DESCRIPTION:Art Museum hours and prices HERE \n¡Aquí Estamos: The Heart of Arte! celebrates the NHCC Art Museum’s growing permanent collection with a revitalized vibe and a brand new selection of works. This exhibition was a collaborative project as the entire NHCC Visual Arts staff and interns combed through the collection and worked together to decide which pieces should welcome in 2017. This sampling explores the contributions of these artists and how each work can serve as a reminder of the heart that thrives in strong and resilient communities. \nThe collection contains over 2\,500 artworks by Hispanic\, Chicana/o\, and Latina/o\, artists from around the globe most of which have been generously donated to the museum by artists and collectors. It reflects the diversity of Latina/o art and expression in all of its vibrancy\, creativity\, pointed humor and social consciousness. The National Hispanic Cultural Center Art Museum exists to support and engage the work of these artists and share their creations and their stories with the broader community.

DESCRIPTION:NHCC Art Museum Community Gallery \nThe La Ultima Exhibición\, curated by Augustine Romero\, features visual interpretations of Rudolfo Anaya’s celebrated book\, Bless Me\, Ultima (1972)-a portrait of life in rural New Mexico as seen through the eyes of a young boy during World War II. Anaya tells of the spiritual healer\, Ultima\, as she guides young Antonio on a magical and moral journey in this novel that has inspired artists for decades. Romero curated a previous iteration of this exhibition in 2006 at the South Broadway Cultural Center and the NHCC Art Museum is thrilled to host the re-imagined version twelve years later. \nFeatured artists include: Jesús ” Cimi” Alvarado\, George C’de Baca\, Sylvia Ortiz Domney\, Christian Michael Gallegos\, Roberto Gallegos\, Eric Garcia\, Kristina Gonzales\, Nacho Jaramillo\, Al Na’ir Lara\, Chisim Bernal Lujan\, Oscar Lozoya\, Chris Ray Melendez\, El Moisés\, Derrick Montez\, Paloma Paz Nava\, Gabriel Luis Powers\, Chris Rivera\, Rebecca H. DESCRIPTION:Curated by Humans of New Mexico\, this exhibition features photo portraits and first person stories of everyday New Mexicans and their experiences in social movements. The intent of the exhibition is to engage community in conversation about how social movements have shaped and defined New Mexico and how New Mexicans have influenced social justice work beyond our state borders. There is a rich tradition of social justice initiatives in New Mexico. These serve as unique case studies promoting grass-roots\, distinctive solutions based on the philosophy of people power. This exhibit is a community-wide effort to capture the complex issues that affect our communities and voice the everyday practices of resistance. Agency through testimonials is at the heart of “People Powered: New Mexicans and Social Movements.”

DESCRIPTION:Art Museum hours and prices HERE \nNow\, you can also purchase the catalog for this incredible exhibit. \nBecause It’s Time: Unraveling Race and Place in NM examines race and identity in New Mexico and is a space for artistic expression that grapples with the complexities of who we are\, how we are understood\, and how that impacts the way we live (or don’t) in a variety of places.  The exhibition features approximately 26 newly created artworks by artists with different experiences in New Mexico alongside works from the National Hispanic Cultural Center Art Museum’s permanent collection. All of the artworks delve into  race and place through an intersectional lens alongside gender\, sexuality\, class\, nationality\, citizenship status\, etc. from local\, national\, and international perspectives. \nThis museum exhibition included much contemplation by the Visual Arts program staff and interns about what it might look like to create an exhibit that relinquished a bit of institutional control and placed it in the hands of the artists. Many of the works were not seen in their completed form until just weeks before the opening. DESCRIPTION:SHORT MYSTERY FICTION WORKSHOP (for beginning mystery writers). \nDo you love reading a good mystery? Have you always wanted to write one? This eight-week fiction workshop is designed for writers who want to jump into the field of mystery fiction.  Inspired by The Hit List\, an anthology of short mystery fiction by Latino/writers\, you will start a new mystery story from scratch and receive valuable feedback for revision from your fellow writers. The workshop culminates with a public reading of your new story at the NHCC. Those writing in English as well as English/Spanish are welcome. \nInstructor: Brenna Gomez is adjunct faculty at the University of New Mexico (UNM) where she teaches composition\, creative writing\, and in the freshmen learning community program. She received her MFA in fiction from UNM in 2016 and served as Editor in Chief of UNM’s national literary magazine\, Blue Mesa Review. Her fiction has appeared in Prairie Schooner and is forthcoming in StoryQuarterly. Brenna was the recipient of a 2017 Hedgebrook residency and the 2015 Hispanic writer award for the UNM Summer Writers’ Conference in Santa Fe. DESCRIPTION:10:30 am \nDavid V. Holtby will present “Lest We Forget\, World War 1 and New Mexico.” The title of Mr. Holtby’s presentation is from his recently published book by the same name\, which will be available for purchase at the meeting for $33. \nMore than 14\,000 New Mexicans served in uniform during World War 1 and thousands more contributed to the American home front. Yet today in New Mexico\, as elsewhere the Great War and the lives it affected are scarcely remembered. Lest We Forget confronts that amnesia. The first detailed study to describe New Mexico’s wartime mobilization\, its soldiers combat experiences\, and its veterans postwar lives. The book offers a poignant account of the profound changes these Americans underwent both during and after the war. \nDavid V. Holtby is the author of “Forty Seventh Star: New Mexico’s Struggle for Statehood: and has served as Associate Director and Editor in Chief of Universisty of New Mexico Press. SUMMARY:La Canoa: Mulattos of Cochiti: Caste in Spanish New Mexico
DESCRIPTION:2 pm \nPlease join Deputy State Historian Rob Martinez\, as he examines the role of racial mixing\, identity\, and the categorizing of humans living in Spanish Colonial New Mexico. The approach will be through the lens of the casta\, or caste system. Historical research\, genealogy\, and DNA all converge to provide a clearer understanding of Hispano roots in New Mexico\, as well as in Latino-Meso America and Hispanic Europe. \nDeputy State Historian Rob Martinez is a native New Mexican born and raised in Albuquerque. A graduate of the University of New Mexico with a B.B.A. in International Business Management\, Rob went on to pursue his interest in New Mexican culture and history at UNM\, earning an M.A. in Latin American history\, with an emphasis on church\, cultural\, and social practices of the Spanish Colonial period in New Mexico. Mr. Martinez worked for fourteen years as a research historian for the Sephardic Legacy Project\, scouring civil and church archives in New Mexico\, Mexico\, Spain\, France\, Italy\, Cuba\, and Puerto Rico\, analyzing documents for a research and publishing project about the Crypto-Jewish phenomenon in New Mexico and the Caribbean. Rob has presented papers and lectures on his research at the University of New Mexico as well as history conferences throughout the southwestern United States. He has also spoken to historical groups in New Mexico such as the Hispanic Genealogical Research Center of New Mexico\, the Albuquerque Historical Society\, and the Society for Crypto-Judaic Studies about research methodology\, unique findings\, New Mexico Hispanic culture\, and general History of New Mexico. Mr. Martinez is also a folk musician\, performing and promoting New Mexican Hispanic musical traditions for the past twenty years with his brother Lorenzo and their father Roberto Martinez in the group Los Reyes de Albuquerque. With his musical family\, he has performed in all parts of New Mexico\, and on multiple occasions has presented music and New Mexican culture at the Smithsonian Folk Life Festival in Washington\, D.C.\, the NEA’s National Heritage Fellowship Awards\, and also at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.

DESCRIPTION:September 28-30 & October 5-7\, 2018\n 7:30 pm—Friday-Saturday\n 2 pm—Sunday \nAugusto Federico Amador’s Atacama is a play about a man and a woman who meet in the northern Chilean desert while searching for bone fragments of loved ones disappeared by the Pinochet regime\, and find a deep and unsettling connection that shakes their souls. Juliet Salazar directs Bernadette Peña and James R. Chávez in this taut psychological drama. Finalist for the 2018 BBC International Playwriting Competition\, runner up for the National Latino Playwriting Award\,and 50 Playwright Project’s list of best un-produced Latino Plays. Join us for a day of studio visits as we accompany Earl McBride\, Monica Kennedy\, and Zahra Marwan in the places where they create. This monumental fresco depicts thousands of years of Hispanic history highlighting diverse cultural connections between people and places from the Iberian Peninsula to the Americas. The 4\,000 square foot painting is one of the largest frescos in North America. \nThe digitized imagery of the painting ensures that this culturally significant work can be a sharing and learning experience for students and families anywhere.
