SUMMARY:Herrera Internship Endowment
DESCRIPTION:The Herrera Internship Endowment was created by Dr. Denise Herrera to honor her parents (Yolanda and Fred Herrera) and grandparents (Reyna and Mariano Herrera)\, who did not have the opportunity to pursue higher education. As a native New Mexican\, Dr. Herrera has dedicated much of her academic and professional career to the advancement of underrepresented groups in higher education. As a participant in several diversity programs herself\, Dr. Herrera has mentored students from elementary through postdoctoral levels. This internship is intended to honor that tradition of “lifting others while we climb” and paying it forward. The Herrera Internship provides scholarships to Hispanic female students who complete an internship with the National Hispanic Cultural Center. \nWe are currently accepting applications for the Herrera Internship! The internship will begin in January 2021. Application deadline is October 31\, 2020. \nClick HERE for additional eligibility information and application instructions. SUMMARY:Virtual Reading and Discussion: Michael Tapia\, Gangs of the El Paso–Juárez Borderland: A History
DESCRIPTION:6 pm\nBookworks Virtual on Zoom: RSVP for this online event: https://www.bkwrks.com/mike-tapia \nPresented by Bookworks\, the National Hispanic Cultural Center\, and the University of New Mexico Press\, this thought-provoking book by Dr. Mike Tapia examines gang history in the region encompassing west Texas\, southern New Mexico\, and northern Chihuahua\, Mexico. Known as the El Paso–Juárez borderland region\, the area\, spanning 130 miles from east to west\, contains more than three million people. From the badlands—the historically notorious eastern Valle de Juárez—to the Puerto Palomas port of entry at Columbus\, New Mexico\, this area has become more militarized and politicized than ever before. Dr.Tapia examines this region by exploring a century of historical developments through a criminological lens and by studying the diverse subcultures on both sides of the law. \nFree Community Event\n \nDr. Mike Tapia earned his Ph.D. in Sociology from the Ohio State University and served on the faculty at UT-San Antonio’s Criminal Justice Department from 2003 to 2015. His teaching and research interests include crime theory\, race and crime\, juvenile justice\, and street crimes. He publishes on risk factors in juvenile arrest\, Latino arrest risk\, and Latino gang migration. His latest works examine Chicano street and prison gang organization in historical perspective.

SUMMARY:11th Annual Vocal Artistry Art Song Festival of New Mexico: Canciones Españolas
DESCRIPTION:7:30 pm\nVocal Artistry Website\, www.vocalartistryartsong.com \nPlease consider a donation to support programming at the National Hispanic Cultural Center.\nClick HERE to donate. \nVocal Artistry’s Art Song Festival is an annual festival open to all students\, singers\, and pianists living in the state of New Mexico. The goal is to encourage the further study of Art Song repertoire\, which plays a vital role in sculpting classical singers. Open performances by singers and pianists from all over the state are held before a guest faculty\, including international artists and representatives from the most renowned music conservatories. Master classes and open performances for all levels of singers and collaborative pianists are open to the public. Scholarship winners are then chosen on the basis of talent and artistic achievement; the scholarship awards\, from and for the community\, are presented at a final concert and reception. Over $10\,000 in awards\, through a sponsorship by the Meredith Foundation and the generosity of individual donors\, go to the deserving applicants. \n \nIsabel Bayrakdarian\nThis year\, for the first time ever\, Vocal Artistry goes virtual! For the 11th Annual Art Song Festival of New Mexico\, Canciones Españoles\, 59 students of singing and piano have submitted applications online to be adjudicated by international artists in Spanish Art Song. Soprano Isabel Bayrakdarian\, celebrated in opera houses and concert halls around the world\, will be adjudicating all the college singers. As the virtual format does not include a final award concert and reception\, the scholarship awards will be sent to the performers and displayed online. \nMatthew Valverde & André García-Nuthmann\n“Dos Tenores\,” a concert featuring Matthew Valverde\, André García-Nuthmann\, and pianist Kristin Ditlow\, has been rescheduled for September 4 at 7:30 pm.  It will be filmed in the Albuquerque Journal Theatre at the National Hispanic Cultural Center\, and can be seen virtually live. The concert brings to life the works of Jaime León\, Jean Berger\, Manuel María Ponce\, Federico Longas\, Manuel de Falla\, José López Alavéz\, Miguel Sandoval\, Mari Ésabel Valverde\, and Alberto Ginastera\, showcasing Art Song from Colombia\, Mexico\, Spain\, Guatemala\, and Argentina. \nKristin Ditlow\nVocal Artistry’s Art Song Festival sponsors include Air & Hammers—Edmund Connolly\, Maxine Thevenot; Albuquerque Institute of Music—Tatiana Bayliyeva; Albuquerque Music Teachers Association; Louise Bass; Marilyn Bernard; City of Albuquerque; Cris & Marilyn Barnes; William G. & Kellie Grady; Cynthia & John Hatley; Robin & Julius Kaplan; Linda Liechty; Desca Music; Opera Southwest; New Mexico Performing Arts Society; Polyphony: Voices of New Mexico; Mary V.
