SUMMARY:Festival Oralidad
DESCRIPTION:Reception—6 pm\, Cayetana Romero Lobby\nIntroduction to Festival Oralidad—6:30 pm\, Wells Fargo Auditorium\nConcert\, Nacha Mendez Trio—7:30 pm\, Bank of America Theatre \nReception and festival introduction free to the public; concert tickets $17 w/ $2 discount for NHCC members\, purchase Here \nPlease note: Both the festival introduction and the concert will require either a proof of vaccination completed at least 14 days prior to the event or a negative COVID test administered by a health care professional within 72 hours of the event. Originals or photos of documents with a matching ID will be accepted. Masks are also required while inside the NHCC. \nInstituto Cervantes and the National Hispanic Cultural Center\, with the collaboration of AMP Concerts and the support of the New Mexico Humanities Council\, present the first Festival Oralidad on November 18\, 20\, and 22\, 2021. The festival combines workshops\, lectures\, panel discussions\, storytelling performances\, and musical performances connected to the oral tradition and storytelling. It was created with two essential purposes: the promotion of the oral tradition of storytelling and the establishment of a collaborative relationship among artists from New Mexico\, other parts of the United States\, Spain\, and Latin America to create new works together and contribute to the advancement of the genre. \n \nNew Mexico\, where Native American cultures\, Latin American oral tradition\, and cultural traditions such as flamenco converge\, is an ideal place for a festival focused on the oral tradition\, and Instituto Cervantes is positioned to encourage this union of cultures and promote an exchange between artists of diverse origins. Over three days\, Festival Oralidad offers academic and theoretical debate\, shares the secrets of storytellers with children\, and brings together some of the most significant musicians and storytellers in the U.S. While travel restrictions this year have limited participation to artists residing in-country\, future festivals will include colleagues from Latin America and Spain. \nA reception with wine and Spanish ham will greet festival participants on the opening evening\, followed by an introduction to the three-day event by Nasario García\, a folklorist\, writer and educator\, and one of New Mexico’s foremost experts on oral tradition. He will give a talk on the state’s cultural and linguistic roots in the spoken word\, and will discuss the importance of storytelling with Silvia Grijalba\, director of the Instituto Cervantes of Albuquerque and El Paso. The evening will conclude with a concert by the Nacha Mendez Trio \nNasario García\, professor emeritus of Spanish and Hispanic literatures\, holds a B.A. in Spanish\, an M.A. in Portuguese\, and a Ph.D. in 19th century Spanish literature. He has published more than 30 books educating both adults and children about the richness of New Mexico’s Spanish language and culture\, including Memorias de los viejos: Tales of the Rio Puerco; Abuelitos: Stories of the Rio Puerco Valley; Comadres: Hispanic Women of the Rio Puerco Valley; and Más antes: Hispanic Folklore of the Rio Puerco Valley. Dr. García has worked over the years to preserve the language and culture of northern New Mexico\, particularly his beloved Rio Puerco Valley\, where he grew up in the community of Ojo del Padre (Guadalupe). \nNacha Mendez combines storytelling\, music\, and song in a journey through her personal experience that speaks to her Latin blood\, Native American history\, and experience as an artist throughout Europe. Mendez grew up in the small border town of La Union in southern New Mexico\, where she began singing and playing guitar at an early age. She learned traditional ranchera singing from her grandmother and performed in border towns near El Paso. \nShe studied classical voice and electronic music at New Mexico State University before moving to New York\, where she studied flamenco guitar with Manuel Granados of the Conservatory of Music in Barcelona\, Spain. In the early 1990s\, she was a lead singer with Robert Ashley’s opera company\, touring Europe and Japan\, and has also collaborated with celebrated composer Steve Peters. \nShe has received an award from the National Endowment for the Arts\, and has been honored by the New Mexico Committee of the National Museum of Women Artists\, voted Best Female Vocalist in Santa Fe\, New Mexico in 2009 and 2010\, and awarded Best Latin Production at the New Mexico Music Awards. \nThis concert will require either a proof of vaccination completed at least 14 days prior to the event or a negative COVID test administered by a health care professional within 72 hours of the event. Originals or photos of documents with a matching ID will be accepted. Masks are also required while inside the NHCC.

Similarly\, the opera is episodic\, and captures the most poignant moments from her life\, from her fateful traffic accident at the age of 18 to her political development and her turbulent relationships with Diego Rivera and her sister Cristina. \nRobert Xavier Rodriguez’ Frida is a fully staged opera with orchestra\, sung in Spanish with both Spanish and English translation supertitles.  Presented in two acts with one intermission. \nPresented in partnership with the National Hispanic Cultural Center\, Frida is based on the life and work of the iconic Mexican artist Frida Kahlo. \nCOVID PROTOCOLS:\nThe Opera Southwest respectfully requests visitors to wear masks during the performance.  Proof of vaccination is required for the performance.

SUMMARY:Feature Film: Backstreet to the American Dream
DESCRIPTION:1st Annual NHCC Film Symposium: The Power of Our Stories\nFeature: Backstreet to the American Dream (2021) directed by Patricia Nazario \n6:00 pm: Pre-film reception and cash bar \n7:00 pm: Film Screening Followed by Director’s Q&A  \nBackstreet to the American Dream is a modern-day look at the classic American Dream done through the quintessential 21st Century entrepreneurial endeavor – food trucks! This deep dive into the birthplace of the $2 billion dollar global industry\, Los Angeles\, profiles two trucks and juxtaposes the experiences of American entrepreneurs and Mexican immigrants. Indeed\, these are very different operations in the same city: the gourmet burger truck\, Grill ‘Em All\, is the first season winner of The Great Food Truck Race on the Food Network in 2010\, and El Pescadito\, a mariscos lonchera (seafood truck)\, that has been parking at the same swap meet in an immigrant neighborhood since 1982. \nThrough rich and vibrant stories of everyday Americans\, this powerful 90-minute feature takes the audience on a journey waved from intimate moments. You’ll consider pop culture and family traditions\, formal and informal economies\, and the unifying quest for the American Dream. Additionally\, a four-minute animated open (in English/Spanish/and the indigenous Náhuatl language)\, scored with native sounds from handmade instruments\, traces street food from South L.A. back to Ancient Mexico and reveals many Náhuatl names still used for food to this very day. \nFree Community Event. Please register here or call the NHCC Welcome Center at 505-724-4771 for assistance. \n2022 | Documentary | Spanish with English Subtitles | 71 minutes | not rated \n

DESCRIPTION:10:30 pm \nRenfield\, a solicitor\, makes a journey into Transylvania via stagecoach. He mentions his destination\, Castle Dracula\, to the locals who react with alarm. They tell him Drácula is a vampire and when he doesn’t believe them\, one insists he wear a cross. When he arrives at the Castle\, the Count bids him welcome. After drinking drugged wine\, Renfield collapses\, still wearing the cross\, and is bitten. Aboard ship\, a now-enslaved Renfield laughs maniacally below as Drácula picks off the crew one by one. When the ship reaches England\, he is the only living person found. \nFree Community Event \nDirectors: George Melford | Adult Horror | 1931 (USA) | Run time: 104 min. | Not Rated: NR | Studio: Universal Pictures \n \nDrácula meets Dr. Seward and his family at the opera. Lucía is completely fascinated by him and that night becomes his victim. Professor Van Helsing is called in\, and he recognizes the danger for what it is. He also realizes that Dr. Seward’s patient Renfield is somehow tied up in events. But soon after meeting the Doctor’s new neighbor\, Van Helsing figures out that Drácula is a vampire—based on the fact that Drácula casts no reflection in the mirror. By now\, Seward’s daughter Eva is falling under his spell. To her horror\, she feels increasingly weak and also increasingly wild—at one point attacking her fiancé Juan. With Seward’s and Harker’s help\, Van Helsing seeks to trap Drácula\, who outwits them and escapes with Eva by seizing control of a nurse’s mind. They follow Renfield into Carfax Abbey—an act which ends with Drácula killing his slave by strangulation\, and then tossing him from a tall staircase. Deep in the catacombs under Carfax\, they find Drácula asleep and Eva still alive. Van Helsing drives a stake through the vampire’s heart\, and as Eva and Harker leave\, Van Helsing prays over Renfield’s body.

SUMMARY:Opera Southwest: Bluebeard’s Castle with Doctor Atomic
DESCRIPTION:Oct. 22\, 27 & 29\n2:00 pm Sundays\n7:30 pm Friday \nEnter Bluebeard’s Castle if you dare! \nJust in time for Halloween\, Opera Southwest presents a double bill of thrills and chills! First\, join us for Bartok’s chilling one-act opera\, Bluebeard’s Castle. Then\, dive into the psychological horror story of the Doctor Atomic Symphony\, based on the Doctor Atomic opera by John Adams. This symphony tells the story of J. Robert Oppenheimer and the creation of the first successful atom bomb. \n$22\, $42\, $63\, $85\, $105 with discounts for groups of 8 or more\, anyone 30 years old and younger and Opera for All with a WIC or EBT card. \n \nFirst on the bill\, Bluebeard’s Castle\, the story of Judith\, the young new wife of the menacing Duke Bluebeard\, who unlocks the seven forbidden doors in her husband’s castle and is eventually confronted by the women he has already loved and murdered. \nThis production has us working with two senior set artists from Meow Wolf: Lance Ryan McGoldrick and David Cudney. In this symbolist opera\, each room is assigned a color. The two artists are working with the traditional themes while interpreting them using modern technology and their specialized skills. McGoldrick and Cudney have been collaborating for a decade and they’re bringing all their artistic experience to the scenic design of this production. They’re creating atmospheric effects\, sculptures\, and projections that will enhance the seven secret rooms as Judith insists on unlocking each door of her new husband’s castle. \nNext up\, the Doctor Atomic Symphony performed by the OSW opera orchestra with projections. In this atmospheric composition\, Adams presents highlights from the full opera\, with instrumental treatments of the story and themes. \n“With the incredible interest in Oppenheimer unleashed by this summer’s blockbuster movie\, Oppenheimer\, Opera Southwest decided to revisit the music of the popular new opera by John Adams\, Doctor Atomic\, by presenting the Doctor Atomic Symphony on the opening program of our 51st season\,” said Tony Zancanella\, OSW Executive Director.  “As a small & nimble company\, we are sometimes able to pivot programmatically to meet a broader cultural moment.” “There are all of these striking thematic and symbolic cross-connections between these works\, which delve deep into the psychology of their central subjects as they tackle dark and morally complex themes.” said Artistic Director Anthony Barrese. \nRun time: 2 hours 30 minutes\, including one intermission. \n*This event is a rental event\, not an NHCC production. SUMMARY:Opera Southwest: Before Night Falls

Koch \nA poet in love with the moon. \nJorge Martín-Buján’s Before Night Falls is based on the autobiography of Reinaldo Arenas (which has also been made into a major motion picture starring Javier Bardem). Reinaldo experienced childhood poverty\, joy in nature\, a stint with the guerillas\, international acclaim as a writer\, imprisonment as a political dissident (and unapologetically gay man)\, a daring escape from Cuba\, and exile in the U.S. Arenas is determined to stave off death to finish his memoir “Before Night Falls.” The book was published posthumously to great acclaim in 1993. \nThis opera will be produced with the New Mexico Gay Men’s Chorus (NMGMC). They have been an empowering voice in Albuquerque since 1981\, with their mission to reduce intolerance through musical performance. \n$22\, $42\, $63\, $85\, $105 with discounts for groups of 8 or more\, anyone 30 years old and younger and Opera for All with a WIC or EBT card. \nThe production of Before Night Falls received funding from OPERA America’s Next Stage grant. \nRunning time: 2 hours 40 minutes\, including one intermission.

SUMMARY:Power of Our Stories: Crow County: Our Right to Food Sovereignty\, Adios Amor\, & Mayors of Shiprock
DESCRIPTION:2nd Annual Film Symposium\n6:00 pm Doors\n6:30 pm Screening Crow Country: Our Right to Food Sovereignty\n7:00 pm Screening Adios Amor\n8:00 pm Screening The Mayors of Shiprock\n9:00 pm Panel Discussion & Q&A to immediately follow with Ramona Emerson\, Laurie Coyle\, Tsanavi Spoonhunter \nNHCC | Bank of America Theatre \nFree community event. \nCrow country: Our Right To Food Sovereignty is a 20-minute documentary that enlightens its audience to one tribe’s struggle to retain food security. The Crow Indian Reservation is the largest reservation in Montana\, encompassing 2.2 million acres of land. There are approximately 8\,000 Crow (Apsáalooke) tribal members who live there. In 2017\, the Crow Agency laid off 1\,000 of its 1\,300 employees due to federal government cutbacks\, ultimately straining tribal operations and leaving many families struggling to make ends meet. In 2019\, the only grocery store on the reservation burnt down\, and the owners are not planning to rebuild. For the Crow\, the federal and tribal governments are both failing its people. \nThe Crow Tribe— like most tribes— have been reliant on federal\, tribal and non profit food distribution centers. As a result\, tribal nations across the country are exploring the idea of ‘food sovereignty\,’ the inherent right of a community to identify its own food systems. Returning to traditional and nutritious foods has been shown to be an effective way to restore Native food systems and create employment. However\, restrictions on ancestral hunting grounds are preventing tribal members from providing for themselves and their families. CROW COUNTRY tells the stories of three Apsáalooke tribal members: a journalist; an elder; and a hunter\, as they try to address these issues\, and focuses on their resilience despite the hardships that they face. \nRun Time: 20 mins \nIn Adios Amor\, the discovery of lost photographs sparks the search for a hero that history forgot— Maria Moreno\, a migrant mother who sacrificed everything but her twelve kids in the passionate pursuit of justice for farmworkers. Years before Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta launched the United Farm Workers\, Maria picked up the only weapon she had—her voice—and became an outspoken leader in an era when women were relegated to the background. The first farm worker woman in America to be hired as a union organizer\, Maria’s story was silenced\, and her legacy buried—until now. \nRun Time: 58 mins \nThe Mayors of Shiprock: Every Monday in the small community of Shiprock\, New Mexico\, a group of young Navajo leaders meet to decide how they will help their community. For over seven years\, the Northern Dine Youth Committee has worked to give youth opportunities to directly make changes within their community. But while the NDYC works to make changes\, many members also consider their own futures\, commitments to family and the world outside of the Shiprock. While they love their community\, they all must consider their options both on and off the reservation. \nRun Time: 52 mins
