Reviving and updating the Chicano string band style that once flourished in New Mexico, they bring their consummate musicianship to northern New Mexican polka and chotis, Mexican huapango and son calentano, and classic borderlands conjunto. No experience necessary. 7 pm – 8 pm Intermediate and Advanced - In order to participate in this class, dancers must know how to keep time, closed position calls, dame, enchufla, and outside turn. Los TexManiacs incorporates elements from genres including rock & roll and jazz, while still honoring the roots of Tejano conjunto; their album Borders y Bailes won the 2010 Grammy Award for Tejano Album of the Year. Patio | Fountain Courtyard 1701 4th Street SW, Albuquerque, NM, United States7:30 pm (doors open at 6:30 pm) A special mid-week performance in the series features TradiSón, the house band at La Bodeguita del Medio restaurant in Havana, famous for a storied clientele including Ernest Hemingway and Pablo Neruda. The band, as its name suggests, specializes in the son, a musical form that combines Afro-Cuban rhythms and Spanish melody, while performing other lively Cuban musical genres such as guaracha, guajira, and bolero. Body isolation movements, reggaeton, and Latin Hip Hop on August 1 and August 8 7-8 pm in the Salon Ortega at the National Hispanic Cultural Center. All ages and all levels welcome. Carlota began dancing at the age of 2. She currently teaches jazz, hip-hop, tap, and contemporary dance at Fishback studio of dance. ABQ Latin Dance Festival 2017: Timbalive
Plaza Mayor7 pm to 12 am The annual Albuquerque Latin Dance Festival, a three-day celebration of rhythm and movement, features performances by world-class dancers as well as non-competitive dance showcases, parties, and workshops. Additional attractions include dance films, lectures, and live musical performances. Friday night’s event, following Latin Dance Night in Old Town, is a fun-filled evening of salsa dancing at the NHCC. The festival’s main concert on Saturday night features Leo García and Timbalive, for a magical night of music and dance on the Center’s Plaza Mayor. (more...)
