SUMMARY:ALMA: Mosaics From the Soul
DESCRIPTION:The ALMA Summer Institute (formally Mayor’s Art Institute) was created in 1999 to provide paid training and mentorship for artistically talented youth and adults through its apprenticeship model. The apprentices work with Lead Artists to create handmade tile mosaics\, helping with every aspect of making a public artwork. In 8-10 weeks\, they assist with design\, carve tiles from wet clay\, glaze tiles\, fire a kiln\, cement tiles to the wall\, and grout the finished artwork. The designs are conceptualized\, researched\, and drawn collaboratively to create rich\, multi-layered representations of our place\, our culture\, and our history. Through our apprenticeship model\, we help train the next generation of artists to strive towards an arts career/arts entrepreneurial path. This exhibit\, “Mosaics From the Soul” tells ALMA’s story\, shown through drawings\, photographs and narratives. \nLocation: History and Literary Arts Building \nFree and open to the public

DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, at 7 pm\nSunday at 2 pm \nClassical and contemporary dance combine with the eclectic music of two-time Grammy award-winning Taos Pueblo musician Robert Mirabal in this reflection of New Mexican cultures through dance\, music\, and spoken word. Mirabal collaborates with internationally renowned New York City Ballet dancer Jock Soto\, of Navajo and Puerto Rican descent; Soto\, who is originally from Gallup\, NM\, and will also make guest appearances onstage\, now lives in Eagle Nest\, NM. Additional choreographers for the production are director Patricia Dickinson Wells\, native New Mexican Dominic Guerra\, and internationally known Vladimir Conde Reche\, a native of São Paulo\, Brazil. His 2002 breakthrough PBS special\, Music from a Painted Cave\, is unsurpassed in Native American theatrical expression. \nA former principal dancer with the New York Ballet\, Jock Soto was one of the last dancers to be personally selected by founder George Balanchine when he was barely 16. He danced featured roles in over 40 ballets\, of which more than 35 were created for him. Instituto Cervantes has offered this series since 2010\, presenting contemporary work by women filmmakers and focusing on women’s concerns and issues. \nA palabra xusta is a game invented by a teacher for her students\, in which each child writes\, in one word\, what s/he has learned in that day’s class. The answers are put on the board\, and everyone chooses the best—the right word. In Miguel Piñeiro’s documentary\, 92-year-old Antía “Tita” Cal Vázquez\, who founded the Rosalía de Castro School in Vigo in 1961\, engages in a conversation with her cherished photographs and her memories. In a house where time seems to have stopped\, on a journey that crosses the boundaries of time and space\, she searches for the right words to tell us about her childhood\, her vocation\, the great love of her life—everything that shaped her as a woman and an educator. This family-friendly event\, also featuring drinks and delicious Latin cuisine\, will be held in the NHCC’s enchanting Fountain Courtyard. \n$12 w/ $2 discount for NHCC members; free for children 12 and younger \n \nSon Como Son bills itself as “Salsa\, Cuban Style.” Founded in 1993\, it is unquestionably one of Albuquerque’s longest-standing and most popular salsa ensembles. The band has played regularly to packed audiences of dedicated and enthusiastic salseros at the NM Jazz Workshop’s Salsa Under the Stars series; at the Cooperage; and at special concerts in venues such as the Telluride Jazz Festival. Son Como Son is directed by renowned trombonist\, vocalist\, percussionist\, composer\, and arranger César Bauvallet\, who moved from Havana\, Cuba to Albuquerque in 1992. \nIvón Ulibarrí & Café Mocha\, also one of Albuquerque’s oldest and hottest salsa bands\, serves up a blend of son\, cha-cha\, merengue\, cumbia\, and other styles from the Caribbean and beyond. We will meet in the Creative Classroom in the Pete V. Domenici Building. \nPlease pre-register HERE (so we know how many materials to prepare) \nThis month\, work with guest artist Sean Wells who will discuss working in the contemporary style inspired by traditional Spanish Colonial Art forms. She will lead us in a painting workshop using acrylic paints on canvas. Paintings created during this month’s HAH or Vamos will be voluntarily included in an exhibition in the education building. \n \nAbout Sean Wells: \nSean’s artwork has been featured on internationally distributed beer labels (Cerveza de los Muertos)\, nationally distributed wine labels (La Catrina Vino) and New Mexico Lottery Scratchers for which she received a national award for top scratcher design. She is an award-winning 5th generation Spanish Colonial artist and juried member of the Spanish Colonial Arts Society in the retablo category\, promoting the traditional arts through her television show\, New Mexican Santera.  Sean received “Best Visual Artist 2016” and “Top 5 Artists” 2017 and 2018 from the readers of Albuquerque the Magazine. SUMMARY:¡HAH! Happy Arte Hour
DESCRIPTION:5:30 pm to 7:30 pm \nOn the first Thursday of the month\, NHCC invites adults for artistic fun in a relaxed social setting\, which includes snacks\, refreshments\, and beer & wine for sale from Pop Fizz. This is a great opportunity for friends to hang out\, a unique date night option\, or a place to come solo and connect with fellow art enthusiasts.\nPlease pre-register using the link HERE (so we know how many materials to prepare). \nThis month\, work with guest artist Sean Wells who will discuss working in the contemporary style inspired by traditional Spanish Colonial Art forms. She will lead us in a painting workshop using acrylic paints on canvas. Paintings created during this month’s HAH or Vamos will be voluntarily included in an exhibition in the education building. \n \nAbout Sean Wells: \nSean’s artwork has been featured on internationally distributed beer labels (Cerveza de los Muertos)\, nationally distributed wine labels (La Catrina Vino) and New Mexico Lottery Scratchers for which she received a national award for top scratcher design. She is an award-winning 5th generation Spanish Colonial artist and juried member of the Spanish Colonial Arts Society in the retablo category\, promoting the traditional arts through her television show\, New Mexican Santera.  Sean received “Best Visual Artist 2016” and “Top 5 Artists” 2017 and 2018 from the readers of Albuquerque the Magazine. SUMMARY:Breathe\, Barelas\, Breathe: A Staged-Reading of a Trilogy of One-Act Plays
DESCRIPTION:7 pm \nIn the NHCC Wells Fargo Auditorium\n \nThis will be a staged reading of the entire trilogy (90 minutes) followed by refreshments. \nThis trilogy of one-act plays is written by Barelas resident playwrights Raúl Garza\, Leonard Madrid and Mónica Sánchez\, and inspired by the history\, dreams and musings of one of Albuquerque’s oldest neighborhoods. This trilogy has been developed with the support of Artful Life’s El Puente/Barelas project and in partnership with the NHCC and Homewise. \nTwo additional readings of the plays are below: \nUPCOMING\nSaturday\, August 3\, 7 pm at Orpheum Arts Space\n500 2nd St\, SW\, Albuquerque\, NM 87102\nStaged reading of the entire trilogy (90 minutes). Arrive early to see a photo exhibit about Barelas. Followed by refreshments. \nPAST\nSunday\, July 28\, 6 pm at B. Ruppe Drugstore parking lot\n807 4th St SW\, Albuquerque\, NM 87102\nFree food and drink followed by a reading of excerpts from the trilogy. \nThe playwrights:  \nRaúl Garza is a Barelas-inspired playwright who tells stories that resound with culture\, identify\, and sense of place. His full-length play\, Fantasmaville\, received the National Latino Playwriting Award. When not writing\, Raúl explores kundalini yoga\, devours pop culture\, and travel beyond his means. www.theraulito.com. \nLeonard Madrid works as a designer\, actor\, playwright\, and educator in Albuquerque. His plays\, Tecolotito\, Perla\, and Aurora\, have received a Kennedy Center’s Award for Latino Playwrights.
