Known as the El Paso–Juárez borderland region\, the area\, spanning 130 miles from east to west\, contains more than three million people. From the badlands—the historically notorious eastern Valle de Juárez—to the Puerto Palomas port of entry at Columbus\, New Mexico\, this area has become more militarized and politicized than ever before. Dr.Tapia examines this region by exploring a century of historical developments through a criminological lens and by studying the diverse subcultures on both sides of the law. \nFree Community Event\n \nDr. Mike Tapia earned his Ph.D. in Sociology from the Ohio State University and served on the faculty at UT-San Antonio’s Criminal Justice Department from 2003 to 2015. His teaching and research interests include crime theory\, race and crime\, juvenile justice\, and street crimes. He publishes on risk factors in juvenile arrest\, Latino arrest risk\, and Latino gang migration. His latest works examine Chicano street and prison gang organization in historical perspective.

Puebloan people had revolutions against Spanish political\, economic and religious institutions. Spanish colonists resisted Spanish  governors who thought themselves superior. Mexican New Mexicans resisted Mexican governors they did not like\, and Pueblo and Genizaro natives joined in. New Mexicans revolted against American governors and economic institutions when things were not to their liking. And even into the twentieth and twenty first centuries\, New Mexicans of all backgrounds fought for their rights. For the 11th Annual Art Song Festival of New Mexico\, Canciones Españoles\, 59 students of singing and piano have submitted applications online to be adjudicated by international artists in Spanish Art Song. Soprano Isabel Bayrakdarian\, celebrated in opera houses and concert halls around the world\, will be adjudicating all the college singers. Herrera (NMSU)\, and Levi Romero (UNM and New Mexico Poet Laureate) will read from the anthology and talk with moderator Valerie Martínez of the National Hispanic Cultural Center. DESCRIPTION:3 pm \n“Our Fair New Mexico” includes performances by musicians living in New Mexico. On June 21 at 3 pm\, the 14th concert of the series will feature ReVoZo a Dos: Vicente Griego\, “El Cartucho\,” and José Valle\, “Chuscales.” \nWatch the concert at 3 pm on the NHCC’s Facebook page:\nhttps://www.facebook.com/NHCCNM/ \n \nReVoZo draws upon Flamenco Puro and Rumba Flamenca tradition while combining these with elements of dance music\, including Cuban Son\, Reggae\, Cumbia\, Ranchera\, and Funk. The result is a magnetically danceable musical offering that is unabashedly modern\, yet stays true to its cultural roots. \nRenowned vocalist Vicente Griego\, “El Cartucho\,” has performed on stages throughout the world\, and has collaborated with some of the most respected flamenco artists of our time\, including world-renowned flamenco guitar master José Valle\, “Chuscales\,” from the Gypsy caves of Sacromonte in Granad\, Spain. ReVoZo\, under the direction of César Bauvallet\, an internationally acclaimed composer and the founder of the Cuban salsa group Son Como Son\, presents an extraordinary lineup of musicians\, each with a lifetime of experience and critical acclaim spanning myriad genres. \nThe New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA)\, in partnership with state museums\, historic sites\, and cultural institutions\, continues its series of virtual musical concerts this week.
