SUMMARY:The Neighborhood Project: Las Voces de Barelas Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:The Neighborhood Project: Las Voces de Barelas is a community art initiative by Working Classroom student artists under the instruction of guest teaching artist Adria Malcolm which set out to explore the people of the historic Barelas area through the mediums of environmental portraiture and feature-writing. The project aims to bridge the gap between otherness and commonality through the sharing of the most vital elements of an individual’s story. \nThe project artists learned how to conduct thorough interviews\, explored rapport building with subjects\, and learned the basics of journalistic feature writing and portraiture. Las Voces de Barelas serves as a way for Working Classroom to give back and explore the community that it calls home and present stories of a shared human experience.

SUMMARY:Book Reading and Signing: Norma Elia Cantú\, Cabañuelas
DESCRIPTION:2 pm \nNorma Elia Cantú will read from her new novel\, Cabañuelas (University of New Mexico Press\, 2019)\, the successor to her award-winning Canícula: Snapshots of a Girlhood en la Frontera\, which chronicles her childhood experiences on the border. Nena leaves Laredo\, Texas\, and moves to Madrid\, Spain\, to research the historical roots of traditional fiestas in Laredo. Immersing herself in post-Franco Spain and its rich history\, its food\, music\, and fiestas\, Nena finds herself falling for Paco\, a Spaniard. Nena’s research and experiences teach her about who she is\, where she comes from\, and what is important to her. As her work comes to a close\, Nena must decide where she can best be true to her entire self: in Spain with Paco or in Laredo\, her home\, where her job and family await her return. After reading\, Cantú will talk about the craft of writing a novel—in celebration of National Novel Writing Month (November). \nThis event is free and open to the public \nPresented in conjunction with the University of New Mexico Press

SUMMARY:There Must Be Other Names for the River
DESCRIPTION:7 pm (doors open at 6 pm) \n516 ARTS\, the National Hispanic Cultural Center\, and UNM Art & Ecology Program artists Marisa Demarco\, Dylan McLaughlin\, and Jessica Zeglin present There Must Be Other Names for the River. This composition for six singers is based on streamflow data from the river known today as the Rio Grande. Each singer channels the river\, representing a point where flows were observed and recorded. Arranged in the shape of the water body within the performance space\, the singers’ voices change in intensity with the flows and distort over time as human interference is felt along the length of the river. After embodying past decades\, the singers project possible futures for the voice of the river and the bodies through which its waters flow. The artists say\, “The Rio Grande is itself a living being who has experiences over time including birth\, growth\, and possibly death…. By listening and embodying\, can we change our relationships with the river and see beyond its uses to humans? Can we hear the river as more than a resource?” The original sound art performance is presented in conjunction with Species in Peril Along the Rio Grande\, an exhibition currently on view at 516 ARTS. \nFree public event \nFor more information on Species in Peril Along the Rio Grande click HERE. \nTo download a Species in Peril Along the Rio Grande program click HERE. \nThank you to our Performing Arts Season Sponsors Heritage Hotels and Resorts\, the Albuquerque Journal and Southwest Airlines!

SUMMARY:La Cosecha Student Leadership Institute
DESCRIPTION:The National Hispanic Cultural Center is pleased to be a co-sponsor of the 11th Annual Student Leadership Institute (SLI 2019). \nSLI will take place Friday\, November 15\, at the National Hispanic Cultural Center. The institute is part of La Cosecha Dual Language Conference and will bring together over 240 linguistically and culturally diverse students from around the country to focus on issues of identity\, leadership\, and the development of an asset-based perspective related to their diverse backgrounds. \nGathering the Truths of our Past…\nEmbracing our Present…\nPreparing our Future! \nMISSION\nThe mission of the DLeNM Student Leadership Institute is to support linguistically and culturally diverse youth to: \n\nembrace language\, culture\, and history as a source of power and responsibility;\nembrace their power and responsibility as an invitation to lead; and to\nembrace their invitation to lead as an incentive to build partnerships with each other as a means of preparing themselves for a future of advocacy and the use of power for the betterment of our diverse communities.\n\n \nDESCRIPTION\nSLI 2019 will begin with students reflecting and working together to define their roles for the day and the work to which they are committing.  Students will then attend workshop sessions in the morning and after lunch. Some workshops will be student-led and all will support participants to reflect on ways to affect positive change in their communities. \nTertulias (brief round-table conversations) will take place in the afternoon and create a space where adult leaders will host intimate conversations about their own linguistic and cultural background and how their diverse experiences have helped them in their lives and along their career paths. They are intended to be informal and are a great way for adults to engage and briefly mentor our student leaders. \nSLI truly is an investment in our collective future that has the potential to be a benchmark moment in the minds of each of the participating students.  As a networking opportunity for our future leaders\, it ensures that our young people form strong and meaningful peer relationships at a young age\, recognize assets\, and develop a sense of responsibility\, commitment\, and concern for one another.

SUMMARY:Film: ¡COLORES! The Musical Adventures of John Donald Robb in New Mexico
DESCRIPTION:7 pm \nThe late John Donald Robb loved and composed all kinds of music\, but his passion for the songs of everyday folk is what he is remembered for most. Roaming the countryside of the Southwest during the 40s and 50s\, Robb recorded and transcribed over 3\,000 Hispano folk songs\, the largest collection of its time. This documentary celebrates the life of this adventurous musician and the modern day ethnomusicologists who continue to record and archive New Mexico’s disappearing folk music traditions. SUMMARY:Book Reading and Signing: Jaima Chevalier and her Book "Fringe"
DESCRIPTION:6:30 pm \nJaima Chevalier’s book Fringe is a tribute to flamenco legend María Benitez and includes almost 200 rare and exclusive images from locally famous to world-renowned photographers\, all showcasing Benítez’s central role in dance history. Beníitez is an iconic figure in American flamenco. Her riveting story begins with the complexity of her mixed Native American and Puerto Rican heritage followed by her extraordinary journey as a young woman leaving her home on the outskirts of Taos Pueblo to study flamenco in Spain. From the inherent irony of her identity as a Native American woman striving to master the art of a culture that had colonized the Southwestern United States\, she grew into an artist driven to forge her own way in the world\, starting a business\, \, a non-profit institution\, a school\, and a professional touring company. Her illustrious career\, from appearances in film and television to stages across the world\, is an inspiration to artists\, students of history\, and seekers of core human truths. Her ability to overcome both racial and gender discrimination made her equally comfortable on the Metropolitan Opera stage as well as dancing around a gypsy campfire–all coalescing to make her story one that dances straight into the heart of what it means to be an American original. \nJaima Chevalier\, a Santa Fe native\, is the author of five books including La Conquistadora: Unveiling the History of Santa Fe’s Six Hundred Year Old Religious Icon and Nativo (with Oliver Galvan-De La Cruz). Her documentary films include Veiled Lightning/Native Voltage (director) and El Corazon de Santa Fe (Producer). \nJoin us in the Salon Ortega of the historic History and Literary Arts Building on the NHCC Campus. \nThis event is free and open to the public

DESCRIPTION:7:30 pm \nAMP Concerts presents Todd Snider with Dean Alexander. Todd Snider has long been recognized as one of his generation’s most gifted and engaging songwriters. And this may be what the world is waiting to hear—just a man\, his guitar\, and the truth. \n$27\, $32 \n \nApproximate time of event: 2 hours including intermission. \n\nThe title\, content\, photos/images and description for this event were provided to the NHCC by the organization renting the NHCC venue for the event.
