DESCRIPTION:2 pm \nPlease join Valerie Rangel\, community planner and environmental planning consultant\, as she shares historical research\, land use planning\, and policy frameworks that shed light on issues of environmental contamination and public health while uplifting the voices of immigrant farm workers\, tribal members\, environmental and social activists from the communities of Nuevo México. She will focus on the history and contributions of the communities of Albuquerque\, Santa Fe\, Pueblo of Isleta as well as sacred sites\, the Gila River and Rio Grande. \nValerie Rangel earned a Master’s Degree in Community Regional Planning with an emphasis in environmental and natural resource management\, indigenous planning and public health. Her education involved environmental science\, southwest history\, Native American studies and cultural anthropology. Having taught college science courses\, she presently works as an environmental planning and public health assessment consultant and community program manager for the New Mexico Community Foundation (NMCF) and volunteers as a river steward and social justice activist. \nThis event is free and open to the public

Whatever their motivations\, no one can predict just how their paths will unfold or what transformations they will undergo. Walking the Camino follows a diverse group of pilgrims\, ages 3 to 73\, from all over the world as they attempt to cross an entire country on foot with only a backpack\, a pair of boots\, and an open mind. Featuring breathtaking vistas and engaging characters\, the Camino comes to life in this inspiring look at its magnetic and miraculous power to change lives. Presented in partnership with Instituto Cervantes and the Spanish Resource Center as part of the Bank of America Free Thursday Film Series. \nWalking the Camino will be introduced by Antonio Caballero\, director of the Spanish Resource Center at the NHCC\, and the film’s director Lydia Smith\, and followed by a Q& A with Lydia Smith. \n2014; Lydia B. Smith; English; 84 minutes; not rated.\nFree ticketed event; tickets available one hour before show \n \nThe Camino de Santiago (“Way of St. James”) is a large network of ancient pilgrimage routes that stretch across Europe and come together at the tomb of the apostle St. James (Santiago) in Santiago de Compostela in northwest Spain. Since the beginning of the 9th century\, when the tomb was discovered\, Santiago de Compostela has been a pan-European place of peregrination. The city’s Old Town was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985\, and the European Union declared the Camino de Santiago to be the first European Cultural Itinerary in 1987. According to Catholic tradition\, completing a pilgrimage on the Camino\, some 500 miles along the major routes\, assures forgiveness of one’s sins. The walk now attracts people of all faiths and backgrounds\, and over 200\,000 contemporary pilgrims embark on the journey each year. \nThe April films\, as well as the first May film\, in the Bank of America Free Thursday Film Series\, presented in partnership with Instituto Cervantes and the Spanish Resource Center\, have been selected for their insights into different elements of the Way\, capturing the spiritual significance and the rich history of this iconic pilgrimage.

There\, he encounters sinister old men\, strange disappearances\, spirits\, a peculiar priest\, and even the archbishop of Santiago de Compostela in this tale full of fantasy\, terror\, and humor. The stop-motion 3D animation film was partially produced through crowdfunding\, with a total of 560 producers. Presented in partnership with Instituto Cervantes as part of the Bank of America Free Thursday Film Series.\n2012; Fernando Cortizo; Spanish with English subtitles; 84 minutes; not rated. \nThe Camino de Santiago (“Way of St. James”) is a large network of ancient pilgrimage routes that stretch across Europe and come together at the tomb of the apostle St. James (Santiago) in Santiago de Compostela in northwest Spain. Since the beginning of the 9th century\, when the tomb was discovered\, Santiago de Compostela has been a pan-European place of peregrination. The city’s Old Town was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985\, and the European Union declared the Camino de Santiago to be the first European Cultural Itinerary in 1987. According to Catholic tradition\, completing a pilgrimage on the Camino\, some 500 miles along the major routes\, assures forgiveness of one’s sins. DESCRIPTION:Southwest of Eden:  The Art of Adam and Eve \nNHCC Art Museum Community Gallery \nThis exciting exhibit features approximately fifty works of art from the Joyce Kaser Collection. Southwest of Eden: The Art of Adam and Eve examines the various ways in which New Mexican artists and others visually portray these two famous figures as well as the flora and fauna in their surroundings.  For example\, how many apples are featured\, or are they pomegranates? Is the serpent male or female? Is it animal or human\, or half and half? Is Eve always the instigator or is Adam assuming some responsibility? Situated in the NHCC Art Museum’s highly popular community gallery\, Southwest of Eden invites the visitor to take a closer look at the imagery\, symbolism and story of what happened in the garden.
