Participants will use ground up beetles and a variety of liquids to create paint that will be used on water color paper. Inspired by one of NHCC’s most popular past exhibits\, “The Piñata Exhibit: Sure to be a Smash Hit!” and the work of the Little Piñata Maker\, participants will make a tiny piñata out of card stock and tissue paper that can be used to wear or hang in your car\, the artist’s original inspiration. \nTour the Albuquerque Journal Theater (Performing Arts Building) \nJoin this tour for an exciting glance at what takes place behing the scenes! DESCRIPTION:2 pm\nSalon Ortega \nIn Voices from the Center of the World (Wings Press\, 2020)\, Randall has selected and translated 25 poets born in Ecuador between 1926 and 1993. These include some cultural heroes of the 20th century and many of the voices that define political dissent in Ecuador. The collection also focuses on a new generations of poets\, especially women and indigenous poets born after 1950. \nMargaret Randall is a feminist poet\, writer\, photographer and social activist. She is the author of over 50 books and a recipient of the 2019 Haydée Santamaría Medal from Casa de las Americas in Havana\, and the prestigious 2019 Poeta de Dos Hemisferios\, presented by Ecuador’s Poesía en Paralelo Cero. In 2017\, she was awarded the Medal of Literary Merit by Literatura en el Bravo\, Chihuahua\, Mexico. The University of New Mexico granted her an honorary doctorate in letters in 2019. Each woman in the HWC has her own story of success and accomplishment\, and these have been captured in the book\, Mujeres Valerosas\, published by the HWC in 2000. Join us for readings from the book and discussion about the HWC. \nThis is a FREE event OPEN TO THE PUBLIC. \n \nThe book will be available for sale ($25); proceeds support the HWC Scholarship Fund. DESCRIPTION:The NHCC Library holds over 13\,700 titles\, with a concentration on the history and culture of the Hispanic/Latino world\, as well over 700 children’s books\, many of which are bilingual. \nThe NHCC Library also houses the Manuel y Lorenzita Lujan Genealogy Center\, containing\, among other items\, the Archives of the Archdiocese of Santa Fe. The library also provides access to Ancestry Library Edition and HeritageQuest. \nThe NHCC Library is open:\nTuesdays – Fridays from 10am-5pm AND\nthe first Saturday of each month from 1pm-5pm. \nCome see what the NHCC Library has to offer!

Il Postino will be presented by Opera Southwest in the Journal Theater at the NHCC on February 2\, 7 and 9\, 2020. \nOn January 21\, join poet Valerie Martinez for an in-depth discussion of the story of Il Postino and how it developed on its journey from the printed page to the big screen to the opera stage. Daniel Catán’s opera was inspired by the novel Ardiente Paciencia (Burning Patience)\, by Antonio Skarmeta\, and the Academy Award-nominated film adaptation\, Il Postino\, directed by Michael Radford.  Register here. \nValerie Martínez is the Director of History and Literary Arts at the National Hispanic Cultural Center. Valerie spent 23 years as a professor of literature at the college and university level\, and was Santa Fe’s second Poet Laureate. Mario soon becomes Neruda’s student\, learning the art of poetry to woo a local barmaid. Inspired by Neruda\, Mario’s poetic voice continues to take wing as he expresses the struggles of his fellow working-class villagers. A firm friendship develops\, and the postman is forever a changed man. The sounds of the Mediterranean come alive in Catán’s stunningly beautiful\, Puccini-esque score – a story of love in its many forms\, set against a backdrop of conflicting political and spiritual ideologies. SUMMARY:El Voto Femenino: Sufragistas Latinas luchando por el derecho al voto
DESCRIPTION:The National Hispanic Cultural Center’s History and Literary Arts Program presents a new exhibit\, “El voto femenino: Sufragistas Latinas luchando por el derecho al voto/The Women’s Vote: Latina Suffragists who Fought for the Right to Vote” which opens on Friday\, January 24\, 2020\, and runs through June 30\, 2020. \nThere will be a free opening reception on Friday\, January 24\, 2020\, from 6-8 pm in the historic History and Literary Arts (HLA) Building on the NHCC campus\, where the exhibit is on display. \nThe exhibit features women from 24 countries in the international Hispanic diaspora who were instrumental in women’s suffrage\, including Nina Otero Warren (New Mexico\, US)\, Bertha Lutz (Brazil)\, Mathilde Hidalgo de Procel (Ecuador)\, Elvia Carrillo Puerto (Mexico)\, Ofelia Domínguez Navarro (Cuba)\, Elena Caffarena (Chile)\, Josefa Llanes Escoda (Philippines) and Jovita Idar (Texas\, US). \n \nOrganized by decade and countries\, the exhibit features photographs\, narrative\, objects (including household items)\, books and documents that illuminate the fight for suffrage by Latinas worldwide. \nThe exhibit also features a companion piece\, “Pan American Unity\,” a mural in woodblock by Albuquerque artist Julianna Kirwin. Kirwin replaced Diego Rivera’s Founding Fathers (in one of the panels of his 1940 “Pan American Unity” mural in San Francisco) with powerful women in the Americas who have shaped its destiny: Berta Cáceres\, Ruth Bader Ginsberg\, Dolores Huerta\, Michelle Bachelet\, Joy Harjo\, Deb Haaland\, Isabel Allende\, Helen Cordero\, Emma Gonzalez and María Martínez. \nThe exhibit is free and open to the public during hours of operation in the HLA building: Tuesday-Friday from 8:30 am – 5:30 pm and the first Saturday of the month from 1-5 pm. \n“El voto femenino” also commemorates the centennial of the U.S. women’s vote which is being celebrated nationwide in 2020. Programming related to both to the exhibit and the centennial will take place in History and Literary Arts through June 30\, 2020.
