SUMMARY:Convergence x Crossroads: Street Art from the Southwest
DESCRIPTION:Convergence x Crossroads: Street Art from the Southwest is an exhibition in the Art Museum at the National Hispanic Cultural Center that showcases the vibrancy and ingenuity of the street art scenes in New Mexico\, Texas\, Arizona\, California\, and Northern Mexico presenting artworks by artists who identify as Chicano/a/x\, Latino/a/x\, Indigenous\, and Native American.  The artists whose work is featured in the exhibition use the street as their medium to create graffiti and/or murals. On the street\, their work is widely accessible to passersby\, yet also ephemeral. The artists often know the cityscape intimately and their art is a significant marker of place. \n \nThe exhibition depicts a cultural convergence of differing styles of street art from across the Southwestern United States and Northern Mexico including graffiti and murals. The exhibit will provide a unique opportunity for the NHCC to collaborate with artists and community members in new ways as we strive to illuminate the significance of this artform at home and throughout the Southwest. The exhibit will feature over 25 artists from across the Southwestern United States and Northern Mexico and open dialogue around street art from this era.

SUMMARY:Rendered Presence: Artistas de Nuevo México
DESCRIPTION:Rendered Presence: Artistas de Nuevo México – Guest curated by Vicente Telles\, the exhibition explores artworks by artists living and working throughout New Mexico. Many of the artworks are figurative and created on a scale that challenges limited understandings of New Mexican art. In their own way\, each artist explores identity and the self\, art history\, and the expanse of Hispanic\, Chicana/o/x\, and Latina/o/x contemporary art. \nThis exhibition is generously supported by Bank of America. \nParticipating Artists / Artistas participantes: \nVanessa Alvarado \nBeedallo \nGabriela Campos \nRubén Cantú \nPola Lopez \nAndres Martinez \nIsabela Ortega \nEric Romero \nTravis Ruiz \nMarie Sena \nVicente Telles \nDaisy Quezada Ureña \nJim Vogel \n  \nAbout the curator: \nVicente Telles is a Santero and Cultural Iconographer who is driven by the desire to honor the culture and tradition of his native New Mexico. He began painting traditional retablos using natural pigments created from clays and minerals on homemade gesso\, which is then sealed with an archival varnish. Always looking for ways to push boundaries\, his style has evolved to include various interpretations of traditional Catholic and cultural iconography\, which is evident in his social commentary retablos and his ongoing border culture series. In recent years\, Telles has worked to honor his network of fellow artists and is engaging in opportunities to expand network connections through organizing art shows throughout the southwest. Recently\, he was instrumental in organizing the multi-site exhibition Son de Allí y son de Acá in Albuquerque as well as in San Diego at Chicano Park Museum and Cultural Center.

SUMMARY:Booksigning & Reading: José Ángel Mañas: Guerrero. A Novel of Conquest and Resistance
DESCRIPTION:6:00 pm \nNHCC | Salón Ortega \nInstituto Cervantes Albuquerque is organizing a double presentation in New Mexico and Texas of the latest novel by José Ángel Mañas: Guerrero\, published in English by the University of New Mexico Press (UNM Press) and distributed nationally in the United States. \nAfter the publication of Conquistadores de lo imposible\, one of the best novels ever written about the conquest of America\, Mañas delves once again into the modern era and recreates\, with this absolutely real story\, what is perhaps the most singular life event in the whole of Spanish-American history: the story of Gonzalo Guerrero\, known as ‘the renegade.’ Guerroro was a Spaniard who\, after being shipwrecked on the Yucatán peninsula\, where he was captured by the Indigenous Mayan population\, ended up marrying the princess Za’asil and later fought against the Spaniards themselves. \nBoth presentations\, to be held at the National Hispanic Cultural Center in Albuquerque (NM) and the University of Texas at El Paso UTEP (TX) in collaboration with the University of New Mexico (UNM)\, are part of the Oralidad programme\, through which the Cervantes Institute promotes the culture of oral tradition and storytellers. \nThe author will be accompanied in Albuquerque by the executive director of the Instituto Cervantes Albuquerque Silvia Grijalba and the director of the UNM Press Stephen Hull\, and in El Paso by UTEP associate professor Andrea Cote. \nFree community event\, limited seating on a first-come\, first-serve basis. \n
