DESCRIPTION:7 pm \nBorn in Costa Rica to pious parents who were embarrassed by their boyish daughter\, Isabel Vargas Lizano ran away to Mexico City to sing on the streets. At the peak of her initial popularity in the 1950s\, dressed in a poncho\, she interpreted the mournful\, yearning repertoire of canción ranchera without altering the female pronouns. Her Madrid concert premiere in the 1990s\, following years in rural isolation as an impoverished alcoholic\, brought her into contact with Pedro Almodóvar\, who helped his “idol” fulfill a dream of performing in Paris. She had just returned to performing when she agreed to a 1991 interview with filmmaker Gund; much of Chavela was filmed in that year. Despite a public persona as “the most macha of the machos\,” Vargas was still not entirely comfortable with identifying openly as a lesbian at the time of filming. She ultimately confirmed her sexual orientation in 2000 at the age of 81. SUMMARY:Festival Ballet Albuquerque: Sacred Journeys with Robert Mirabal
DESCRIPTION:Saturday at 7 pm and Sunday at 2 pm \nSacred Journeys\, presented by Festival Ballet Albuquerque in partnership with the NHCC\, is a reflection of our New Mexican cultures and storytelling through dance\, music\, and spoken word. Our Hispanic culture is prominent in the story “Las Soldaderas\,” choreographed by Dominic Guerra and depicting the story of the young lovers and the many brave women who fought in the Mexican Revolution. Two-time Grammy award-winning Taos Pueblo musician Robert Mirabal joins FBA onstage\, integrating Native American Pueblo culture of northern New Mexico with the Hispanic culture of the region. Choreographers for the project include featured choreographer Jock Soto\, Patricia Dickinson Wells\, Trey Pickett\, and Natalee Maxwell\, presenting Robert Mirabal favorites from the albums Songs from the Painted Cave\, The River\, and others. Mirabal\, a world-renowned musician\, composer\, poet\, actor\, and screenwriter\, is dedicated to keeping alive the centuries-old customs of Taos Pueblo\, as well as merging his Indigenous American sound with the music of Africa\, Asia\, and the Caribbean in a world music style that defies categorization. \nJock Soto was born on the Navajo reservation in Gallup\, NM to a Navajo Mother and a Puerto Rican father.  Following in the footsteps of his mother\, he first learned to hoop dance — an early foundation for what became one of the most celebrated careers at the New York City Ballet.  On the eve of his retirement from stage 2005\, The New York Times wrote “Ballet is a man called Jock.” \nOf Jock Soto’s memoir “Every Step You Take\,”ten-time Tony Award winner and recipient of the National Medal of Arts\, Tommy Tune said “Airborne in spirit\, earthbound in truth\, the words are moving and masterful.  Like the dancer himself.” \n$14\, $20\, $29\, $38\, $47 w/ $2 off for seniors\, children 10 and younger and NHCC members.\nGroup rates available.

Maripaz Vega\, a Spaniard\, is currently the world’s only professional female matador and is on the verge of achieving top ranking. Eva Florencia\, a young runaway from Italy\, is a neophyte driven by a childhood dream. Both women must deal with the legacies of sexism in Spanish bullfighting\, yet the passions that propel them are similar to those of male bullfighters—a drive to express themselves in a grand and peculiarly Spanish rite that is at once sport\, dance\, theatre\, and blood ritual. Through interviews shot in vérité style interspersed with archival footage\, the film offers a window on the highly choreographed and deadly match between bull and human that remains enormously popular in Spain\, even as it is reviled by many in an age of animal rights. Using satire and dark humor\, they ask themselves what the transition\, a process full of uncertainty and fear\, will mean for them. The play talks about power and the dreams of a dominant class as it imagines its place in the future of Chile\, comparing the vision for the country 30 years ago with what Chile is today. \nWith a vertiginous pace and provocative language\, the Perro Muerto Theater Company presents its own version of this original play\, asking itself about history\, politics\, and theatre with a special interest in how power is gained\, passed on\, and spread through society. SUMMARY:La Canoa Legacy Talks:  Genízaro Ethnogenesis\, Emergence\, and Futurism
DESCRIPTION:2 pm – 4 pm\nIn collaboration with UNM Center for Regional Studies \nJoin Associate Professor Moises Gonzales\, from the University of New Mexico’s School of Architecture and Planning\, as he relates the emerging story of the history\, identity\, and cultural evolution of the genízaro people of New Mexico during the March La Canoa Legacy Talk. \nAs defined by Fray Angelico Chavez\, genízaro was the designation given to North American Indians of mixed tribal derivation living among the Hispanic population in Spanish fashion: that is\, having Spanish surnames from their masters and Christian names through baptism\, speaking a simple form of Spanish\, and living together or sprinkled among the Hispanic towns and ranchos. Today the permanence of genízaro identity blurs the lines of distinction between Native and Hispanic frameworks of race and cultural affiliation. The talk will discuss the emergence of contemporary indigenous cultural production and futurism generated by genízaros in New Mexico\, as well as the collective work of New Mexican genízaro scholars compiled in a forthcoming anthology co-edited by Gonzales. \n \nMoises Gonzales is Associate Professor of Urban Design in Community and Regional Planning at the School of Architecture and Planning at the University of New Mexico. He is a genízaro heir of both the Cañón de Carnué Land Grant and the San Antonio de Las Huertas land grant. Gonzales also currently serves on the Board of Trustees of the Carnué Land Grant\, and has written various academic articles on the history and culture of genízaro settlements in New Mexico. He is a danzante in the Matachín and Comanche traditions of the Sandia mountain communities\, and co-editor\, with Dr. Enrique Lamadrid\, of Genízaro Nation: Ethnogenesis\, Place\, and Identity in New Mexico\, to be released by UNM Press in 2018.\nFree public event \nPresented in collaboration with Center for Regional Studies: http://crsinfo.unm.edu/.

Tirelessly leading the fight for racial and labor justice\, Huerta evolved into one of the most defiant feminists of the 20th century—and she continues the fight to this day\, in her late 80s. Dolores chronicles Huerta’s life from her childhood in Stockton\, California to her early years with the United Farm Workers\, from her work with the headline-making grape boycott launched in 1965 to her role in the feminist movement of the ’70s\, to her continued work as a fearless activist\, willing to accept the personal sacrifices involved in committing one’s life to social change. The film features interviews with Gloria Steinem\, Luis Valdez\, Angela Davis\, Hillary Clinton\, and Huerta’s children\, among others. Thompson\, who used him as inspiration for the character Dr. Gonzo in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas\, Acosta was himself the author of two groundbreaking autobiographical novels\, The Autobiography of a Brown Buffalo and The Revolt of the Cockroach People. His powerful literary voice\, brash courtroom style\, and notorious revolutionary antics made him a revered figure in the Chicano Movement of the 1960s and 1970s. The film weaves archival footage and images with dramatized portrayals of Acosta\, Thompson\, and other key figures and moments of the era. Additionally\, the 2018 César Chávez and Dolores Huerta ¡Sí Se Puede! awards will be presented to people who have served the community in the spirit of the United Farm Workers leaders. \nDolores Huerta\, a native of Dawson\, NM\, was co-founder\, with César Chávez\, of the United Farm Workers Union. In 2012\, Huerta was recognized for her decades of ceaseless civil rights and labor organizing when Barack Obama granted her the Presidential Medal of Freedom Award\, the greatest civilian honor in the United States. \nDanny Valdez joined the UFW in his early years\, and later became a founding member of El Teatro Campesino\, helping to produce theatre and compose music that brought the message of the UFW to the farmworker. Valdez is an accomplished actor\, musician\, and composer; he may be best known for his roles in such classic movies as Zoot Suit and La Bamba. \nDuring the week leading up to this wonderful event\, a collaboration of student and community organizations will hold Farmworkers Awareness Week\, a three-day event honoring the legacy of the farmworker community through interactive activities\, information booths\, art displays\, and farmworker presentations. This special event will be held at the University of New Mexico Student Union Building-Atrium\, April 2 through April 4 from 11 am to 3:30 pm.

DESCRIPTION:10:30 am \nThe April 7\, 2018\, speaker is Robert Torrez and the title of his presentation is “Voices From the Past: The Comanche raid of 1776 & Other Tales of New Mexico.” The title of his presentation is taken from his recently published book by the same name.  The book will be available after the meeting. \nRobert J. Tórrez was born and raised in the northern New Mexico community of Los Ojos and received his undergraduate and graduate education at Highlands University in Las Vegas and the University of New Mexico. He served as the New Mexico State Historian from 1987 until his retirement in December 2000. In addition to his monthly column Voices From the Past on New Mexico history\, he is the author of five books on various aspects of New Mexico history and has contributed chapters to more than twenty books and anthologies\, including a recent textbook for use in New Mexico schools.
