrack including Tito Puente\, Celia Cruz\, and “mambo king” Pérez Prado\, The Mamboniks explores a largely unexamined and exhilarating aspect of Jewish life and culture\, and a time when Jews\, Latinos\, and African-Americans met on the dance floor\, although America was racially segregated and anti-Semitism was commonplace. \n2018; Lex Gillespie; English; 89 minutes; not rated. \nFollowing the screening\, join us in the lobby outside the theatre to celebrate the film\, and the finale of the 6th Annual ABQ Jewish Film Fest\, with a “Cuban nosh” provided by La Fonda del Bosque and a cash bar provided by Pop Fizz. \nThe Jewish Community Center’s 6th Annual ABQ Jewish Film Fest features six recently released film premieres\, weaving a colorful tapestry of uniquely Jewish stories that come from around the world. The NHCC is partnering with the JCC on the screenings of Leona (July 20) and The Mamboniks (July 28). \nTickets are being sold by the Jewish Community Center; $10 in advance\, $12 at the door\, $55 for a full festival pass (6th Annual ABQ Jewish Film Fest)

SUMMARY:Film: A palabra xusta/La palabra justa
DESCRIPTION:7 pm \nIn August\, the Center continues its partnership with Instituto Cervantes to present films in the organization’s current Espacio femenino series. Instituto Cervantes has offered this series since 2010\, presenting contemporary work by women filmmakers and focusing on women’s concerns and issues. \nA palabra xusta is a game invented by a teacher for her students\, in which each child writes\, in one word\, what s/he has learned in that day’s class. The answers are put on the board\, and everyone chooses the best—the right word. In Miguel Piñeiro’s documentary\, 92-year-old Antía “Tita” Cal Vázquez\, who founded the Rosalía de Castro School in Vigo in 1961\, engages in a conversation with her cherished photographs and her memories. In a house where time seems to have stopped\, on a journey that crosses the boundaries of time and space\, she searches for the right words to tell us about her childhood\, her vocation\, the great love of her life—everything that shaped her as a woman and an educator. Presented in partnership with Instituto Cervantes as part of the Bank of America Free Thursday Film Series. \n2016; Miguel Piñeiro; Galician and Spanish with English subtitles; 108 minutes; not rated. \nFree ticketed event; tickets available one hour before show
