SUMMARY:Fantasía Fantástica: Imaginative Spaces and Other-Worldly Collage
DESCRIPTION:Art Museum hours and prices HERE \nFantasía Fantástica: Imaginative Spaces and Other-Worldly Collage features the fantastical creations of four artists whose works toy with space and expand the parameters of collage. The artists\, Nick Abdalla\, Cynthia Cook\, Carlos Quinto Kemm\, and Rachel Muldez\, collect objects and images that populate the day-to-day but often go unnoticed. They then reframe them as part of a new imaginative whole. The works in this exhibition offer opportunities to contemplate how fantasy and the imaginary inform daily life as well as the historical and contemporary climate of Hispanic and Latina/o art more broadly. \nSpace and scale are key components in each artist’s work. Each artist interacts with space both by changing the setting that encompasses their work\, as well as by creating a new world within the object. From delicate and intimate scenes to sizable\, yet graceful sculptures\, the magic is in the details as much as it permeates the broader environment created by the artworks.

A native New Mexican and daughter of laborers\, Mari-Luci Jaramillo grew from a studious child in La Vegas\, NM to become a teacher\, a leader in education reform\, a national advocate for civil rights\, and the first Latina Ambassador of the United States to Honduras. \nThis archival collection of correspondence\, speeches\, articles\, photographs\, and artifacts highlights her family history\, early adulthood\, and extensive career in higher education and government. It reflects the central beliefs of Mari-Luci Jaramillo’s life and career: family and community\, pride of heritage\, and that service to others is important.

DESCRIPTION:Tuesday-Saturday\, 9 am to 6 pm \nInstituto Cervantes presents an exhibition in four parts\, paying homage to Miguel de Cervantes\, the famous author of Don Quixote de la Mancha\, and commemorating the 400th anniversary of his death. \nThe first part\, “Quijotes del celuloide\,” displays posters from various movies made about Don Quixote over the years. The second\, “Don Quixote Quotes\,” comprises universal quotes regarding the influence of Cervantes’ work on English literature. “Back to Barataria\,” the third part\, is a journey around the southern states in the U.S.\,  with pictures of streets and other places with names taken from the novel\, and the fourth part is an exhibition of 400 drawings by New Mexico students.\nFree to the public

Like jazz\, flamenco has its roots in raw\, intimate improvisation upon standard structures; it improvises through interpretations of the structures of cante jondo\, or deep song. Red Note features original music and works composed and performed by a cast of international dancers and musicians. \nJesús Muñoz is nationally and internationally recognized for having created a unique original method and rhythm fusing his American roots with traditional Spanish influence. He has been called “riveting” and a “jazz session artist\,” with the live-performance direction of an orchestra conductor. During the March event\, families (limited to 25 participants) will get a 30-minute museum tour focused on the NHCC Art Museum’s current exhibit Fantasía Fantástica: Imaginative Spaces and Other-Worldly Collage led by artist Rachel Muldez\, whose work you will see in the exhibit. Following the tour\, the whole family can create their own artwork with Rachel’s help in the Pete V. Muldez notes\, “The materials and objects that I make are always a visual reference to the larger ideas of existence as a continuum and the current expansion of our known universe.” \nArtist Statement: \n“The objects I collect end up in piles in my studio and await re-examination. It is not uncommon for me to observe and admire an object for years before I am aware of its full aesthetic potential. The sculptures that come out of this process resonate with evolving understanding of our world and the study of other worlds\, galaxies\, and nebulas.”

SUMMARY:Book Reading and Signing: “Coyota in the Kitchen” by Anita Rodriguez
DESCRIPTION:2 pm to 4 pm \nAnita Rodriguez is a New Mexican artist and writer.  Her father’s side goes back ten generations in her beloved Taos valley\, and her mother is a painter who came to Taos from Austin\, Texas.  Anita’s training as an artist began in childhood from her mother and extended to her formal training at the Colorado College. With many artist shows to her credit\, Coyota in the Kitchen is Anita’s first full-length book.  Coyota in the Kitchen is a book of stories and recipes\, introducing the reader to two eccentric families that would never have eaten together\, let alone exchanged recipes\, but for the improbable marriage of the author’s parents. Recalling the good and the terrible cooks in her family\, Anita also shares the complications of navigating a safe path among contradictory cultural perspectives. She takes us from the mountain villages of New Mexico in the 1940s to sipping mint juleps on the porch of a mansion in the South\, and on a prolonged pilgrimage to Mexico and back again to New Mexico. Accompanied by Rodríguez’s vibrant paintings―including scenes of people eating on fiesta nights and plastering an adobe church―Coyota in the Kitchen shows how food reflects the complicated family histories that shape our lives.\nFree public event

It reflects the diversity of Latina/o art and expression in all of its vibrancy\, creativity\, pointed humor and social consciousness. DESCRIPTION:THIS EVENT IS SOLD OUT! \n8 pm \nPussy Riot is a Russian all-female protest art collective based in Moscow. Founded in March 2011\, it had a variable membership of approximately 11 women. They gained global notoriety when five members of the group staged a performance inside Moscow’s Cathedral of Christ the Savior in 2012\, which led to the extended imprisonment of three of the members. \nIn 2014-2016\, Pussy Riot recorded and released several videos: “Putin Will Teach You To Love The Motherland\,”\, “I Can’t Breathe” (named for the last words that Eric Garner said as New York City Police held him to the ground in a chokehold)\, “Chaika\,” “Organs\,” and “Make America Great Again.” \nThis performance will be the world premiere of Pussy Riot Theatre\, who will perform the story of Pussy Riot.  The performance will be followed by a discussion and Q&A. \nApproximate time of event: two hours including intermission.\n$17\, $22\, $27 \n\nThe title\, content\, photos/images and description for this event were provided to the NHCC by the organization renting the NHCC venue for the event. DESCRIPTION:5:30 pm to 7:30 pm \nSalud y Sabor\, a partnership between the Agri-cultura Network\, Street Food Institute\, and the NHCC\, is a free evening of food\, art\, and entertainment aimed at providing families with an opportunity to connect around nutrition\, cooking\, healthy lifestyles\, and culture. \nOnce a month\, community members gather for cooking demonstrations using fresh\, locally grown ingredients\, as well as fun art activities for kids and adults\, health screenings\, and live entertainment. DESCRIPTION:2 pm & 7 pm \nDance Visions: Festival of New Ballets is headlined by a new ballet by David Chavez. Chavez\, a dance icon in Albuquerque during the 1980s and early ‘90s who is known for such masterpiece ballets as Sleepy Hollow\, Carmina Burana\, and The Jungle Book\, has created his most epic ballet in over 20 years. His new work\, The Humiliation of Venus: A Mythical Fantasy\, is a multimedia one-act ballet based on mythological characters\, complete with Venus/Aphrodite\, Ares/Mars\, Adonis\, Pan\, and over 40 dancers\, with special stage combat guest artists Angelo and A.J. Collado. \n \nDominic Guerra has choreographed Las Soldaderas\, depicting the women who fought in the Mexican Revolution. Other choreographies include neoclassical works by Dr. Mel Tomlinson to music by Ravel\, Alex Ossadnik to music by Satie\, and Patricia Dickinson Wells’ work\, loosely based on survivors of catastrophe and war\, to music from the soundtrack of Schindler’s List. Gabriel Meléndez\, recently appointed director of UNM’s Center for Regional Studies\, as he takes us on a fun and insightful journey through the life of Mexican actor Mario Moreno and his beloved character “Cantinflas.” \nMoreno starred in scores of films from the 1930s through the 1980s\, and is also known for his Golden Globe-winning role as the ingenious valet Passepartout in Around the World in 80 Days. In Latin America and beyond\, he is a beloved icon. The talk will explore the impact of Cantinflas\, a character who is closely associated with the national identity of Mexico\, but whose cultural impact reaches far and wide. \nThe La Canoa Legacy Series features talks by Hispanic/Latino academic and community researchers with long-standing and distinguished records of research and teaching about New Mexico and the region. Like la canoa—referring in New Mexican Spanish to several utilitarian objects used to receive and transport people and resources and thus provide a service to the community—these talks are meant to serve the community by presenting new or overlooked information about our region to interested audiences. We want them to transport us to new understandings of our region and its rich cultural and historical inheritance\, and to move the conversation back and forth in rich dialogue between presenters and audience members.\nFree event\, open to the public.
