DESCRIPTION:This exciting exhibit features approximately fifty works of art from the Joyce Kaser Collection. Southwest of Eden: The Art of Adam and Eve examines the various ways in which New Mexican artists and others visually portray these two famous figures as well as the flora and fauna in their surroundings.  For example\, how many apples are featured\, or are they pomegranates? Is the serpent male or female? Is it animal or human\, or half and half? Is Eve always the instigator or is Adam assuming some responsibility? Situated in the NHCC Art Museum’s highly popular community gallery\, Southwest of Eden invites the visitor to take a closer look at the imagery\, symbolism and story of what happened in the garden.

SUMMARY:Incubation: Art Created in the COVID-19 Era
DESCRIPTION:Incubation: Art Created in the COVID-19 Era\, is an online exhibit of artwork created by Albuquerque High School students under the direction of four teachers. The work was created at the end of the spring semester\, after schools closed across New Mexico in response to the COVID-19 crisis. \n \nPrior to school closures and the closure of the NHCC campus\, the AHS students and teachers were scheduled to hang an exhibit in the Pete Domenici Education Building on the NHCC. The students were working on completely different projects at that time and what you see here reflects their transition into online art instruction and the students’ reflections on this dramatic and sudden shift. Many artworks were submitted for this online exhibit and what is presented here is just a small sampling of the creativity that has taken place since March.\, \nDuring this time\, the teachers focused intently on how to continue supporting their students through these new challenges. There were many emotions about how the school year ended so abruptly and about the continued need for social distancing. Yet\, something magical also happened. The students created so much artwork in their homes that it needed to be shared and shown to others. The artwork demonstrates resourcefulness and creativity that is inspiring. There was so much artwork\, that we were only able to show a portion of it. \nIMPORTANT message to all the students!  All of the art created\, whether shown here or not\, is amazing! Please\, don’t stop creating. You are teaching the rest of the world about resilience and resourcefulness. \nTo all the teachers\, thank you! You all have been challenged in many ways. Your dedication to your students is evident in the honesty of your statements and the varied projects shown. You have not only taught craftsmanship but life skills. Through the lengthy and complicated process of transitioning to an online exhibit\, it is evident that your capacity for care and hard work is unwavering. These exhibitions have worked to expand a collective understanding of American art and identity through the lens of Hispanic\, Chicana/o\, Latinx\, and Latin American creative expression. \n \nThis exhibition is one way of holding up a mirror to the museum\, allowing staff\, artists\, volunteers\, visitors\, donors\, partners\, and community members to examine where the museum has been and its changes over time. The exhibition features artworks that comprise the permanent collection\, presenting them in a new light connected to the larger framework of the museum’s historical trajectory and future vision. \nThe museum’s path over the last twenty years has been influenced by the hard work and dedication of artists\, NHCC staff members\, partners\, volunteers\, and visitors from across the world. Nuestra Arquitectura: An Architectural Journey\,” an architectural history of the Center’s past\, present and future. This exhibit consists of text\, sketch drawings\, blueprints\, maps\, and photographs exploring Hispanic/Latinx culture and heritage as expressed through the buildings and landscape of the Center. DESCRIPTION:11 am (MST) \nThe National Hispanic Cultural Center is offering a guided tour of the Mundos de Mestizaje fresco by Frederico Vigil twice a week\, Thursdays and Fridays at 11 am. Located in the Torreón on the NHCC Campus\, Mundos de Mestizaje depicts thousands of years of Hispanic culture\, history\, and identity. \nAdmission for the tour is $2 and tickets are available for advance purchase below. Tickets can also be purchased in the New Mexico Mutual Welcome Center\, depending on availability. Capacity for each tour is limited. \n \nA Vision of History through Fresco… \nMundos de Mestizaje by Frederico Vigil is a mural housed in the Torreón on the campus of the National Hispanic Cultural Center. This monumental fresco depicts thousands of years of Hispanic history highlighting diverse cultural connections between people and places from the Iberian Peninsula to the Americas. The 4\,000 square foot painting is one of the largest frescos in North America. \nThe digitized imagery of the painting ensures that this culturally significant work can be a sharing and learning experience for students and families anywhere. Tickets will be available on Friday\, September 3rd at 10 am \nThe National Hispanic Cultural Center’s History and Literary Arts Program and the University of New Mexico’s Department of English present a reading\, performance\, and talk by U.S. Poet Laureate Joy Harjo as the Tenth Annual Rudolfo and Patricia Anaya Lecture on the Literature of the Southwest. Born in Tulsa\, Oklahoma\, Harjo attended the Santa Fe Indian School and was a faculty member at the University of New Mexico. She is a member of the Myskoke/Creek Nation\, and an award-winning writer\, performer\, and saxophone player. Harjo’s numerous publications include nine books of poetry\, a memoir\, a young adult novel\, a children’s book\, and five CDs featuring her poetry and music. She recently released her sixth CD\, I Pray for My Enemies. \n \nIn 2019\, Harjo was named the 23rd U.S. Poet Laureate—the nation’s first Native American to receive such an honor. She was reappointed to a second term in April\, 2020\, and a third term in November\, 2020. Her other prestigious awards include the Ruth Lily Poetry Prize\, the Academy of American Poets Wallace Stevens Award\, a PEN U.S. Literary Award for Nonfiction\, two National Endowment for the Arts fellowships\, and a Guggenheim Fellowship. Harjo is Chancellor for the Academy of American Poets and Chair of the Board of Directors for the Native Arts and Cultures Foundation\, and currently holds a Tulsa Artist Fellowship.

DESCRIPTION:The second National Latinx Writers Gathering (NLWG) will take place October 14-17\, 2021. It is open to any Latinx writer working in any genre. All events for the NLWG will be virtual. \nRegister Here \nFor more information\, check out the National Latinx Writers Gathering website. \nThe first-ever National Latinx Writers Gathering\, “Sembrando y Soñando\,” took place October 16-18\, 2020. As a result of the new coronavirus\, all weekend events were virtual. The first year of this unprecedented convening of Latinx writers emphasized community-building\, connection\, and experiential collaboration–determined by a national survey of Latinx writers who expressed what they want from a first conference of this kind. The first event will also determine the shape and content of annual Latinx convenings in the future–an undertaking we will co-create together. \nThe 2021 NLWG will take place October 14-17\, 2021. SUMMARY:The 21st Revolutions International Theatre Festival
DESCRIPTION:The 2021 Revolutions International Theatre Festival\, from October 20 through November 6\, 2021\, spotlights the cultural wisdom\, resilience\, and creativity of Colombia\, Haiti\, and Uganda through performances\, panel discussions\, and workshops all live-streamed and featured on-line. Produced by Revolutions Inc\, a new nonprofit organization and laboratory space dedicated to supporting and nurturing artists\, and presented in collaboration with the National Hispanic Cultural Center\, the festival will build upon the legacy of Tricklock Company and its deeply rooted artist-centric approach to production and collaboration. \nThe three-week festival seeks to shine a light on larger themes of collective liberation and healing.
