6 pm Enjoy a sampling of music from the sold-out opera based on Rudolfo Anaya’s beloved novel Bless Me, Ultima, surrounded by the artwork from the exhibit La Ultima Exhibición. This brand new opera, performed at the NHCC in February of this year, was commissioned by Opera Southwest, the NHCC, and San José-based Opera Cultura. The composer, Hector Armienta, worked with Mr. Anaya on the libretto. $20 (limited to 50)
7:30 pm Son Como Son bills itself as "Salsa, Cuban Style." Founded in 1993, it is unquestionably one of Albuquerque's longest-standing and most popular salsa ensembles. They play regularly to packed audiences comprising highly animated and dedicated salseros at the NM Jazz Workshop's Salsa Under the Stars series; at the Cooperage; and at special concerts, such as those at the Telluride Jazz Festival. 9 am to 8 pm The National Hispanic Cultural Center will present a beginning-to-end reading of Rudolfo Anaya’s acclaimed novel, Bless Me, Ultima. The reading will take place in the NHCC Art Museum where an exhibition, La Ultima Exhibición, enters its final month. Over 40 dignitaries, New Mexico authors, youth, adults and elders (including school students) will read, each for 15 minutes, between 9 am and 8 pm.
