SUMMARY:Writing Workshop by Emma Pérez: “Emotional Truths: A Queer Chicanx Approach”
DESCRIPTION:10:00 a.m. \nJoin us for a writing workshop led by author Emma Pérez: “Emotional Truths: A Queer Chicanx Approach” \nYou have an idea for a story. How do you begin? What can you use from your own life experiences to tell your story and bring your character to life? \nIn this workshop\, we will experiment with scenes that tap into your emotional truths to write your story. Touching\, sincere honesty provides readers with feelings they may link to their own lives even if the story is unfamiliar. Much of Dr. Pérez’s work focuses on queer Chicanx characters who are not represented in fiction\, films\, and other media. In doing so\, she attempts to show love\, or greed\, or revenge that may resonate for any reader\, just as she does when she writes white cis-male characters that she doesn’t embody. By tapping into emotional truths\, writers can write stories with a diverse group of characters. In other words\, getting to the core of a character is often through a journey of truths that feel real. Let’s have fun while we write a few emotional truths together. \nFree community event. Please register here. \n \n \nDr. Pérez earned a PhD in history from the University of California\, Los Angeles. In 2017\, she joined the University of Arizona as a Research Social Scientist at the Southwest Center and a Professor in the Department of Gender and Women’s Studies. Pérez has published fiction\, essays\, and the history monograph\, The Decolonial Imaginary: Writing Chicanas into History (1999). Pérez’s first novel\, Gulf Dreams\, was published in 1996 and is considered one of the first Chicanx queer/lesbian novels in print. Her second novel\, Forgetting the Alamo\, Or\, Blood Memory (2009) earned awards including the Isherwood Writing Grant (2009). Her novel\, Electra’s Complex (2015)\, is a mystery set in a college with a history professor as protagonist. A collection of previously published essays and poems\, Queering the Border\, is forthcoming in December 2022 and Chronicle of a Shifter is forthcoming in 2023. \nGenerously supported by: United Way

SUMMARY:¡Cine Magnifico! The Last Movie (USA)
DESCRIPTION:5:00 p.m. – 6:45 p.m.- Film Screening \n6:45 p.m. Talk with journalist Fietta Jarque \nDennis Hopper’s second feature film after making his directorial debut with Easy Rider. The Last Movie (1971) was shot in Peru and edited at the artist’s home in Taos (New Mexico). \nConsciously self-reflexive and co-written by Hopper and Rebel Without a Cause screenwriter Stewart Stern. The Last Movie follows a Hollywood movie crew in the midst of making a western in a remote Peruvian village. When production wraps\, Hopper\, as the baleful stuntman Kansas\, remains\, attempting to find redemption in the isolation of Peru and the arms of a former prostitute. Meanwhile\, the local Indians have taken over the abandoned set and begun to stage a ritualistic re-enactment of the production – with Kansas as their sacrificial lamb. \n1971; 108 min; Color; English\, Rated R \nFree Community Event \nNote: Tickets for this and other Cine Magnifico showings will be available at the door one hour prior to the screening. \nAmong the most storied productions of the New Hollywood Era\, Hopper was given carte blanche by Universal for his next directorial feature after the tremendous commercial success of Easy Rider. The writer-director-star took the money and ran – literally – staging The Last Movie in Peru at farthest remove from the Hollywood machine\, with an on-screen entourage in tow that included Kris Kristofferson\, Julie Adams\, Stella Garcia\, Peter Fonda\, Dean Stockwell\, Toni Basil\, Russ Tamblyn\, Michelle Phillips and director Samuel Fuller. \nAfter the movie\, talk with the Peruvian journalist and writer based in Spain\, Fietta Jarque\, author of the book “Where Dennis Hopper lost his poncho”\, which tells the story behind The Last Movie. \nJarque began working in cultural journalism at Oiga magazine and El Observador newspaper. She has lived in Spain since 1984 and in the same year she was hired as editor of the Culture pages of the newspaper El País\, where she remained until 2013. She has published the books Entrevista con los ángeles (1995)\, co-authored with journalist Rosa Rivas; the novel Yo me perdono (1998); and the interview book Cómo piensan los artistas (2015).

SUMMARY:Feature Film: Backstreet to the American Dream
DESCRIPTION:1st Annual NHCC Film Symposium: The Power of Our Stories\nFeature: Backstreet to the American Dream (2021) directed by Patricia Nazario \n6:00 pm: Pre-film reception and cash bar \n7:00 pm: Film Screening Followed by Director’s Q&A  \nBackstreet to the American Dream is a modern-day look at the classic American Dream done through the quintessential 21st Century entrepreneurial endeavor – food trucks! This deep dive into the birthplace of the $2 billion dollar global industry\, Los Angeles\, profiles two trucks and juxtaposes the experiences of American entrepreneurs and Mexican immigrants. Indeed\, these are very different operations in the same city: the gourmet burger truck\, Grill ‘Em All\, is the first season winner of The Great Food Truck Race on the Food Network in 2010\, and El Pescadito\, a mariscos lonchera (seafood truck)\, that has been parking at the same swap meet in an immigrant neighborhood since 1982. \nThrough rich and vibrant stories of everyday Americans\, this powerful 90-minute feature takes the audience on a journey waved from intimate moments. You’ll consider pop culture and family traditions\, formal and informal economies\, and the unifying quest for the American Dream. Additionally\, a four-minute animated open (in English/Spanish/and the indigenous Náhuatl language)\, scored with native sounds from handmade instruments\, traces street food from South L.A. back to Ancient Mexico and reveals many Náhuatl names still used for food to this very day. \nFree Community Event. Please register here or call the NHCC Welcome Center at 505-724-4771 for assistance. \n2022 | Documentary | Spanish with English Subtitles | 71 minutes | not rated \n

SUMMARY:Feature Film: What We Leave Behind
DESCRIPTION:1st Annual NHCC Film Symposium: The Power of Our Stories\nFeature: What We Leave Behind (2022) directed by Iliana Sosa \n6:00 pm: Pre-film reception and cash bar \n7:00 pm: Film Screening followed by Director’s Q&A \nWhat We Leave Behind is a 2022 documentary film. It’s a portrait of director Iliana Sosa’s grandfather\, Julián Moreno\, as he starts building a house in the Mexican state of Durango. As a younger man\, Julián had spent decades living between the United States and Mexico\, first working as a bracero and later traveling by bus to visit his children and grandchildren in the Southwestern United States. In the film\, Julián revisits this past with his granddaughter as the two forge a tighter bond together. Voiceovers from the director punctuate the film and pair with imagery of the local landscape; the soundtrack features an a cappella song by the Cardencheros de Sapioriz\, who are also from Durango. \nThe film received development\, production\, and post-production support from several institutions\, including the Ford Foundation’s JustFilms\, the Sundance Institute\, the IDA\, the Austin Film Society\, the True/False & Catapult Rough Cut Retreat\, the Jacob Burns Film Center\, the Gotham Documentary Lab\, the University of Texas at Austin\, and the Ji.hlava New Visions Forum. \nFree Community Event. His 2002 breakthrough PBS special\, Music from a Painted Cave\, is unsurpassed in Native American theatrical expression. \nA former principal dancer with the New York Ballet\, Jock Soto was one of the last dancers to be personally selected by founder George Balanchine when he was barely 16. He danced featured roles in over 40 ballets\, of which more than 35 were created for him. The author of Every Step You Take and the subject of the documentary Water Flowing Together (the name of his Navajo clan)\, Soto teaches partnering and technique classes at the School of American Ballet\, where he has been a permanent member of the faculty since 1996. \nSacred Journeys IV brings together the rich and diverse culture of our state\, while providing extraordinary role models for New Mexico’s youth. \nSACRED JOURNEYS IV: The Live Performance Recording was honored to be screened in 2021 at the Red Nation International Film festival and the American Indian Film Festival.

SUMMARY:Film Screening: Boy and the World
DESCRIPTION:3:00 pm \nBrazilian artist Alê Abreu’s Academy Award-nominated masterpiece is a riotous explosion of music and color\, a breathtakingly original and vibrant cinematic experience that depicts the wonders and struggles of the modern world as seen through the eyes of a young boy. \nCuca’s cozy rural life is shattered when his father leaves for the city\, prompting him to embark on a quest to reunite his family. The young boy’s journey unfolds like a tapestry\, the animation taking on greater complexity as his small world expands. Entering civilization\, industrial landscapes are inhabited by animal-machines\, with barrios of decoupage streets and shop windows and flashing neon advertisements that illuminate the night. The story depicts a clash between village and city\, hand crafted and mechanized\, rich and poor – and throughout the tumult\, the heart and soul of the people beats on as a song. \nArrive early to attend Día de Familia: Tierra Hermosa \n2013 | Animated Feature | Portuguese (spoken backwards) | 80 minutes | not rated | Alê Abreu Director \nGenerously supported by Bank of America.
