SUMMARY:Incubation: Art Created in the COVID-19 Era
DESCRIPTION:Incubation: Art Created in the COVID-19 Era\, is an online exhibit of artwork created by Albuquerque High School students under the direction of four teachers. The work was created at the end of the spring semester\, after schools closed across New Mexico in response to the COVID-19 crisis. \n \nPrior to school closures and the closure of the NHCC campus\, the AHS students and teachers were scheduled to hang an exhibit in the Pete Domenici Education Building on the NHCC. The students were working on completely different projects at that time and what you see here reflects their transition into online art instruction and the students’ reflections on this dramatic and sudden shift. Many artworks were submitted for this online exhibit and what is presented here is just a small sampling of the creativity that has taken place since March.\, \nDuring this time\, the teachers focused intently on how to continue supporting their students through these new challenges. There were many emotions about how the school year ended so abruptly and about the continued need for social distancing. Yet\, something magical also happened. The students created so much artwork in their homes that it needed to be shared and shown to others. The artwork demonstrates resourcefulness and creativity that is inspiring. There was so much artwork\, that we were only able to show a portion of it. \nIMPORTANT message to all the students!  All of the art created\, whether shown here or not\, is amazing! Please\, don’t stop creating. You are teaching the rest of the world about resilience and resourcefulness. \nTo all the teachers\, thank you! You all have been challenged in many ways. Your dedication to your students is evident in the honesty of your statements and the varied projects shown. You have not only taught craftsmanship but life skills. Through the lengthy and complicated process of transitioning to an online exhibit\, it is evident that your capacity for care and hard work is unwavering. Again\, thank you. \nPlease click HERE and leave a comment for Teachers\, Artists or NHCC staff\, about this exhibit.

SUMMARY:Kiss of the Spider Woman
DESCRIPTION:All events at the NHCC through April 30\, 2020 have been cancelled / postponed.\nPlease call the NHCC at 505-246-2261 for more information. \nThursday-Sunday\, April 16-19 & 23-26\, 2020\n7:30 pm—Thursdays\, Fridays\, and Saturdays\n2 pm—on Sunday \nKiss of the Spider Woman by Manuel Puig in an English translation by Allan Baker\, presented in partnership with The Vortex Theatre and  directed by Marty Epstein\, is the story of a developing relationship between two men—a gay window dresser and a dedicated socialist revolutionary—who share a cell in an Argentinian prison during the rule of the military junta in the 1970s. What brings the two together are their shared humanity and the commonalities that they discover during their time in prison. Originally Puig’s best-known novel\, Kiss of the Spider Woman was later adapted by the author for the stage\, and was subsequently made into both a film and a musical. While focusing on the relationship between the two main characters\, it provides insight into this chaotic chapter in Argentina’s history\, as well as the nature of dictatorships. \n$22 with a $2 discount for students\, seniors and NHCC members; $10 Thursday performances \n \nThank you to our Performing Arts Season Sponsors Heritage Hotels and Resorts\, the Albuquerque Journal and Southwest Airlines!

SUMMARY:Book Reading and Signing\, Sergio Troncoso\, A Peculiar Kind of Immigrant’s Son
DESCRIPTION:POSTPONED. \nCheck back for new date and time. \nFree and open to the public. \nHow does a Mexican-American\, the son of immigrants\, a child of the border\, la frontera\, leave home and move to the heart of gringo America? How does he adapt to the worlds of wealth\, elite universities\, the rush and power of New York City? How does he make peace with a stern old-fashioned father who has only known hard field labor his whole life? With echoes of Dreiser’s American Tragedy and Fitzgerald’s Gatsby\, Troncoso tells his luminous stories through the lens of an exile adrift in the 21st century\, his characters suffering from the loss of culture and language\, the loss of roots and home as they adapt to the glittering promises of new worlds which ultimately seem so empty. \n \nSergio Troncoso is the author of The Last Tortilla and Other Stories\, Crossing Borders: Personal Essays\, and the novels The Nature of Truth and From This Wicked Patch of Dust. He’s taught at the Yale Writers’ Workshop for many years. Troncoso is Vice President of the Texas Institute of Letters and a member of the Hispanic Scholarship Fund’s Alumni Hall of Fame. He has also been a recipient of numerous awards\, including the International Latino Book Award\, the Premio Aztlan Literary Prize\, and the Southwest Book Award. He was born in El Paso\, Texas\, and attended Harvard College and Yale University\, where he earned graduate degrees in international relations and philosophy. \n“Sergio Troncoso is one of our most brilliant minds in Latina/o Literature. These new stories demonstrate that he is also possessed of a great corazón. This is a world-class collection. Troncoso continues to raise the bar for the rest of us. Highly recommended.” –Luis Urrea\, author of The House of Broken Angels and The Hummingbird’s Daughter \n“These poignant short stories shed a startling light on the middle-class experience of Chicanos in New York…Sergio Troncoso dispels the myth of assimilation as a safe haven and reminds readers that distance from a working-class upbringing doesn’t absolve a person from the responsibility to one’s community.”–NBC News\, 15 great new books for Hispanic Heritage Month \nBookworks will sell books for this afternoon reading.  The NHCC book club will be discussing the book on Thursday\, March 26\, from 5:30- 7 pm in the NHCC Library

SUMMARY:27th Annual César Chávez Day Fiesta
DESCRIPTION:All events at the NHCC through April 9\, 2020 have been cancelled / postponed.\nPlease call the NHCC at 505-246-2261 for more information. \nMarch—10:30 am\nFiesta—12 noon-3 pm \nJoin us in honoring the life and legacy of César Chávez at the 27th annual César Chávez Day Fiesta\, with a march—La Marcha de Justicia– beginning at 10:30 am at the National Hispanic Cultural Center and ending at noon on the Center’s Plaza Mayor.  Following the march\, the family fiesta at the Center includes poetry\, dancing\, community exhibits\, children’s activities and games\, food\, and live music by Ivón Ulibarrí’s Café Mocha and the All Star Band. This event also honors the 2020 César Chávez and Dolores Huerta ¡Sí Se Puede! Awardees—people who have served our community in the spirit of the United Farm Workers leaders. \nFree public event \n \nWe are proud once again to welcome Dolores Huerta\, celebrating her 90th birthday this year\, to deliver our keynote speech. A native of Dawson\, NM\, Huerta was co-founder\, with César Chávez\, of the United Farm Workers Union. In 2012\, she was recognized for her decades of ceaseless civil rights and labor organizing when Barack Obama granted her the Presidential Medal of Freedom Award\, the greatest civilian honor in the United States. This year’s César Chávez Day festivities will include the dedication of Avenida Dolores Huerta\, a portion of Albuquerque’s Bridge Boulevard that has been renamed in her honor. Avenida Dolores Huerta\, running from the city/county boundary at the Rio Grande to the east and Isleta Boulevard to the west\, will connect to Avenida César Chávez\, making it the nation’s first intersection of streets bearing the names of these two civil rights leaders who worked side-by-side for so many years.
