SUMMARY:Book Reading and Signing: Newbery Honor and Young Adult Author Margarita Engle
DESCRIPTION:6:30 pm  \nAward-winning children’s author Margarita Engle will read from and sign her acclaimed young adult biography\, Enchanted Air\, and her latest novel\, The Flying Girl\, in the historic library of the NHCC’s History & Literary Arts Building. The reading is co-sponsored by the NHCC\, the UNM Latin American & Iberian Institute (with support from the U.S. Department of Education Title VI National Resource Center grant) and Bookworks. \nMargarita Engle is the 2017-2019 national Young People’s Poet Laureate\, and a USBBY 2019 Astrid Lindgren Award nominee. She is the Cuban-American author of many verse novels\, including The Surrender Tree\, a Newbery Honor winner\, and The Lightning Dreamer\, a PEN USA Award recipient. Her verse memoir\, Enchanted Air\, received the Pura Belpré Award\, Golden Kite Award\, Walter Dean Myers Honor\, Lee Bennett Hopkins Poetry Award\, and Arnold Adoff Poetry Award\, among others. Drum Dream Girl received the Charlotte Zolotow Award for best picture book text. \nThe School Library Journal calls Enchanted Air “a universally applicable coming-of-age tale\, a fantastic new memoir-in-verse\, or a glimpse into Cuba’s past.” The New York Times writes: “…this is a book that generously gives every reader a ticket to ride as she explores what it means to journey toward adulthood\, traversing from one side of her family to the other\, from the natural world of ‘tropical jungles\, wild green parrots’ that ‘remind me of island skies’ to the back of the car on a family road trip.” \nEngle’s newest books are The Flying Girl\, How Aída de Acosta learned to Soar\, and Jazz Owls\, a Novel of the Zoot Suit Riots. She was born in Los Angeles and developed a deep attachment to hr mother’s Cuban homeland during childhood summers with relatives.  She studied agronomy and botany along with creative writing. SUMMARY:Opening Reception for Because It’s Time: Unraveling Race and Place in NM
DESCRIPTION:Friday May 4\, 2018\, 5:30pm-8:00pm \nJoin us for the opening reception for this exhibit\, which will run from May 4\, 2018 until early in 2019. The reception will be held in the NHCC Art Museum. \nBecause It’s Time: Unraveling Race and Place in NM examines race and identity in New Mexico and is a space for artistic expression that grapples with the complexities of who we are\, how we are understood\, and how that impacts the way we live (or don’t) in a variety of places.  The exhibition features approximately 26 newly created artworks by artists with different experiences in New Mexico alongside works from the National Hispanic Cultural Center Art Museum’s permanent collection. All of the artworks delve into  race and place through an intersectional lens alongside gender\, sexuality\, class\, nationality\, citizenship status\, etc. from local\, national\, and international perspectives. \nThis museum exhibition included much contemplation by the Visual Arts program staff and interns about what it might look like to create an exhibit that relinquished a bit of institutional control and placed it in the hands of the artists. Many of the works were not seen in their completed form until just weeks before the opening. DESCRIPTION:2 pm \nThe NHCC and Haverland Carter Lifestyle Group present Una Celebración de México\, paying tribute to the beautiful song and dance of Mexico with award-winning\, internationally renowned mariachi recording artist Antonio Reyna and a cast of talented musicians and performers. Reyna is joined by Mariachi Femenil Flores Mexicanas\, with special guests Reynaldo Maestas and Baile Ilusión.\n$22 w/ $2 discount for seniors\, children 12 and younger\, and NHCC members \n \nCelebrating 22 years as an entertainer\, Antonio Reyna is a New Mexican treasure who is beloved throughout the Southwest and Mexico\, and whose performances have influenced the trajectory of traditional mariachi music. Born in Gallup\, NM\, he began his career as a mariachi vocalist in 1996\, touring with Nelson Martinez before going solo in 2002. In the course of his career\, he has received numerous awards from the New Mexico Hispano Music Association and the New Mexico Hispano Entertainers Association and has released five albums. His latest album\, Recordando a José Alfredo Jiménez\, continues to generate international recognition. \nEstablished in 2001\, El Paso’s Mariachi Femenil Flores Mexicanas is recognized as the premiere all-female mariachi group in the Southwest\, with a repertoire that includes boleros\, huapangos\, corridos\, sones\, cumbias\, and more. The group has shared the stage with world-renowned mariachi groups including Mariachi Vargas\, Mariachi Los Camperos de Nati Cano\, and Grammy-nominated Mariachi Sol de México de José Hernández\, as well as international recording artists Lila Downs and Ozomatli. \nFrom Rociada\, NM\, mariachi soloist Reynaldo Maestas has been performing for 12 years throughout New Mexico and the southwest. He has recorded two CDs\, and received seven New Mexico Hispano Music Association nominations. In 2012\, he accompanied other New Mexico groups to represent the state and the U.S. at the Summer Olympics in London. Together with Antonio Reyna\, he shares his unique\, passionate interpretations of mariachi repertoire in this joyous celebration of the music and dance of Mexico. \nBaile Ilusión\, from Pojoaque\, NM\, was established in 1999. The all-age group performs traditional Mexican ballet folklórico\, sharing the colorful costumes and intricate footwork of dances from the states of Jalisco\, Veracruz\, Chihuahua\, and Sinaloa.

An emphasis is placed on exploring traditional Hispanic dishes\, providing basic information/free screenings from local Western and alternative health practitioners\, and creating a vibrant atmosphere with art activities and live music. DESCRIPTION:2pm \nPlease join Nancy López\, Director and Co-Founder\, Institute for the Study of “Race” & Social Justice and Associate Professor of Sociology at the University of New Mexico\, as she discusses the insights of intersectionality –the importance of examining race\, gender\, class\, and ethnicity–for interrogating inequalities across a variety of social outcomes\, including education\, health\, employment\, housing\, and developing contextualized solutions that advance social justice. \nNancy López PhD\, Director and Co-founder\, Institute for the Study of “Race” & Social Justice (race.unm.edu)\, Associate Professor of Sociology at the University of New Mexico will present a talk entitled “Intersectionality for Making the Invisible Visible” What is intersectionality? How can intersectionality (the simultaneity of race\, gender\, class\, sexual orientation\, ethnicity\, citizenship and other social locations within institutions\, laws\, practices and lived experiences) be a tool for better serving vulnerable communities? Our point of departure is that it isn’t enough to focus on race\, gender or class\, alone\, if we are interested in addressing the needs of our most vulnerable communities. Using data on race-gender-class gaps in college graduation and educational attainment\, we will explore how an intersectional lens can help advance social equity and justice.

SUMMARY:4th Annual South American Folk Festival
DESCRIPTION:2 pm \nThe 4th Annual South American Folk Festival seeks to unite Albuquerque’s South American community in a day of cultural experience and connection through music\, dance\, and food. In addition to food vendors from participating countries\, the festival will feature traditional dancers from Colombia\, Peru\, Venezuela\, Chile\, Brazil\, Argentina\, and Ecuador. \nHighlights of the event include local band Baracutanga performing a traditional batucada and performances by Argentine Tango instructors Eva Garlez and Pablo Rodriguez\, Peruvian dance/choreographers Fiorella Vera Adrianzen and Yessenia Lentz\, and the Odara Dance Ensemble. The featured band will be Houston-based Bamuayā\, led by Venezuelan percussionist Reinaldo Araujo. A Latin fusion group with musicians from all over Latin America as well as the United States\, Bamuayā will be releasing their latest CD in Albuquerque. \nAnd\, proudly representing the Colombian culture\, this event will again welcome Raices Colombianas who\, for the past four years have delighted us with their traditional dances\, folkloric costumes\, and energetic choreographies. They will be presenting two songs\, both of which have folkloric rhythms with roots in the African cultures that integrated with the native Colombian culture.  These dances reflect the themes of courtship and slavery\, but\, at the same time\, tell the stories of ordinary activities like fishing and agriculture. The costumes have a Spanish influence.  Men’s costumes in general are white and in light materials with hats and scarves. The women use wide skirts called polleras.  In addition\, women wear big floral arrangements in their hair to complete the costume.  Instruments commonly heard in this music include drums\, flutes\, marimbas\, and maracas. \n$14 in advance\, $16 day of show w/ $2 discount for NHCC members; free for children age 12 and younger

DESCRIPTION:11 am  \nThis talk by Maria Varela\, community organizer\, photographer\, writer\, lecturer\, and adjunct professor\, is part of educational programming related to People Powered: New Mexicans and Social Movements. She worked for the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee from 1963-1967\, primarily in Alabama and Mississippi\, supporting civil rights organizers with photographs and educational materials. She has worked with Native and Hispano people in the Southwest to create culturally sustainable economic development ventures and to support their struggles around the poisoning of their land\, water and communities due to uranium mining. Exhibits of her movement photography\, “We’ll Never Turn Back” (1980)\, “This Light of Ours” (2013-14) and “Time to Get Ready\,” are traveling extensively across the US. In 1990 Maria was awarded a MacArthur Fellowship for her work and she was one of 1\,000 women nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2005. \nPeople Powered: New Mexicans and Social Movements is open to the public from April 6-October 19\, 2018\, Wednesdays – Fridays\, 10 am-5 pm\, and the first Saturday of the month\, 1-5 pm.

SUMMARY:Film:  Is It Really So Strange?
DESCRIPTION:7 pm \nBurgeoning since Morrissey moved to LA\, the Latino fan scene is the subject of Is It Really So Strange?\, a documentary film by William E. Jones\, who immersed himself in fan nights\, concerts\, and hair grease to record what he found to be a complex world. Embracing teens and twentysomethings from Mexican\, Central American\, and South American backgrounds\, the Latino fan culture is a world away from Morrissey’s UK following\, though every bit as fanatical. \nThat spirit of joyousness appears as much due to cultural heritage as to these fans being a new generation of Morrissey devotees not raised on his miserablist reputation. Mexican American culture is imbued with a devotion to “oldies” from the stage\, screen\, and stereogram\, with the sounds of 1970s soul\, doo-wop\, and rockabilly long enjoying favor with immigrants to the US. It would seem that Morrissey’s similarity in stage persona to some Mexican pop stars means that he fits right in. His age and status as a Brit in exile also add weight to his popularity.
