SUMMARY:Flamenco Concert: “Lorca in the Keys of Hands and Voice"
DESCRIPTION:6:30 pm to 8:30 pm \nA concert presented by Adam Kent (pianist) and Fernando Barros (flamenco singer)\, is a musical innovation inspired by his example. Lorca collected melodies from the Spanish folklore repertoire and transcribed them for the piano using two different concepts: 1) adapting the old melodies to some of his poem\, and 2) singing the old songs using the expressive\, emotive characteristics inherent to flamenco music. \nAdditionally\, this concert offers a new innovation\, arising from the profound influence Lorca and flamenco music had on the composer\, singer and songwriter\, Leonard Cohen. Our metamorphic reveal consists\, not merely in translating Cohen’s lyrics into Spanish\, but of combining Lorca’s poems that readily adapt to the melodies of Cohen\, like a glove coupled to a hand. \nThis event is part of Semana Cervantina (Cervantine Week) to commemorate the “International Day of the Book” and the “Day of the Spanish Language.”

DESCRIPTION:6 pm to 8 pm  \nAs the capital city of Spain\, Madrid is nowadays considered one of the most interesting “food towns” in the world. This is perhaps due to the wide variety of specialty dishes that its cuisine boasts ranging from the old- fashioned and traditional to the modern\, and even the futuristic; a cuisine that has consistently received high praise from the likes of New York Times’ critic Mark Bittman and TV celebrity chefs such as Anthony Bourdain and Mario Battali. \nAuthor Maria-Paz Moreno\, professor of Spanish in the Department of Romance Languages and Literatures at the University of Cincinnati\, looks at the gastronomical history of Madrid. She traces the historical origins and evolution of Madrid’s cuisine\, exploring major trends\, most innovative chefs\, restaurants and dishes\, and tells the story of this fascinating city from the point of view of a food lover. DESCRIPTION:6 pm to 8 pm  \nÁngel González was a member of the Spanish Royal Academy\, the prestigious\, official watchdog of the Spanish language\, and won awards that included the Prince of Asturias Prize for Letters in 1985\, the Reina Sofía Prize and the García Lorca International Prize\, among others. \nHe accepted a teaching position at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque in the 1970s and stayed there until retiring in 1993\, Please join us for a roundtable in a memorable evening honoring Spanish poet Ángel González featuring personal testimonials of his life and work by friends and colleagues\, a reading of his poems and pictures and poems exhibition. \nAfter the roundtable\, a tribute plaque will be unveiled at the Spanish Resource Center. DESCRIPTION:6:30 pm  \nAward-winning children’s author Margarita Engle will read from and sign her acclaimed young adult biography\, Enchanted Air\, and her latest novel\, The Flying Girl\, in the historic library of the NHCC’s History & Literary Arts Building. The reading is co-sponsored by the NHCC\, the UNM Latin American & Iberian Institute (with support from the U.S. Department of Education Title VI National Resource Center grant) and Bookworks. \nMargarita Engle is the 2017-2019 national Young People’s Poet Laureate\, and a USBBY 2019 Astrid Lindgren Award nominee. She is the Cuban-American author of many verse novels\, including The Surrender Tree\, a Newbery Honor winner\, and The Lightning Dreamer\, a PEN USA Award recipient. Her verse memoir\, Enchanted Air\, received the Pura Belpré Award\, Golden Kite Award\, Walter Dean Myers Honor\, Lee Bennett Hopkins Poetry Award\, and Arnold Adoff Poetry Award\, among others. Drum Dream Girl received the Charlotte Zolotow Award for best picture book text. \nThe School Library Journal calls Enchanted Air “a universally applicable coming-of-age tale\, a fantastic new memoir-in-verse\, or a glimpse into Cuba’s past.” The New York Times writes: “…this is a book that generously gives every reader a ticket to ride as she explores what it means to journey toward adulthood\, traversing from one side of her family to the other\, from the natural world of ‘tropical jungles\, wild green parrots’ that ‘remind me of island skies’ to the back of the car on a family road trip.” \nEngle’s newest books are The Flying Girl\, How Aída de Acosta learned to Soar\, and Jazz Owls\, a Novel of the Zoot Suit Riots. She was born in Los Angeles and developed a deep attachment to hr mother’s Cuban homeland during childhood summers with relatives.  She studied agronomy and botany along with creative writing. SUMMARY:Opening Reception for Because It’s Time: Unraveling Race and Place in NM
DESCRIPTION:Friday May 4\, 2018\, 5:30pm-8:00pm \nJoin us for the opening reception for this exhibit\, which will run from May 4\, 2018 until early in 2019. The reception will be held in the NHCC Art Museum. \nBecause It’s Time: Unraveling Race and Place in NM examines race and identity in New Mexico and is a space for artistic expression that grapples with the complexities of who we are\, how we are understood\, and how that impacts the way we live (or don’t) in a variety of places.  The exhibition features approximately 26 newly created artworks by artists with different experiences in New Mexico alongside works from the National Hispanic Cultural Center Art Museum’s permanent collection. All of the artworks delve into  race and place through an intersectional lens alongside gender\, sexuality\, class\, nationality\, citizenship status\, etc. from local\, national\, and international perspectives. \nThis museum exhibition included much contemplation by the Visual Arts program staff and interns about what it might look like to create an exhibit that relinquished a bit of institutional control and placed it in the hands of the artists. Many of the works were not seen in their completed form until just weeks before the opening. DESCRIPTION:Art Museum hours and prices HERE \nNow\, you can also purchase the catalog for this incredible exhibit. \nBecause It’s Time: Unraveling Race and Place in NM examines race and identity in New Mexico and is a space for artistic expression that grapples with the complexities of who we are\, how we are understood\, and how that impacts the way we live (or don’t) in a variety of places.  The exhibition features approximately 26 newly created artworks by artists with different experiences in New Mexico alongside works from the National Hispanic Cultural Center Art Museum’s permanent collection. All of the artworks delve into  race and place through an intersectional lens alongside gender\, sexuality\, class\, nationality\, citizenship status\, etc. from local\, national\, and international perspectives. \nThis museum exhibition included much contemplation by the Visual Arts program staff and interns about what it might look like to create an exhibit that relinquished a bit of institutional control and placed it in the hands of the artists. Many of the works were not seen in their completed form until just weeks before the opening. The group has shared the stage with world-renowned mariachi groups including Mariachi Vargas\, Mariachi Los Camperos de Nati Cano\, and Grammy-nominated Mariachi Sol de México de José Hernández\, as well as international recording artists Lila Downs and Ozomatli. \nFrom Rociada\, NM\, mariachi soloist Reynaldo Maestas has been performing for 12 years throughout New Mexico and the southwest. This monumental fresco depicts thousands of years of Hispanic history highlighting diverse cultural connections between people and places from the Iberian Peninsula to the Americas. The 4\,000 square foot painting is one of the largest frescos in North America. \nThe digitized imagery of the painting ensures that this culturally significant work can be a sharing and learning experience for students and families anywhere. DESCRIPTION:6 pm to 7 pm Beginning and Intermediate – This class is geared for teenagers and adults. Come learn footwork\, partner skills and choreography. No experience necessary. \n7 pm to 8 pm Intermediate and Advanced – In order to participate in this class\, dancers must know how to keep time\, closed position calls\, dame\, enchufla\, and outside turn. \nDance classes taught by Sarita Streng\, Nick Babic\, Adam “El Caballo” Metcalf\, Larry Heard\, and Rueda 505 Friends. \nIn the meantime\, a fun video from Rueda Con Ritmo Dance Group who was just in Cuba Rueda con Ritmo with Jorge Luna Roque in Holguín.\nClick Here. \nThere is no need to pre-register. SUMMARY:¡Salud y Sabor! Kids Cooking Competition (Tortillas)
DESCRIPTION:5:30 pm to 7:30 pm \nSalud y Sabor\, a partnership between the Agri-cultura Network\, Street Food Institute\, and the NHCC\, is a free evening of food\, art\, and entertainment aimed at providing families with an opportunity to connect around nutrition\, cooking\, healthy lifestyles\, and culture. \nOnce a month\, community members gather for cooking demonstrations using fresh\, locally grown ingredients\, as well as fun art activities for kids and adults\, health screenings\, and live entertainment. An emphasis is placed on exploring traditional Hispanic dishes\, providing basic information/free screenings from local Western and alternative health practitioners\, and creating a vibrant atmosphere with art activities and live music.
