SUMMARY:Festival Flamenco Internacional: Compañía Manuel Liñán\, Nómada
DESCRIPTION:8 pm \nFestival Flamenco Internacional de Alburquerque presents Compañía Manuel Liñán in Nómada. Featuring three bailaoras\, three bailaores\, three singers\, and two guitarists\, the work is a “collective journey” framing the art of flamenco in different geographic regions and different textures. It develops Liñan’s work as a choreographer\, director\, and dancer—exploring the different worlds that sustain him on his diverse paths. \nHumans remain innately nomadic\, now searching for the places and forms that meet emotional needs as well as providing basic sustenance. As these artists investigate new physical and emotional realms\, their performance is “a dance to movement\, a song to the immense tapestry in which we live\, with its infinite possibilities\, and with a particular ode to the creative migration responsible for personal and artistic survival.”\n$30\, $40\, $60\, $75

SUMMARY:The Art of Acquisition: New New Mexican Works at the NHCC
DESCRIPTION:Art Museum hours and prices HERE \nHow do museums acquire their collections? What makes an artwork\, or an artist\, worthy of collecting?   These are questions museums face every day and the National Hispanic Cultural Center (NHCC) Art Museum is no exception. \n“The Art of Acquisition:  New New Mexican Works at the NHCC” features art works that have been collected and added to the museum’s permanent collection over the last five years.  All of the pieces featured in this exhibition are by New Mexican artists or artists living in New Mexico\, and their work is displayed in the NHCC Community Gallery which is designed to showcase the artistic contributions of the local community. These acquisitions\, like the majority of the NHCC Art Museum permanent collection\, were given by artists and collectors and the museum would not be what it is today without the support of our generous donors. \nAccepting a donation is serious business and the NHCC Art museum has a rigorous process of approval before an object can become a part of the museum’s permanent collection. An object is first reviewed by the museum director and curatorial staff.  It is then presented to the NHCC Art Museum’s Collections Committee which is composed of art experts\, collectors\, and artists from throughout New Mexico.  When an object is approved by the committee\, the Director of the NHCC Art Museum and Visual Arts Program presents the piece at the NHCC Board of Directors Meeting for Board approval.  Only upon the Board’s approval does the object become a part of the NHCC Art Museum’s permanent collection. This process ensures that the NHCC Art Museum is the proper home for every object we acquire and it all begins with our donors and their affection for this museum. \nIn the last five years\, the NHCC’s Art Museum collection has grown– in fact doubled its size– through donations from communities and collectors. Very few objects are purchased because our acquisitions purchase fund has yet to be fully developed.  An acquisitions fund for the permanent collection would enable the NHCC Art Museum curators to target significant works by important artists for the collection.  We would be able to pay artists directly\, so that they would receive the full value for their visual creations.  Doing this would allow museum staff to continue to foster a supportive community interaction as well as follow best practices for museum curatorship and collection stewardship. \nWhile we hope to grow the acquisitions fund in the very near future\, we recognize the importance of acknowledging and celebrating the contributions of those who have helped the collection grow despite financial constraints.

SUMMARY:The Dolls Present Priscilla Queen of the Desert\, The Musical (Rental)
DESCRIPTION:Friday & Saturday—7:30 pm\nSunday—2 pm \nThis pop song-infused story of two drag queens and a transgender woman traveling across the Australian outback played on Broadway to sellout audiences and rave reviews.  It now makes its regional premiere right here in Albuquerque with all the glitz and glam you have come to expect from The Dolls (Albuquerque’s premiere theatre Drag Troupe).  That calls for a lot of sequins\, feathers\, and rhinestones…not to mention attitude. This joyous musical includes many popular disco hits that will have you standing on your 10-inch stiletto heels and dancing in the aisles!!!\n$27

SUMMARY:La Pasión de Mariachi: Salute to Mariachi History and Excellence
DESCRIPTION:5:30 pm \nLa Pasión de Mariachi is a celebration of the art form of mariachi. The purpose is to create greater awareness\, understanding and appreciation of traditional and authentic mariachi music by providing insights into the music\, band member make-up\, and instruments. Mariachi groups\, like orchestras\, are typically comprised of 18 to 20 members; many of the instruments\, such as the guitarrón\, are unique to this form of music. Performances will demonstrate various styles within the genre\, including son\, huapango\, and ranchera. \nThere will also be a demonstration of the beautiful teaching exchange between “master instructor” and student in violin\, guitar\, and voice. This exercise demonstrates the great gift of the workshop offered through Mariachi Spectacular de Albuquerque\, because it is very rare in any musical genre that iconic master musicians interact with and teach youthful students. It would be the equivalent\, in rock and roll\, of Mick Jagger and Keith Richards teaching voice and guitar to an everyday music student.\nFree Community Event
