SUMMARY:Film: Harvest of Loneliness: The Bracero Program
DESCRIPTION:7 pm \nThis historical documentary\, shedding light on the current debate over immigration reform and the use of “guest workers” in American agriculture\, examines what was known as the Bracero Program—a system put in place from 1942 to 1964 to recruit Mexican farm laborers for temporary work in the United States. The film features testimony from surviving braceros as well as these workers’ family members and descendants\, along with commentary from featured experts and extensive archival material. Anna Uremovich\, archivist for the NHCC’s History and Literary Arts (HLA) program\, will introduce the film and give an overview of HLA’s ongoing Braceros exhibition\, featuring black-and-white photographs of these workers taken by the photojournalist collective known as the Hermanos Mayo\, together with narratives\, video\, and artifacts that tell the story of the Bracero Program. Now 41\, she is part of the family in some ways\, as emotional attachments—both positive and negative—attest\, but in others remains apart\, even expendable. \nWhen her employers decide that she needs help and hire an additional maid\, Raquel feels that she must fight for her place in the household. Her “guerrilla war” against a series of newcomers reaches increasingly audacious heights\, until someone quite different turns up and Raquel’s world begins\, very gently\, to expand. DESCRIPTION:7 pm \nIn Zoot Suit\, Luis Valdez weaves a story involving the real-life events of the Sleepy Lagoon murder trial and the subsequent\, racially fueled Zoot Suit Riots throughout Los Angeles.  The trial followed the death of José Díaz\, found unconscious near the “Sleepy Lagoon” reservoir in 1942\, and resulted in the conviction\, despite insufficient evidence\, of several young Latinos charged with complicity in his murder. The fears and hostilities aroused by its coverage pitted servicemen stationed in Southern California\, along with white civilians\, against Mexican American and other minority youths. The white antagonists attacked and stripped teenagers and youths who wore zoot suits\, with their long jackets and pegged pants\, ostensibly because they considered the outfits\, which utilized a considerable amount of fabric\, unpatriotic during a time when rationing of fabric was required for the war effort.  Set in the barrios of Los Angeles\, the film features music by Daniel Valdez and Lalo Guerrero\, the “father of Chicano music.” El Pachuco\, an idealized Zoot Suiter\, serves as narrator as well as the conscience of Henry Reyna\, a character inspired by real-life defendant Hank Leyvas. The convictions obtained as a result of the murder trial were reversed on appeal in 1944. International Cinema Series\, presented in partnership with ¡Globalquerque!\, New Mexico’s Fifteenth Celebration of World Music and Culture\, returning to the NHCC on September 20 & 21. Most films in the series are from countries whose artists are represented in this year’s festival. \nThirty years ago\, Andrei Simoniovich Filipov was the conductor of the illustrious Bolshoi orchestra until he was fired for using Jewish musicians. Now he works as a janitor at the Bolshoi and drinks too much. But when he intercepts an invitation for the orchestra to perform at the Chatelet Theater in Paris\, he masterminds a plan to gather together his own Bolshoi to go in their place and make a triumphant return to the music scene. Four hundred thousand have landed on the island over the past two decades; fifteen thousand have died on the way. Fire at Sea contrasts the daily life of the native islanders\, particularly the bucolic childhood of 12-year-old Samuele\, with the danger\, misery\, and death confronting the refugees who attempt to make their way across the Strait of Sicily. SUMMARY:Book Reading and Signing: Jaima Chevalier and her Book "Fringe"
DESCRIPTION:6:30 pm \nJaima Chevalier’s book Fringe is a tribute to flamenco legend María Benitez and includes almost 200 rare and exclusive images from locally famous to world-renowned photographers\, all showcasing Benítez’s central role in dance history. Beníitez is an iconic figure in American flamenco. Her riveting story begins with the complexity of her mixed Native American and Puerto Rican heritage followed by her extraordinary journey as a young woman leaving her home on the outskirts of Taos Pueblo to study flamenco in Spain. From the inherent irony of her identity as a Native American woman striving to master the art of a culture that had colonized the Southwestern United States\, she grew into an artist driven to forge her own way in the world\, starting a business\, \, a non-profit institution\, a school\, and a professional touring company. Her illustrious career\, from appearances in film and television to stages across the world\, is an inspiration to artists\, students of history\, and seekers of core human truths. Her ability to overcome both racial and gender discrimination made her equally comfortable on the Metropolitan Opera stage as well as dancing around a gypsy campfire–all coalescing to make her story one that dances straight into the heart of what it means to be an American original. \nJaima Chevalier\, a Santa Fe native\, is the author of five books including La Conquistadora: Unveiling the History of Santa Fe’s Six Hundred Year Old Religious Icon and Nativo (with Oliver Galvan-De La Cruz).
