SUMMARY:Reading & Booksigning: Celia López-Chávez\, Epics of Empire and Frontier
DESCRIPTION:2 pm to 4 pm \nJoin author Celia López-Chávez for a reading from her new book Epics of Empire and Frontier: Alonso de Ercilla and Gaspar de Villagrá as Spanish Colonial Chroniclers. \nEpics of Empire and Frontier reveals new ways of thinking about the themes of empire and frontier from the muse of the epic poems La Araucana by the Spanish nobleman Alonso de Ercilla and Historia de la Nueva México by Gaspar de Villagrá\, Mexican-born captain under Juan de Oñate in New Mexico\, both of which valorize the Spanish conquest of native peoples. Employing historical and literary analysis that goes from the global to the regional\, and from the sixteenth to the twenty-first centuries\, López-Chávez considers Ercilla and Villagrá not only as writers but as citizens and subjects of the powerful Spanish empire. \nThis is a free public event \n \nAlthough frontiers of conquest have always been central to the regional histories of the Americas\, this is the first work to approach the subject through epic poetry and the main events in the poets’ lives. López-Chávez also investigates the geographical spaces and landmarks where the conquests of Chile and New Mexico took place\, the natural landscape of each area as both the Spanish and the natives saw it\, and the characteristics of the expeditions in both regions\, with special attention to the violence of the invasions. In her discussion of law\, geography\, and frontier\, López-Chávez carries the poems’ firsthand testimony on the political\, cultural\, and social resistance of indigenous people into present-day debates about regional and national identity. \nCelia López-Chávez is a retired Associate Professor for the Honors College at the University of New Mexico and author of Con la cruz y con el dinero: Los Jesuitas del San Juan Colonial (With the Cross and with Money: Jesuits in Colonial San Juan).

SUMMARY:Revolutions International Theatre Festival: Engine\, Un día más sobre la tierra
DESCRIPTION:8 pm \nEngine\, from Argentina and France\, presents Un día más sobre la tierra\, a concert featuring violent and sophisticated guitars\, overlapped by the raw voices of two actor-musicians. The songs\, woven of Latin American rhythms and rock dynamics\, punctuated by simple and powerful theatrical ruptures\, poetically tell the story of an ancient device floating unseen over the skies of the world. The elegant protagonists sing without stopping\, dance scandalously\, and throw themselves on the floor with attractive complicity. Engine\, the always invisible machine\, carries the rhythm of the concert. They evoke it with their songs\, and if the machine appears\, they might remember something special.  If not\, it will have been a great waste of vital forces\, and people will wonder how only a couple of people can make such a sublime mess.\n$26 w/ $6 discount for students & seniors; group rates available

SUMMARY:Aliento: Fragmentos
DESCRIPTION:8 pm—Friday & Saturday\n 2 pm—Sunday \nIn Fragmentos\, Alice Blumenfeld and Esteban Garza will create an intimate\, cutting-edge flamenco experience in the NHCC Salon Ortega that includes poetry and spoken word as well as dance. It will include original music by Alex Conde (Valencia\, Spain) on the piano\, Joaquín Gallegos (Santa Fe\, NM) on the guitar and Guillermo Barrón (Monterrey\, México) on percussion. \nOur relationships with others\, objects\, places\, and the world make up parts of our whole\, but in any one moment\, are we complete? We leave fragments of ourselves with everyone we encounter. Sometimes it takes understanding just a small fragment to better see the whole. Fragmentos\, will examine these ideas through flamenco music and dance. \nAlice Blumenfeld’s dancing has been hailed as “sharp and exhilarating\,” and her groundbreaking contemporary choreography pushes the boundaries of flamenco\, breaking down stereotypes of the genre. Blumenfeld was the first and only Presidential Scholar in the Arts from New Mexico\, and has toured nationally as well as performing in Spain. She will be accompanied by Texas native Esteban Garza\, now residing in Albuquerque\, in a performance that includes poetry and spoken word as well as dance. \nAlex Conde is an award-winning jazz and flamenco pianist with degrees from Berklee College of Music and the Jose Iturbi Conservatory of Music in Barcelona. His works have been performed across the globe. Award-winning guitarist Joaquín Gallegos has performed with numerous ensembles in Spain and the United States; his latest album won critical acclaim for its innovation and virtuosity. \n$27 general admission; $17 for students

SUMMARY:La Canoa Legacy Talks: A. Gabriel Meléndez\, Humor and Healing: Cantinflas’ (Mario Moreno) Classic Screen Moments
DESCRIPTION:2 pm – 4 pm \nJoin A. Gabriel Meléndez\, recently appointed director of UNM’s Center for Regional Studies\, as he takes us on a fun and insightful journey through the life of Mexican actor Mario Moreno and his beloved character “Cantinflas.” \nMoreno starred in scores of films from the 1930s through the 1980s\, and is also known for his Golden Globe-winning role as the ingenious valet Passepartout in Around the World in 80 Days. In Latin America and beyond\, he is a beloved icon. The talk will explore the impact of Cantinflas\, a character who is closely associated with the national identity of Mexico\, but whose cultural impact reaches far and wide. \nThe La Canoa Legacy Series features talks by Hispanic/Latino academic and community researchers with long-standing and distinguished records of research and teaching about New Mexico and the region. Like la canoa—referring in New Mexican Spanish to several utilitarian objects used to receive and transport people and resources and thus provide a service to the community—these talks are meant to serve the community by presenting new or overlooked information about our region to interested audiences. We want them to transport us to new understandings of our region and its rich cultural and historical inheritance\, and to move the conversation back and forth in rich dialogue between presenters and audience members.\nFree event\, open to the public.
