The film follows a group of New Mexicans throughout 2017 as they collide in unconventional and unexpected ways\, all while trying both to uncover and to keep hidden secrets that could change their lives forever. Cariños is unique because there are two distinct versions of this experimental fictional drama. The first version played out over the course of 2017 and broke the film into 53 individual scenes\, or episodes\, that premiered weekly online until its conclusion on the last day of the year. The second version\, premiering tonight\, compiles all of the episodes into a single\, unified feature film that asks viewers if there is actually any one right way to love. Cariños contains adult language and content\, and may not be suitable for all audiences. DESCRIPTION:10:30 am \nThe February 3\, 2018\, speaker is Dr. Richard Melzer and the title of his presentation is “Captain Maximiliano Luna a New Mexico Rough Rider.” Dr. Melzer’s presentation is from his recently published book by the same name. The book will be available for purchase at the meeting. \nTheodore Roosevelt called his men “children of the dragon’s blood\,” those Rough Riders who bravely followed him up Cuba’s Kettle and San Juan hills in the face of blistering Spanish rifle and artillery fire.  Surely no Rough Rider deserved that title more than Captain Maximiliano Luna of New Mexico.  Yet his fascinating life has remained in the shadows of history until now.  Dr. Melzer thankfully gives us\, Luna’s vibrant story for the first time in this thoroughly researched and important biography.  This is both a hero’s tale and tragic reminder of the supreme cost of war. \nRichard Melzer is a Regents professor of history at the University of New Mexico’s Valencia campus.  A former president of the Historical Society of New Mexico\, he is the author of two dozen books and over a hundred articles on New Mexico history.

DESCRIPTION:2pm \nPlease join Anita Huizar-Hernández\, Assistant Professor of Border Studies\, Department of Spanish and Portuguese at University of Arizona for a rousing La Canoa presentation on the Peralta Land Grant\, exploring the creation and collapse of Reavis’s Peralta Grant plot as well as its subsequent fictionalization and eventual disappearance from the national imaginary. \nIn the late-nineteenth century\, an ex-Confederate soldier from Missouri named James Addison Reavis planned what was going to be the largest swindle in U.S. history: he was going to steal the greater portion of the Arizona and New Mexico territories. His plan hinged on the treaty that ended the U.S.-Mexico War\, the 1848 Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo\, and its promise to honor Spanish and Mexican land grants in the newly acquired territories so long as their title could be validated in a U.S. court. With these provisions in mind\, Reavis decided to fabricate and then present to the U.S. Court of Land Claims a fake land grant that stretched 18\,750 square miles and included the southern route of the transcontinental railroad\, the growing metropolis of Phoenix\, and valuable mining and agricultural land.\nThis is a free public event

DESCRIPTION:8 pm \nThe first half of the New Mexico Jazz Latino Orchestra’s latest offering\, From the Beginning\, celebrates the music written by and associated with the great Dizzy Gillespie. The featured artist\, Bobby Shew on trumpet\, is an international jazz star and a personal friend of Mr. Gillespie. Joining Mr. Shew is tenor saxophonist Doug Lawrence\, who toured with Mr. Gillespie and his band in the 1980s; master Cuban musician César Bauvallet\, who performed with Mr. Gillespie when he travelled to Havana on the 1970s\, leads the rhythm section on congas. \nThe second half of the show features a tribute to the great Chabuca Granda\, widely considered Peru’s most legendary singer. NMJLO performs Ms. Granda’s music in the “Salsa Criolla” style\, in which salsa and jazz musicians present a blend of salsa repertoire with Afro‐Peruvian festejo backgrounds\, synchronizing these two popular musical styles with traditional instrumentation to provide a blend of ancestral and contemporary tones. This year NMJLO is proud to present\, directly from Lima\, Peru\, Tito Manrique. Mr. Manrique is a Salsa Criolla guitarist\, composer\, and arranger who enjoys immense popularity throughout South America\, and who will bring with him brand new arrangements of music associated with Ms. Granda.
